May 9th 2006 2:25PM (Joystiq)You are missing the obvious point was making (although I'm not sure they succeeded enough to bypass the fact that the games didn't visually look good): graphics are not part of the agenda. Gameplay is king of the hill this time around, almost exclusively.
Yeah, the 3rd parties shown during the game, and the new franchises as well, didn't seem so grand, but Tennis still seemed like a hell of a lot of fun.

Engadget & Joystiq's live coverage of Nintendo's Wii E3 event
May 9th 2006 1:58PM (Joystiq)But why no demonstration of Mario Galaxy, or Metroid, or Smash Bros (isn't that supposed to be a launch game?). This is the first conference I've ever actually view so I'm not sure if this is how they all operate, more quick fix and rough idea type of thing, and then you go and check out the real goods on the floor. But still, what exactly is the online strategy? The game store, where you can buy older games, what is that? Third party support=THQ Spongebob, Crystal Chronicles, when I know Kojima is making something awesome (but that's at the Konami event, right?)? I didn't seem to be enlightened as much as I was expecting.
That said, I was dancing like Mick Jagger during the Zelda demonstration from sheer joy.
PlayStation 3 in its final form [update 1]
May 8th 2006 11:12PM (Joystiq)As for the price. The majority of people all on this forum I can guess are like me: looking for discounts on $5 haircuts. $600 (which is, like the 360 bundles, the one we need, not the sucker kick to the nads that the beginner bundle is) is steep for us. But for a lot of those kids in grade/middle/high school, the price isn't really a matter to them, but rather their parents, who want to please their kid anyway they can, like they did for the PS2, PS1 (which was priced very similar when it launced back when), 360, iPods, Apple computers, etc. On top of that, a lot of the more casual thinking kids playing games won't see too much of a difference between the Wii and PS3 (case in point: none of my little brother's friends did).
Do you remember how much the PS2 was going for on ebay?
Those puppies were flying out at $1000 and up. But this does seem lame to the Bolton extreme, so we'll see.
Does Mission III's weak open create opportunity for GE's Universal Pictures?
May 8th 2006 2:25PM (BloggingStocks)Movie studios, fortunately, are still ahead in the game, along with videogames, in terms of being in a position where they can capitalize on the situation at hand, unlike music which is STILL beating the same tired horse.
Movie studios need to go about marketing completely differently as well as give audiences something they have to go to the theater for. 3D technology is just busting as its leash to be explored and is the perfect avenue for blockbuster films. Had every day Joe theatres been replaced with 3D theatres, MI:3 would have made well over that $60 Mil. estimation. 3D justifies the price, the experience, and a reason to go.

May 8th 2006 11:24AM (Joystiq)Don't throw Microsoft out the mix yet. I absolutely agree with you in the sense that, yeah, I'm mega rainbow ninja psyched about what Nintendo and Sony, in that order, have up their sleeve, a lot more than Microsoft, who unfortunately has to spring up after both of these guys have take up residency in our waking hours and dreams. But Microsoft, as you said, still has its "badboy games" that are going to be used for the very reason of keeping some spotlight on themselves ala Halo, Fable, Ninja Gaiden, whatever else (all prospects of course, I have no idea if any of these are going to be there). And on top of that Microsoft has had a lot of really lame E3's (have all of theirs been lame?), but still, they'll have Too Human, Wind Walker games, Viva La Pinta, and probably something else, right, right?
Ugh, I think in that last paragraph I might have argued myself into agreeing with you. And no, on average nobody likes addons for their systems, as has been shown over, and over, and over again, but this just a blip anyways, not some huge product on their part.
Old-style controllers are for losers? [update 2]
May 8th 2006 11:14AM (Joystiq)That said, VR Trooper goggles are not in the same ballgame as Nintendo's new lovestick. Case in point of the "broadening the demographic" point: my mom, who can't type well on a keyboard, is excited about the Wii, as in she wants to play it. Same goes for when DDR was in Best Buys for in store playing. She wanted to play it, as did the huge crowd all around the kid playing the game, most of which went along and bought the DDR set straight from the shelves.
Seeing somebody having fun doing anything, absolutely anything at all, has a huge effect on the psyche, and no other video game device has the capabilties at doing that than the Wii. All Nintendo has to do is make sure the system is in stores for demoing well before its launch and that very effect will wash over everybody.
Metareview - New Super Mario Bros. (DS)
May 8th 2006 10:50AM (Joystiq)You still use Linux? I'm, like, WAY more video-indie than you are. I only use MS-DOS and 8 inch floppy discs. And I hate all companies, regardless of whether their games and products are good and help regular people out, which they don't, because they all blow. Long live Coleco!
The "new" Mario reminds me of the newest Zelda for GBA and Mario Kart for the DS in the sense of being new games but at the same time having a greatest hits kind of feel to it. And for weird haters out there, you know if they show a new Mario for the Wii you're gonna bust out the camping gear over at your local video game dealer, not to mention in your pants.
