Japanese hardware sales, Mar. 5 - Mar. 11: GDC ruined everything edition

Mar 17th 2007 6:43PM (Joystiq)
People who say the reason the 360 and xbox are failing is because they are american should be banned from commenting because they clearly aren't intelligent enough.

The fact is when Blue dragon was released (a game that appeals to Japanese tastes) the 360 saw a massive spike in sales. However it is ridiculous to expect a single game to be able to drive a consoles sales for a sustained period of time. If the 360 had more games that appealed to the market it would sell better. I expect once more Jrpgs are released sales will again spike.

''Xbox 360 is fighting a losing battle in Japan but is kicking ass everywhere else in not only hardware sales but especially software sales.''
Console sales for feb in N.America.
''DS - 575,750
Wii - 379,250
PS2 - 323,500
360 - 257,500
PSP - 189,500
GBA - 165,000
PS3 - 133,750
NGC - 26,250''

Im sorry what? The 360 is no where near kicking ass everywhere else. It is performing better than the original xbox however it is still a huge distance behind the wii in monthly sales. If you use the console comparison at vgcharts you can that at this point in its life cycle the 360 had sold 1million units less than the wii has.

Best Buy done with PS3 20GB model

Mar 17th 2007 6:33PM (Joystiq)
Ouch, if this is true it will be a MASSIVE hit for sony in the future. The people buying the consoles now are mainly hardcore gamers. A group who are far more inclined to be willing to pay a bit more for extra stuff.

The casual gamer on the other hand is not, they don't care how much storage their system has. As long as it plays games they are happy. This won't have an immediate effect as hardcore gamers can keep the system going for a while however its now going to have a much harder sell to casual gamers.

Im don't really want a ps3 right now because the choice of games is awful however I would consider getting one in the future. If I was going to buy one I would prefer the cheaper version that really doesn't have any outright disadvantages for me (I still have 13gb left on my 360's hard drive and can't see it being anywhere near filled in the consoles lifetime)

Hall of Fame demonstration video for PS3 Home

Mar 8th 2007 4:24PM (Joystiq)
Seems like an overly complicated and time consuming thing for a very simple thing. With achievements you can quickly check somones gamerscore or break it into individual achievements and games through menus. With this you have to actually have to load up the second life bit, then load the hall of fame, then you can only see a few trophies they have chosen so you have to walk to the central hub and select it, then you have to select the game so you can see the trophies. Oh but you can't just look at a list of trophies with each assigned a score, you have to rotate through a 3d trophy case to check each one individually.

Its too complicated. I don't want to do this in 3d I want to do it quickly. This whole home idea is nice but just done so wrong, seems to just be making everything more time consuming.

Japanese hardware sales, Feb. 19 - Feb. 25: never say noir edition

Mar 3rd 2007 10:48AM (Joystiq)
'' I mean, seriously. 25 million in a little over two years... without a price drop no less.''

Erm what? 25million shipped maybe, just over 20million sold. http://www.vgcharts.org/ngwars.php

I wouldn't even try and question those statistics since we know there were around 1.5million PSP's shipped more than sold in November. As evidenced by Sony's huge slashing of units shipped.

Also the DS caters to everyone, I can't be bothered listing all the games that are aimed at hardcore gamers because I will be here all day. 3 perfect examples though, castlevania, children of mana, FF3. Your fears for DQ are ridiculous as well. I bet you were one of the naysayers who said RE4 would suck and isolate many gamers. RE4 COMPLETLY changed and yet it attracted far far more fans than other recent RE games.

Japanese hardware sales, Feb. 19 - Feb. 25: never say noir edition

While an increase of 65k is very good. It is still incredibly bad when the psp has possibly its biggest title this year (or possibly ever) and it still can't outsell the DS in a week when there is no big title released. I mean imagine the gap there will be when the DS has a big title released.

Ok Aex, new franchises on Nintendo systems? Since you added things like Shadow of the colossus I assume I can add in gamecube games. Since you said systems I can include portables.
Wii sports, Nintendogs, Brain training, Baten kaitos, elebits, jump superstars, battalion wars, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, donkey konga, super monkey ball, eternal darkness, Chibi robo, Geist, Killer 7, pikmin, viewtiful joe, feel the magic, super smash bros.
Then theres upcoming things like Orb, Sadness, ASH, Project hammer, No more heroes, Disaster day of crisis.

I can't be bothered thinking of anymore but I tried to only include games that got good reviews, so I could add stuff like Red steel in (2nd best selling title on wii). I think Nintendo are trying a lot harder than before to come up with original IPs. Not only that but they are bringing a lot of franchises that haven't seen games for a while like Metroid Prime, Fire emblem.

Japanese hardware sales, Jan. 22 - Jan. 28: fear the facts edition

Feb 3rd 2007 8:57AM (Joystiq)
''Someone explain to me again why exactly it's BAD for Sony that out of top 5 consoles - 3 are Sony products?''

Because all 3 of them combined are still less than the number 2 console?

Because the Ps3 which is the follow up to the most successful console of all time is only just selling around 3 times as much as the xbox360, which is famous for its failure in Japan. The ps2 outsold the xbox by over 40times the amount in Japan. Going from outselling by 40times to 3times is insane.

Because sony have dropped from being market leader to an extremely distant 2nd place?

I mean seriously if the 360 ends up with an install base the 3rd of the size of the ps3 in Japan. Then that is a major failure for Sony. Although the fact is both the ps3 and 360 sales are so small in comparison to the wii it doesn't really matter.

If you had predicted 2years ago that the Gamecube2 (not sure we even knew it was revolution then) would outsell the ps3 in Japan by over 4times, people would have simply laughed at you. If you had predicted that the ps3 would only be outselling the xbox360 by around 13k a week, people would have also laughed.

Also you can bet developers are noticing that the ps3 isn't even performing well in Japan. People can say how once it gets some exclusives sales will take off, but both MGS and FF are at least over half a year away, and in FF's case I would guess its over a year away. Thats a long time for developers to consider moving exlcusives over to the 360.

PSP hardware shipments plummet, software up slightly

Feb 1st 2007 2:37PM (Joystiq)
I think this proves how bogus sony always claiming shipped numbers is. The fact of that matter is considering how few psps were shipped (10000 in 3 months compared to almost 1 million in just december) That means there must have been about 1.5million psps shipped in America alone that were simply sitting there for months. Of course in September sony could claim they have shipped a huge amount of psps, it just then takes forever to sell them.
Seriously so many people will often claim that shipped numbers are fine because they can't be that far from sold. This proves otherwise. I would guess that Sony probably had a few million more psps shipped than sold just a few months ago.

The worrying thing for Sony should really be whether sales are going to plummet after the christmas shopping period. I would imagine most retailers would be hesitant about buying Psps after it took months to get rid of the last lot.

God of War 2 videos are hack-a-licious

Jan 31st 2007 9:17AM (Joystiq)
So anyone play Spartan Total Warrior? Cause I sure know the GoW2 developers did =D
Seriously its even got the same first boss.

I agree with the above poster as well. Everyone rags on Zelda (which looked better) yet everyone praises GoW. Btw is it me or the part where he is thrown by the giant and crashes through the building into the water. The music there sounds extremely similar to that from the goron mines.

Where are the Wii-chargeable battery packs?

Jan 27th 2007 2:00PM (Joystiq)
Why not just buy rechargable batteries? O.o They work for wii and xbox360 and ANYTHING else that you need AA batteries for. As opposed to buying battery pack which is a complete rip off as it only works for one thing. You can get 4 rechargable batteries and a charger for cheaper as well. Buying a battery pack for a specific thing, you may as well just send the game companies $30 in a envelope.
