PlayStation Home population at 12 million

Mar 15th 2010 4:34PM (Joystiq)
Home would be a million times better if Sony forced games developers to add game launching to their multiplayer games like they do with trophies.

I want coherency.

I go to home anytime there is an update but I don't find it useful for my needs.
Nobody on my friends list is on it and I cant think of a reason to tell them to go on it.
Most don't have time for marketing's mini games, we buy the real thing.
I also see no point in buying things for my avatar if I cant be guaranteed that every multiplayer game I get from a certain point on will allow me to have a multiplayer lobby in my apartment.

I can see how its cool for kids or people with more time or marketers to convince cheep people to buy the real thing, but for me its been a disappointment.
Its been useless, an expensive visual irc client, something separate from the ps3 rather than useful functionality.
Sony don't seem to get why either. Thats not the fault of the home devs though.

And fanboys say things like "you just don't get it" as if its a philosophy.
I do get it, management was replaced by marketing. Thats what you need to get.

It was a feature of the console which was badly defined, Its been redefined by marketing into second life, something which it was never supposed to be.

Moblin 2.1 eyes-on

Sep 22nd 2009 1:35PM (Engadget)
I can see this being more of a direct competitor to android as its not designed to run on only one brand of phone unlike maemo. well the icons and things can be used on different brands unlike maemo. and everything should be open source like the netbook version unlike the bundled proprietary apps on maemo.

Why call it v2.1? Shouldn't it be 2.0. Does this mean that this is the new interface for netbooks too? Confusing.

This looks interesting, wonder whether any maemo developers will switch to moblin seeing as maemo 6 is moving away from gtk and moblin is using it.

Sony shows off PS3 facial recognition tech

Sep 10th 2009 9:05PM (Joystiq)
Yes, there would only be certain keywords which would progress the dialog but you could have the npc's act semi smart by creating a similar conversational system as irc bots.
Its not true ai but the idea of this is to make something more immerse while still being entertaining and relevant. Being able to talk and ask something the way you would ask rather than have a choice of a sentence is a good progression.
Gaming is a form of storytelling except you are dragged into the story, I do not wish to talk to an npc in a game about string theory even if possible.
Having your character lipsync to what you say would also be awesome as there is few things as annoying as bad static facial animations.

Sony shows off PS3 facial recognition tech

One thing I can see this being useful for is having the face of your avatar in a game mimic your own. Think of it this way, instead of choosing from a few things you can say in an rpg have voice recognition instead. Your avatars mouth would react to what you say realistically. I find this to be a much cooler concept and use of the data than super imposing a cows head onto your own. But just goes to show with any new api like this their are a million different things which can be done with it which are not advertised to the public.
