The Joystiq Weekend: April 14 - 16, 2007

Nothing was smoothed... The original image was 320x200. It was resized to 160x100 and reduced to 25 colors so that there would be a noticable difference between them.
The pixelated look is the whole point of the painting :)

'The Neverhood' may head to the silver screen

This is pure awesome dipped in amazing! :D

I love The Neverhood! It's one of my favorite games ever! I have even recently replayed it and enjoyed myself immensely.

I would recommend everyone to play this game through at least once in their lifetime.

(I sure hope Terry does the music on this one too - that was one of the highlights of the game)

Zelda music nails the golden ratio

"But the real question is: do we like a game's soundtrack because of the music itself, or because it accompanies a great game?"

The only reason I have soundtracks is because I have been playing their games long enough to be accustomed to the music and therefore like it.
For me, it's the soundtracks to FF7, NFS Underground 1+2, wipEout and wipEout XL.

Israeli military D&D 'Do Ask, Don't Tell'

jc (#44) - I was talking about comment #5. Also, I wasn't offended by any comment. I am, however, irritated that some (not you - I re-read your comment) decide to base their entire position on only that half of the truth they are comfortable with.

Israeli military D&D 'Do Ask, Don't Tell'

I'm from Israel and I'll re-iterate what I already said on slashdot when the story was published there back in March '05 [1]: The article and the army do not mean D&D as in the classic sense of a bunch of people around the table with a few dice, but rather RD&D, where people go around waving plastic swords and have make-believe lives IRL. Those people are just weird ;P
I used to play D&D as a teen and I know a lot of the people who were with me in the army as computer programmers were heavy into D&D either as teens or even as soldiers. I also know quite a few who played Neverwinter Nights and World of Warcraft to excess, but have the same security clearance as me and the only thing about it that bothered them with their work was the lack of sleep :)

You should understand that even if you live in your own little world, the army will kick your ass and get you back in line.

Oh, and another thing. I read the comments here and saw a few people who started Israel-bashing with "you guys are murderers" and the likes. I know it's great to feel superior to someone without knowing what they're going through. Please don't. If you really want to talk about this, go read and learn some more about the entire conflict's history and the current affair from an objective source first. Then I'll be happy to debate you.

Are some topics off-limits for "serious" games?

Dec 5th 2006 1:04PM (Joystiq)
@31: But then again, you're not really killing Germans/Nazis, but working with your keyboard and mouse and making bang bang noises at not-completely real images that are shown to you to get a higher score. Dying doesn't even make you that upset, since you could simply start over. It's a game. It makes you numb to whatever would really have been happening if it wasn't just the hand of your on-screen persona that you were able to see. Trust me - if each bullet grazing you would cause searing pain, then it might have been able to start coming close to reality.
Medal of Honor, for instance, is a game that could have been played in a totally different war around the same era and would have been (almost) the same (see a lot of the games in that genre), except for those who actually care about the storyline (and there are, apparently, too few of them nowadays).

Not everything is fair game.

Are some topics off-limits for "serious" games?

Being that I am a Jewish guy whose entire family was almost completely wiped out in the Holocaust, I have to agree with the spirit of comments 23 and 25.

Games are made for fun. The Holocaust wasn't fun and it's not a fun subject to talk about.
Creating a game about it would only trivialize the subject, rather than infuse it into gamers' minds.

As I'm sure that this is what most of the citizens of my country believe, the company that would make such games would most likely be immediately condemned and banned by Israel.

Some things are better left for other mediums to handle.

Sony is doing some things right

Nov 8th 2006 7:41PM (Joystiq)
It's not as if we already have any of the console networks here in Israel (where the XBox 360 isn't out yet, the XBox was never imported and the PS2's network connection was disabled by the importer), but as far as my experience with importers goes, we'll have to make a conversion from points to US$ to NIS (New Israeli Shekel) every time we want to buy something for the Wii or the XBox 360 (and that's after assuming one of the importers will make a groundbreaking move and actually allow a console to go online (and that's after assuming the Wii will even be imported(!))).
I doubt Sony would ever do this (show amounts in NIS) for us, but yay for you guys abroad. -___-#
