The Halo 2 launch at that Gamestop was way bigger. The crowd wrapped from the cubby area in front of the store over to Wright Sttreet down to Jeruslaem Cafe at its peak :P.

Ziff Davis: EGM, 1UP publisher files for bankruptcy protection

Mar 5th 2008 10:23PM (Joystiq)
1up really is a terrible excuse for a website. Hell on any user, it's shoddy content/terrible writing aside. Also EGM is terribly pretentious and hasn't actually produced anything worth reading or caring about since...sometime in the '90s? Oh, I read it around 2000 alright, and I enjoyed it. But I was their target market then, young boys reading a magazine that they THOUGHT was catering to adults (the way the 'zine talked), but was really catering to them... idiotic young boys.

Yup, I'm surprised it took them this long to declare bankruptcy. It would honestly IMO just be better for the industry if they had to die and any interested parties could form something new, possibly forcing them to put effort into something that mattered...to anyone.

Mass Effect DLC to 'Bring Down the Sky' on March 10

Feb 6th 2008 6:08PM (Joystiq)
I don't think Random Guy is wrong at all. $5 for another one of the EXACTLY THE SAME time consuming side missions of Mass Effect that, really, was just 3 different building on 20 different types of terrain and two minutes of shooting each time is extraordinarily ridiculous. This isn't an over-assumption of concrete value, this isn't value at all.

Don't get me wrong, I loved Mass Effect, and strongly disagree with the dissenters about it not being a "game" and complaints about the combat system. I agree the combat system is alien, somewhat clunky, and un-explanatory, but once you've played it awhile it's more fluid than half the shooters out there, and is as much of a "Game" as any rpg's combat system. But the side missions (of which I've played most all of, cause I wants XP'z!) were the game's greatest shortcoming...really, really cool exploring the first couple times. Then, I seriously have to trek over terrain for 20 minutes to get to the same building for the 15th time to shoot guys for two minutes, get a new gun or two I won't use, and then leave?

$5 is, like a fourth to a sixth of a comprehensive expansion pack for, what, a coule identical clones to a hundred of the same thing you've already driven into the ground? Not even anything meaningfully new to the Universe? Lame. On all accounts. And the fact that it will be released and even a decent percentage of people will buy it is criminal. Again, I'm with Random Guy, it's more outrageous than Oblivion's Horse Armor.

Publishers allegedly blackball EGM for negative coverage

Hell I'd blackball 'em for having material that just stinks of shit so badly. I remember back when EGM was cool...for like a minute.

Zero Punctuation affected by Mass Effect's verbiage

I honestly don't understand his complaints about the combat system. Sure, there are some things to be complained about, that the combat system is a little foreign and clunky at first with NO explanation other than a few quick hardly readable blurbs shot out in the middle of a fight you're already losing...but I just told my guys to form up on me and they never got in my way. In fact, idiots who can't tell the difference between enemies (with big red targetting triangles on them) and their allies (whom they dick around with for 25) seem like the sort of people Yahtzee would be making fun OF, not joining ranks WITH.

And for the record, Mass Effect does have a good story :P. A pinch of Star Wars, a dash of Battlestar Galactica themes (you're thinking Geth? Just wait until later), and a bucketful of a living, breathing Universe where humans aren't the bastions of peace and leadership for no apparent reason like in Star Trek, and you've got Mass Effect (which, consequently, is an actually very well explored fictional concept of affecting the Mass of Space-Time with the newly discovered element Zero, which will no doubt be explored further in relation to the developement and evolution of The Reapers in later games :O).
