More keyboard shortcuts for Firefox power users

May 5th 2006 11:32AM (Download Squad)
one tweak i highly suggest is if u have a logitech mouse with unused buttoms or a "rocker" style scroll wheel, is to configure them to switch tabs in firefox. For example, i configured my logitech mx1000 to switch tabs by tilting the wheel in the appropriate direction. Sure beats hunting for tabs in the tab bar.

Indeed, almost all keyboard shortcuts can be programmed to a mouse, so if u have a multiple button mouse, configure it. You can also have it switch configs depending on the app focused using a freeware modification like uberoptions.

Dvorak says Microsoft is dead in the water

May 5th 2006 2:45AM (Download Squad)
There was once a time when i thought his comments as insightful. Now i read them mostly for a laugh.

He raises some valid points but imho, completely overestimates their impact. Vista is delayed, but in the end, MS will sell just as many copies, its more or less a forced upgrade unless apple starts selling their Mac osx, the only worthy competitor for non-techies. That remains a pipe dream. Office 2007 i have beta tested, and it's concepts are quite neat, and though they will require some retraining, it will eventually result in higher productivity, thanks to quick theming systems and the ribbon.

Live itself will soon be integrated in vista, and msn search is default in IE7, which means a very large part of the market who dosent tinker with anything will be microsoft's in a flash. X360 shortages have given trouble, but the ps3 will likely suffer the same, and is overall harder to develop for (apparently). And MS can just crush google by leveraging their desktop monopoly. They have already copied adsense, making it much more invasive but much more lucrative.

Microsoft is a behemoth. Small gaffes are not going to affect it. As long as we lack an easy to use, general purpose competitor to MS WIndows (no, not even the friendliest linux comes close)it will retain its control over the pc domain. There is little one can do against it.

-eNCHANT arM- coming to America

May 2nd 2006 9:07PM (Joystiq)
for a japanese rpg, its pretty decent, though inferior to many on the ps2 in all but graphics. The game has not sold well at all though, primarily due to the poor xbox 360 sales and the fact that those in japan who do buy the 360 are mostly not too interested in the rpg genre...atleast not till the sakaguchi games come along. The ps2 however is still getting a spate of top class titles, from the recently released ff12 to the upcoming Silmeria, Persona 3, Xeno 3 etc. For an rpg gamer, it does not make sense to splurge for an x360 just yet.

its a pity, it sounds like an interesting game.

Xbox 360 to get CPU upgrade in 2007

Apr 21st 2006 4:08PM (Joystiq)
its typical. All first gen products often suffer from some or the other bugs, be it the ps2 or the xbox. Early adopters are always used as beta testers.

Only a few games of the x360 are actually truly next gen, and as of now, unless you want to waste money for a buggy first gen console, not relaly worth it. Its probable that the 360 would receive a price cut or a deal with the hd-dvd adapter with its next version, which will probably be released around the ps3 launch, seeing as the ps3 will probably get delayed to 2007.

In a funny twist, here in my country, original xbox and xbox 360 games are produced locally (original ones, that is) while the PS2 ones have to be imported. I can pick up the latest x360 games more than $15 cheaper tnan ps2 ones.....but will state wait till after the ps3 launch.

of course, considering that the ps3 has many game franchises which i love, i will probably end up owning all three systems eventually...unless nintendo flops. I honestly dont care for gimmicky rev games, its great for handhelds but not for a console. And seeing that i either own the originals or the rom for all the legacy games i care about, virtual console is meh........

Microsoft gives Xbox 360 a mulligan in Japan

Apr 3rd 2006 1:26AM (Joystiq)
Sakaguchi is great, and his titles are highly anticipiated, but on the horizon, i see only his two and echant arms, as titles most japanese will be ineterested in. Halo wont sell x360's, now would ghost recon. However, The ps3 will have a ton of rpg's, from SMT sequels, final fantasy, suikoden, shadow hearts, xenosaga, wild arms, y's, star ocean, tales etc etc. 3 games compared to the tons that will come for the ps3? No competetion.

And no, oblivion isnt the kind of rpg japanese want.

Its really no contest. How many people in the US would buy a system with only japanese "dating sims"? It would barely sell. Is it so hard to just look at teh same situation from the opposite viewpoint?

Microsoft gives Xbox 360 a mulligan in Japan

Apr 3rd 2006 12:46AM (Joystiq)
#4, its not that easy. Japan is a major economy and a large market. Also, a lot of game developers are based in japan, which makes it an important market, as these companies would be less likely to bring new games to the x360 if it dosent have much of a market in Japan (its their home turf after all).

The reason for the x360's failure: not a single damn rpg 6 months after its launch (has enchant arms been released already?). Unlike the US, the people there have different tastes, and arent fps crazy (i mean the majority). The only game worth having for the x360 for the japanese is dead or alive. That isnt enough to sell an entire system.

GR:AW demo finally infiltrates XBLM

Mar 31st 2006 11:43AM (Joystiq)
While i agree pspimp's post is offensive and rather immature,c.grant, a little clarity in the article (like the addition of the words "online-only demo") might help. On an initial read, it does seem that demo downloading is restricted to xbox gold members.

Uniden's 5 megapixel crapcam

Mar 31st 2006 11:37AM (Engadget)
looks better, #3? I hope you are joking.

Its quite iritating how megapixel ratings have become buzzwords for performance..just like intel's mythical gigahertz ratings (even in them, atleast there was comparison with other intel processors)

I still use my old 2 mpxl camera, whic i prefer 100x over my sony k750's camera, with the same megapixel rating. And k750 is excellent for a phone cam.

Optics matter. image processing circuitry matters. mexapixels come below many other factors in cameras..

Office 2007 interface preview video

Mar 29th 2006 5:22AM (Download Squad)
Hmm, i find the new interface of the office beta rather refreshing. Though it takes more screen space, i always have on my hans the tools i need to use, and live preview itself is an excellent tool. It does have eye candy, but also enables non-power users to easily and simply create snazzy documents.

The main benefit of this version, imho, is to normal office users, not us techies. Sure, its kind of restrictive to us, but then, to normal users, this adds a LOt of functionality, exposing a lot of options that many people didnt even know about (for exaple, adding captions to images etc).

This release of office concentrates on ease of use. naturally it means some obscure options may be harder to find, but a lot more will be easier.
