American PSN releases for December 23rd

Dec 23rd 2008 10:13PM (Joystiq Playstation)
I just recently picked up the Sega Genesis Collection for the PSP, and I've started playing Phantasy Star 4 for the first time (huge Phantasy Star fan back in the day, but couldn't afford the nearly $100 that game cost when it was new). This is going to keep me busy for awhile, I imagine, but I'm intrigued by Suikoden (never played that one either).

Question: for a guy who digs the old school Phantasy Star games (to include the premiere on the Sega Master System), would Suikoden be up my alley?

Also, it rocks that Disgaea 3 got some DLC. I don't own the game, but only because I'm still working on Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness on the PSP!

Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum! Age of Booty, this way comes!

ESRB listing shows Marvel vs. Capcom 2 for the PS3

Would ya believe I just won this game last week on ebay??? Well, I guess I'll try to put it back up for auction once it arrives (if it arrives).

Official Sony external hard drives a possibility

May 7th 2008 8:45PM (Joystiq Playstation)
I also upgraded my factory-installed 60 GB to the WD 320 GB Scorpio, and I've been loving it. The swap was easy, and the new drive is extremely quiet. I bought it from Newegg.com, and if you read some of the reviews on that site, it looks like some users have noticed loud clicking coming from the Scorpio. On the other hand, lots of folks (including people who bought it for the PS3) have noticed no problems at all. I fall in the latter group.

Possible Sonic Unleashed gameplay video

Mar 23rd 2008 11:34AM (Joystiq Playstation)
Damian and Vahdyx,

I'm with you both. Though I wouldn't want to go back to the 90s (life right now is just too good), I remember how much fun I had with my Sega Master System, Genesis and Dreamcast. I actually really liked Sonic Adventure for the DC, and I was rather surprised when I started reading later that a lot of people didn't care for it. Minus a compilation disc of classic Sonic titles, that the last true Sonic game I ever bought.

The video that this post links to is very compelling (assuming that this is the real deal and not some hoax). I'm sure they cherry-picked the footage from among the finished or semi-finished work they have, but if the game play in this footage is representative of the whole title, this could be great. In my opinion, one of the trickiest things to do in a Sonic game is to let the blue hedgehog live up to his name and his reputation, make Ricky Bobby proud and just go FAST. There need to be enough loops, jumps, etc. to make it seem like more than a just racing title in platformer clothing, and there need to be enough enemies and challenges so that it doesn't feel like you've put the game on autopilot and are just WATCHING him go fast. That's a tricky balance to achieve, and it looks like they're at least on the right track in this video.

Here's to hoping this game coming out for the PS3. Next up: somehow justifying its purchase when I have bills and a family to worry about. Then there's the fact that I already have more games than I can make time to play. Sigh.

Gaming was definitely easier as a teenager.

GDC08: Bionic Commando: Rearmed out in May; better on PS3

Feb 24th 2008 5:31PM (Joystiq Playstation)
Which controller is best? I guess it depends on your own taste/style and what type of game you're playing. Except for FPS games, of course. Then mouse and keyboard is the best thing going.

And, as UT3 demonstrates (or so I've read), the PS3 allows for mouse and keyboard control. For me, that definitely gives the PS3 the edge over the 360 (not saying the 360 is a bad system--it's got plenty of great games too).

But I think the topic is actually Bionic Commando: Rearmed. I loved the NES version, liked the arcade version (only played it once or twice and don't remember much about it), and I'm definitely looking forward to rearmed. The controller on both the 360 and PS3 should adequately support the game, but it's a shame the 360 version will have inferior graphics (unless they get that download size thing sorted out).

PS3 Orange Box: the slideshow version

Nov 22nd 2007 10:02PM (Joystiq Playstation)
Though I'm not terribly surprised, this is still disappointing. I have really fond memories of the original Half Life, and though I can run Half Life: Source on my PC, I think it would be an exercise in futility to try to run The Orange Box on it. Enter the PS3, a system that has the power and versatility to allow the series to continue on a console while playing like it's still on a PC (read: mouse and keyboard control, like they'll be doing for UT3). Out of all the game systems out there, you'd think that Valve would leap at the opportunity to develop for the one that would allow its games to play the same way they always have. But, instead, we get this mess. Very sad.

Fanswag: Win an incredible Uncharted prize pack

Nov 21st 2007 7:18AM (Joystiq Playstation)
It would have to be Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Of course, it was only as great as it was because it hearkended back to the greatness of Raiders (and because it followed the rather strange, yet somewhat charming, Temple of Doom).

Some more Haze gameplay footage -- shaky cam style

Nov 5th 2007 9:15AM (Joystiq Playstation)
@15

I do agree that FPS titles work much better on computers; however, I ONLY feel this was because PC FPS titles allow for mouse and keyboard (M&K) control. With Unreal Tournament 3 hitting the PS3 with M&K control, there's no reason why they couldn't implement this in a game like Haze.

In case anyone is curious, using an M&K in your living room doesn't have to be that unwieldy. I've got a buddy who has all of his consoles and his PC hooked up to his TV in the living room, and it only takes an arm rest or a hardcover textbook or something for the mouse with the keyboard sitting in your lap or on a tray in front of you to make the combo quite user friendly.

Haze seems to have very good multiplayer co-op potential, particularly when playing as the rebels. The idea of going through a level with some of your buddies and not only stealing the enemies' weapons but also over-dosing them into killing each other sounds like a lot of fun. We'll see. Good multiplayer co-op and M&K control might convince me to pick up the game.
