SWTOR writer talks economy, endgame, and polish

Jul 13th 2011 1:32PM (Massively)
@BigAndShiny In software development, "gooey" is a common pronunciation for the term GUI. At least, that's how all my professors referred to it when I was still in university and that's how my co-workers refer to it at work.

Breakfast Topic: Are there atheists in Azeroth?

Aug 30th 2010 10:08AM (WoW)
I don't think there are atheists in WoW to any significant amount, but I would suspect that there are a large number of characters who may behave like atheists but are not active deniers of gods.

In real life, generally if someone believes in a God(s), they also worship them. Azeroth decouples this, since there could be, for example, a well-traveled but surly dwarf who has experienced all sorts of evidence first-hand of the Old Gods, troll voodoo idols and all forms of Light-related magic etc., but simply can't be arsed to care for any of the deities behind them. Clearly he isn't an atheist nor an agnostic since he has clearly seen and perhaps fought these powers, but he doesn't feel the desire to align himself with them either. The closest analogue to a real-world viewpoint would be a lapsed Christian or a similarly apathetic believer.

Pepsi Throwback Unveiled

Jan 4th 2010 6:17PM (Slashfood)
Given that Canada does get soda made with sugar and the close proximity between the Canadian plants to the American border, I wonder if they simply redirected shipments bound for the Canadian market and gave them a re-badging. Seems like it'd be cheaper than temporarily re-purposing their American plants.

Stop stealing our delicious delicious soda! :O

Mass Effect 2 vids profile Tali and Adept class

From what I remember of the first game, their names reflect either the ship they were born on (if they are still children) or the name of the ship they serve aboard as adults (if they have successfully passed their Pilgrimage). So I guess if her last name has changed from nar Rayya ("child of the vessel Rayya"), to vas Normandy ("crewmember of the Normandy"), she's successfully passed her pilgrimage.

Ion propulsion engine could take you to Mars in 39 days

Oct 20th 2009 10:41AM (Engadget)
It should be pointed out that the 39 day number in the headline refers to a one-way trip; it would take ~80 days at least to get to Mars and then to get back.

Razer announces the Naga MMO mouse

Isn't it supposed to be spelled "Razer" like the blade, not "razr" like the phone?

LAN support not included in StarCraft II

Jun 29th 2009 4:46PM (Joystiq)
@mouldtooth

A significant number of people in Korea play Starcraft in PC bangs (internet cafes), playing against other people in the same room. While so far it sounds like this will still technically be possible, having to sign online and maintain a valid Battle.net account in good standing in order to play with someone 2 feet away from you won't help unseat Brood War in Korea.

In addition, this may completely remove the ability to play anonymously, forcing you to use an identity which may be freely looked up whenever you play, even if it's in a PC bang. Some people might think that this is a good thing (ie. discourages griefing), but I'm sure someone can provide plenty of legitimate reasons to preserve anonymous multiplayer (perhaps you're working on strategies for an upcoming tournament that you want to practice on privately).

The Daily Grind: Direct download or retail box?

May 24th 2009 10:07AM (Massively)
I always prefer the Steam/Impulse/ version. There are no gaming or electronics stores easily reachable by public transit where I live, which means any game that I choose to buy the physical version of necessitates a dedicated and out of the way car trip. Oddly, I happen to live very close to a major national (Canadian) network hub, so high-speed internet access is very prevalent and very fast. This generally means that I can literally get a game faster by buying it over Steam than I can if I were to drive to the store and back and install via disc.

Even if I was close to a game store, and if my internet connection wasn't fast, I would still choose the digital version. While most game companies are starting to release games that no longer require the disc to play, some still do. And I prefer the fact that I don't have to research whether a given game does or doesn't require the disc. I also tend to futz with my system more than the average user, which means I tend to wipe my system more often than most. I like the fact that restoring my games can almost be entirely reduced to 2 steps: Install Steam, install Impulse, done. From that point on, I can simultaneously download and reinstall the few games that I intend to play immediately while I finish restoring other crucial apps.

Plus, I'm a stats/achievement whore. If the game is natively available from Steam, I have more ammunition in the e-penis war between my friends and I.

Massively webcomic: Grinders - Spies in the Spyhouse

May 22nd 2009 2:34PM (Massively)
Errr, it seems the author of this webcomic hasn't read the patch notes. You no longer unlock the new weapons by playing as the respective classes necessarily; all new unlockables are now random drops, and can be received while playing outside the given class. I got the Razorback while playing Pyro last night, and an Engineer mining hat when playing Medic.
