Sony confirms 'LittleBigPlanet Karting'

Feb 10th 2012 2:11PM (Joystiq)
I'm confused by all of it... particularly because there still is a very active MNR community out there. I feel like this could cannibalize this in more ways than one. The appeal of a Vita version of MNR is that it shares items, tracks, etc with the PS3 version. This presumably wouldn't have any of that. I guess they just saw an opportunity to rebrand this series and are going with it...

Either way, MNR is, in my opinion, the best challenger Mario Kart ever had. I love the game and its appeal is essentially endless. I wish the load times were shorter, but that's the only genuine complaint I have against it (although control wise it's fairly complex compared to Mario Kart -- there's a boost button that shares energy with a shield button, there's an action button that activates track props, etc. -- some of this is neat, but it turns off people I know who like MK's simplicity).

If LBP Karting captures that and brings even more customization over with it I don't personally care very much what the branding on it is. I'll be buying it.

RIFT in China: 'Biggest game deal ever' for a Western MMO

@Grumms Success is also determined by income and profit. A game can have 10,000,000 players and still make less profit than a game with 500,000 if it's not managed properly.

At the end of the day, Trion seems to be managing this well. Numbers don't just stand on their own.

Usually the meme is used for inception type things, so I'm not even sure it works well here. It's not a baseball game inside a baseball game.

Metareview: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

Feb 8th 2012 3:09PM (Joystiq)
For me reviews don't even matter anymore. I'll look at an aggregate score and see if it's the sub 50 or sub 60 range... If they're above that I try to give more of a fair shake by considering news, previews and videos that explain how the game works and its concepts.

That's enough for me at this point. I don't care that some guy didn't like a story or that some guy didn't like the pacing. Those things are so subjective and the process of assigning a number to it is completely and utterly arbitrary.

At least you see a hell of a lot less weird decimal scores now. Lord knows how a 9.5 is qualitatively different from a 9.6.

Report: 'LittleBigPlanet Cart Racing' to include Move racing wheel

@8bitartist It's a Greatest Hits game, they're still bothering to make DLC for it, the community is fairly active AND they're making a Vita version.

Is it as successful as LBP? I doubt it, but it's hardly a wash. I'm not sure that stuffing LBP characters in a game like MNR would have made that huge of an impact.

I noticed a game on Facebook that really rips off Fez in almost every conceivable way. It's called Sky Island, Adult Swim Games hosts it. I guess it's an OK thing to play in the meantime, been waiting for Fez forever.

Portabliss: Sakura Samurai: Art of the Sword (3DS eShop)

Feb 3rd 2012 12:01PM (Joystiq)
Thanks for posting this. The reviews on the eShop are generally fairly useless. It seems like everything gets 4 to 5 stars on there unless it's especially awful and I can't judge what's worthwhile and what's not.

It's amazing the bonus these people get when most normal workers have had them dropped entirely.

Enter at your own Rift: Want to play RIFT for free? Now you can!

Feb 1st 2012 3:47PM (Massively)
This sounds like what I expected WOW's "free to 20" system to be -- that ANYONE could take a Rift account and play their low level characters for free.

I quickly found out that this was not possible in WOW. Once you made any sort of purchase, ever, you were no longer part of the "low level freebie" group. I think that makes sense from a business perspective, but I do not think they ever explained that well.

Maybe that's not the case. I have an old RIFT subscription. I'm curious to know if I can make low level characters on it and get them going or if I'm just out of luck.

Iwata throws around the idea of paid Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart DLC

Jan 31st 2012 4:08PM (Joystiq)
Barring Nintendo's belief that they do everything "differently", I'm open to this. Particularly for Mario Kart.

Nintendo generally releases only one MK game per platform. We're still playing the original Wii release. It's a great game, but I would have gladly paid money to buy more tracks for it. There's little reason for them to release a whole new game when it can just be expanded upon.
