Psaakyrn -

You are definitely correct; from everything I know, the death penalty has contributed to the fight against drug trafficking in Singapore (probably because the folks in the drug trade can actually watch their comrades disappear).

I'm against killing people generally, so as far as killing traffickers, I'm going to have to balk; definitely not my style. I will say, though, that the death penalty works as a deterrent when it far, far outweighs the crime (as in moving drugs), and when one applies it to crimes where perpitrators are not overcome by emotions or psychosis.

Psaakyrn:

a) The crime rate is too high, such that the cost of maintaining life imprisonment is to high for the area to handle."

That does not happen in this country. The percentage of prisoners who actually receive a life sentence is too low to be a strain on the system. The prison system is overcrowded with first-time drug offenders. If anything, the system puts a strain on itself by incarcerating those who should instead be offered treatment for their addiction.

"b) The crime rate is too high, such that it can be reasonably deduced that life improsonment is not high enough a deterrent to dissuade people from commiting them."

This NEVER happens. The death penalty has been around for thousands of years, and it has yet to deter crime. People in Texas, the most kill-happy state in the union, still commit haneous crimes, and the state still invokes the death penalty. Most studies show that the death penalty does not deter crime.

"c) The said person is likely to cause more problems alive than dead, even if said person is inprisoned."

This is objective. I am not qualified to discern whether or not someone will "cause more problems alive than dead," and neither can you. No one can, and that includes state and federal governments. How many "problems" is someone going to cause in prison? They could escape, and kill again, sure, but that rarely happens.

"Additionally, the death penalty is preferred in certain cases:
a) where the criminal is unlikely/unable to return a contribution to society, ever."

So, by that logic, everyone given a life sentence without the possibility of parole should be executed? That's not even realistic.

On topic: Why are the media still confounded when people kill each other over relatively low-value material goods? I mean, when people were slaughtering each other over Air Jordans, it was the same speil. This is what happens in a capitalist society when 98% of the population is separated to the nth degree from the means of production.

Readers were already informed. Yesterday.

Complete with commentary. Which, I have to say, I enjoy (always, and that includes your $0.02). I don't expect you to post press releases without it. But Mr. Snow already commented on this press release. Hence my question.

Now, now Ludwig. Why this article? To point back to Nintendo's early gaffe (which, while dodgy, can be explained by SOME form of logic)? I think, as you said, we already did that dance. Was it to make fun of the questionable iPod mention? The comments section of Blake Snow's post already took care of that? Was it just to showcase your casino allegory? Since when does "Hey guys, everything's OK!" qualify as a worthy post?

Japanese devs react tepidly to post-E3 PS3 [update 1]

OK.

Faze - To disrupt the composure of; disconcert. Middle English fesen, to drive away, frighten, from Old English fsian.

Phase - A distinct stage of development: “The American occupation of Japan fell into three successive phases” (Edwin O. Reischauer).
A temporary manner, attitude, or pattern of behavior: just a passing phase.
An aspect; a part: every phase of the operation.
Astronomy. One of the cyclically recurring apparent forms of the moon or a planet.
Physics.
A particular stage in a periodic process or phenomenon.
The fraction of a complete cycle elapsed as measured from a specified reference point and often expressed as an angle.
Chemistry.
Any of the forms or states, solid, liquid, gas, or plasma, in which matter can exist, depending on temperature and pressure.
A discrete homogeneous part of a material system that is mechanically separable from the rest, as is ice from water.
Biology. A characteristic form, appearance, or stage of development that occurs in a cycle or that distinguishes some individuals of a group: the white color phase of a weasel; the swarming phase of locusts.

tr.v. phased, phas·ing, phas·es
To plan or carry out systematically by phases.
To set or regulate so as to be synchronized.

Phrasal Verbs:
phase in
To introduce, one stage at a time.
phase out
To bring or come to an end, one stage at a time.

Idioms:
in phase
In a correlated or synchronized way.
out of phase
In an unsynchronized or uncorrelated way. Back-formation from New Latin phases, phases of the moon, from Greek phaseis, pl. of phasis, appearance, from phainein, to show.

Any region that uses "unphased" to mean "unfazed" is just wrong. They aren't even of the same derivative.

The tale of the drunken Nintendo rep

Wow.

By my count, Ethan has flunked grammar, history, and, not surprisingly, metaphors.

Probably it's time to put down the video games and hit the books.

The tale of the drunken Nintendo rep

tcc3 - your beloved XBox only sold a handful more units that the Cube, and did so with a fraction of the third party support and advertising. ON TOP OF THAT, the console made a profit.

C. Grant - I wouldn't call the Cube a success based solely on the fact that it was profitable. But as a transition console--a sort of placeholder for the Wii--I think it was. After the N64 debacle, Nintendo needed to reorganize, reprioritize, get back to basics. It had ALREADY lost mindshare and marketshare to Sony. They needed to keep a foothold in the console market, but also look toward the future. I think the Cube, with low R&D costs, allowed Nintendo to refocus.
