Onkyo has three new THX certified AV Receivers

Jun 6th 2010 7:33AM (Engadget HD)
I wonder why all the new 80x and 90x models are no longer THX Ultra2 certified like the old 805/905?

Wii2HDMI does what its name indicates -- no more, no less

Jun 2nd 2010 8:19AM (Engadget HD)
There are 2 scenarios i can think of where one would want something like this:

1) Most obvious reason is less clutter (vs component cables)
2) Setups that run a very long video cable that may be prone to interference and signal degration. This where a digital connection would come in handy.

One feature they could have added would be an upscaler function that will upscale the 480p to either 720p or 1080p, which COULD improve quality on an HDTV if the HDTV does not already have a good quality scaler chip on it. Though I think if they did add an upscaler chip to the Wii2HDMI, that the price of the unit would almost double.

Summer HDTV suggestions

Jun 2nd 2010 7:58AM (Engadget HD)
@engadgetcomexcludeengadget Love Dexter, but season won't start till Fall/Winter unfortunately. True Blood starts up again at around the time summer hits though, so thats a good one.

Ask Engadget HD: How do I take my home theater to the next level?

May 8th 2010 9:17AM (Engadget HD)
Bass traps to smooth out the low frequences. Bass traps will tame those standing wave resonances for a flatter bass response.

If you're listening to same bass heavy music and ever wonder why certain low frequences sound a little louder than other low frequencies in your room, then you probably need a bass trap.

NewSight's 70-inch 3DTV keeps the glasses away with its parallax barrier tech

Apr 19th 2010 7:32PM (Engadget)
So how is this "Parallax Barrier" any different than simple Lenticular stereoscopic 3D prints that were so common on pogs, baseball cards, comic books, and Cracker Jack prizes?

From what little I can tell about the technology, it looks like the same thing, except with a video playing in the back instead of a print.

Netflix shipping out PS3 instant streaming discs!

Nov 6th 2009 2:07PM (Engadget HD)
Sharing a netflix account for streaming isn't against any netflix policies. They don't tell you that you can only use it within the household. You can use it anywhere (within the 50 states) on any netflix ready device. Why wouldn't you want to share it with friends/family if you have multiple stream slots available?

Netflix shipping out PS3 instant streaming discs!

Nov 6th 2009 10:35AM (Engadget HD)
Okay, there is a LOT of false information in these comments. Here's what I know as a first hand Netflix user:

Ive streaming it at home, at work, and gave it out to a couple friends as well. I have a 1 disc plan, which allows for 5 devices to be registered, but only 2 can be streaming at a time. The higher the disc plan, the more you can stream at a time.

There is no risk involved in allowing friends to use streaming as long as you trust them. The only thing you need to worry about is allowing too many friends to use it at once which can become an inconvenience. If all the stream slots are filled, you will simply get a message saying that you can't watch it. It won't kick the other watcher off or anything.

If you have too many devices registered, it will tell you that you need to deactivate one of the devices before you can activate the current device. Sometimes your friends may register multiple devices and may deactivate one of yours in the process which can be annoying. You just gotta trust who you let use it. Basically you just need to keep tabs on 1) how many people are using it and 2) how many devices in total are going to be used.

Another thing is be sure to ask your buddy not to rate any movies because that screws up your custom ratings and recommendations. and of course (if using on it on a computer) you gotta tell them not to mess with your account settings (such as the page that changes your disc plans)

Dreams become nightmares in this Dreamkiller teaser

Aug 19th 2009 8:52AM (Joystiq)
At first i thought it was a darker sequel to the Longest Journey and Dreamfall games because both games had a female heroine entering fantastical worlds through dreams and the name Alice Drake automatically made me thought of April Ryan. So when I saw that it was an FPS, i was immediately disappointed it was not another Longest Journey sequel...

Onkyo TX-NR807 and TX-SR707 receivers keep the updates rolling

Aug 11th 2009 1:04PM (Engadget HD)
Well, from reviews ive read, the 805 was tested with 5 channels (not 7 like the UPA7), and the unit weighs 51 lbs.

The 807, on the other hand, weighs 38 lbs. I haven't seen any testing on it since it is still new.

Onkyo TX-NR807 and TX-SR707 receivers keep the updates rolling

Aug 11th 2009 10:42AM (Engadget HD)
I wonder why Onkyo weakened the 807 which is supposed to be a successor to the 805/806? On paper, the power specs look the same. Did they think the 805 was too much of a good deal or something? I got the 805 because it was the best bang for the buck at the 800-900 price range (a year ago).

And yeah, i wished my 805 had more HDMI inputs as well. After hooking up the xbox360, ps3, and my computer, I'm all out of ports. If I ever get a standalone bluray player or HD sat receiver, i would have to use the component connections.
