Is the platform genre dying?

Aug 7th 2006 5:22PM (Joystiq)
I dunno if I'm wrong, but I feel we're comparing apple to oranges... I mean Platform is the "Evolution" of Sidescrollers, but the way they are approached ar totally different. The basis of Sidescrollers, called "Platformers" in the old days, was to reach from the beggining of the level to the end (Usually from left to right) and hence the name. Sidescrollers was a name tagged on the old "Platformers" so there would be a difference from roaming, jumping and running from left/right (or right/left) and roaming, jumping and running in a real 3d space where ever you wanted to go. But as related as they are, that's as far as they go. Sidescrollers goals was usually to go from one end to the other passing through the difficulties of the level, so this way you would be able to pass to the next level. Platformers, the ones we call platformers now, has a long term goals and a vaster world. And most of them, you can go back and revisit missed parts on a level or something. Now TO ME Platformers is an extended expression of the sidescrollers, where you can actually see and interact with the enviorment. Sidescrollers are more action based and minimalistic in level design compared to "platformers". Sidescrollers are still alive in portables, we can see it on the GBA and DS, where even though it's considered a dead genre on consoles it's very much alive here. (See: New Super MArio Brothers [DUH!], Sonic Rush, Drill Dozer, Klonoa Series, Megaman Zero series [and up coming Megaman ZX], re-released Mario games... even the re-release of the first Sonic [hope they decide to bring 2 and 3... and a special GBA cartridge that would use the lock-on tech for Sonic and Knuckles] in other words... plenty of games) Platformers are the "counterpart" of the sidescrollers on consoles (counterpart because usually a platformer or 3d game that comes out in consoles, is remade as a sidescroller with the platformer mechanics... and sidescrollers came first! =0P) are not doing as well because of the REHASHED formula... We saw this during the 8bit and 16bit days, and since it's the established mechanisms in the current gen consoles, it will carry on here. It may go the way of sidescrollers if it goes on like this.. but I'm not psychic to know this. There plenty of gems for these sort of games.. but I'm to tired to think right know and I have to get back to work! (Though Mario 64 is the foundation on this genre like Super Mario Bros is to sidescrollers.. in basic controls and mechanics) Who knows, maybe to make the games MORE inmersive and when actual virtual reality is posible, first person platforming (which already exist with controllers) will replace current platformers and pass to be what sidescrollers are today or maybe even downsized to the current status to sidescrollers... but then again it will never be that same, since the quirkiness for Sidescrollers and Platformers are the silly characters and their animations, something that will be lost in translation to firstperson platformers. That was a lot... to lazy to recheck sorry for the long post! If there are discrepancies I hope you understand! Now back to work!!!... sigh.. =0S

Why are there no famous video game critics?

Jul 3rd 2006 7:23PM (Joystiq)
I think critics are famous, because people relate to them and they know who they are dealing with. The only site that comes with an approach like that is IGN. Take Cassamasina for example, he has a large following... of Nintendo Fans... But they trust what he says, because he has shown the public that he also is a Nintendo Fan so People relate to him! And he is even one of the most outspoken reviewers out there. I mean, he even appears on Wikipedia! I'm not a Matt fan, but I do take in consideration his points of view when he reviews or anything, same goes for some movie critics like Quint from Ain't it Cool.
What I think is, going for crazy nicknames is not cool (I'm looking at you GamePro) or reviewing games Anonimously is no the right way to do things if you want to be taken serious as a reviewer. Reviews should have the names of the reviewers at the beggining like IGN, or at least at the end like EGM to see who was reviewing the game. So people will recognize the name and follow the reviews that guy does!... Or maybe I'm just wrong and wasted your time! =0S

Red Steel developer's blog goes live

Jun 30th 2006 9:24AM (Joystiq)
Actually, the way that they are doing the sword fights, is the best way they can do it... In a programming and gameplay sort of way... I mean for the programmers, it's easier to program predetermined moves on the character, and you kind of like executing them in the game, so the game recognizes the input and makes the AI react to the situation. Because it'll be dificult to program for such an open range of movements if you let be free handed. That's were the gameplay comes in. If this freehand style combat can never be perfect because of this, we might as well end up poking the sword forward everytime or slashing all around like a nut and any sort of crazyness will come out of it. In other words, i'll end up being like a button masher wih no depth.. only that you are not smashing buttons... You just need to wave your hands around like crazy!

Grading current-generation game platforms

Jun 22nd 2006 12:59AM (Joystiq)
The Dreamcast cannot get a grade cuz it died!!! Now don't go bashing me, because I love the Dreamcast. But if we are stereotyping consoles to classmates, to me Dreamcast is the classmate that got injured or died in an accident. Makes sense no? =0S

Nerd in a tux? Try Game Boy cufflinks

Jun 1st 2006 9:46PM (Joystiq)
Those look neat! Where could you get a pair? This what makes people unique! People shoud not be afraid of expressing themselves! So what if that makes you a Nerd or a Geek, at least it's diferent and not a stereotype. And it's not something that jumps out of the Tux in first sight! Now that would be ridiculous. Just imagine arriving to your prom with the NES Control buckle on... But then again even that sounds cool!... or not!

Nintendo verifies GameCube housing at E3 [update 1]

May 19th 2006 7:26PM (Joystiq)
People shouldn't be stranged by these pictures. isn't the Wii a pimped up Gamecube? I don't mind if it is, as long as the games are fun. If the graphics get better, then it's good. If they stay the same, it's also good. We all saw how SMG looked, so don't worry. At least give the Gamecube some credit, it said it's farewell in an unusual way! At least it wasn't the Xmac 360 or a PDev3 and it was running in a console that it's considrerd by many as dead.

Heavy Rain in the "Uncanny Valley" [update 1]

May 18th 2006 10:31AM (Joystiq)
I don't know about you guys. Seeing this gave me the chills. But it got worse when I imagined games like GTF for example. Imagine this kind of reality perfected, and people still going on killing others just for fun. Imagine that they go all the way through to perfect character animations were the people shout for help or beg for morcy to the way were it's chilling. Would you be able to really pull the trigger in the game? It still is game, but it looks so real. Would you be able to do it? I know I wouldn't. I think there's a line we must no cross in gaming that is making thinks as real as possible. The "Uncanny Valley" sounds interesting. Reminds of what happened in "The Animatrix" where they were beating up a woman, but it turns out to be a robot. But the way it begged, made you feel un comfy.

E3 Vox Populi: Will lack of rumble hurt the PS3? [update 1]

May 13th 2006 12:18PM (Joystiq)
Taking rumble out is like taking the shoulder button or taking the analog away. These have all become a standard in the industry and so has the rumble feature. You can't go saying that rumble was last gen, when it's been around for 2 generations of consoles. It may be gimmicky because you can play with out it; but at the same time it's necesary, because it adds immersiveness to the gameplay.
