Can rap find a place in music games?

Nov 28th 2007 4:20PM (Joystiq)
i find what some of you on here are saying about rap. you guys just base assumptions off of what's mainstream or what gets the air-time. unfortunately in rap and hiphop like other music genres fall prey to the "what will sell vs. what wont", meaning songs like soljah boy will get more play time than anything common ever creates. the former is much catchier and doesnt require a deep understanding of what is being said, ergo it will sell better than common's song which are much more complex and have a more sutble quality to them. Rap is one of the most difficult type music to perform. unlike rock where music is the main part of the performance, in rap it is not.

in rap word choice is one of the most important part, a rapper must pick words that jump out at their audience and make them want to hear what they are trying to say.

organization is key, a rapper neeeds to have his rap organized in a way that keeps the audience hype from begining to end. if they start off too high and end low the crowd will become angry, because you had them excited only to become bored at the end. if vice versa no one one will stick around if you stick your best lines at the end.

delivery is key, two rappers can say the same line but if one pulls it off with something that stands out(ala snoop dogg) and another just says it cut and dry, you probably wont care to remember the latter.

rap often has a story to tell however greusome and sad it is. listen to tupac's "brenda had a baby". it amazingly captures all the emotion and feeling of being a single mother, the struggles she has to go through to care for he baby by herself. an even more recent example is ludacris's "runaway love" his words vividly paint out a picture of a girl being abused by her stepfather, a girl who finds out that she's now pregnant and the father who said he would be their now says she's trying to pin her baby on him. Even the gansta rap tells about how they hustle anyway they can to survive, since the government has turned its back they got to get theirs for them and their family by any means neccessary.

i love all types of music, i think good music is always good music and bad music is always bad regardless of genre. if the dixie chicks make a song thats catchy and good to listen to, i wont go "oh i'm black and thats country cant listen to that." Thats why i find it insulting that people disregard rap as an artform because of a few "get rich quick" artist that pump out generic lines. you do realize that rock and rap branch out from the same musical tree, so if you hate rap you hate rock too because they share some of the same basic principles and often borrow from one another.

p.s. Fernado rocker if you can say the hookline in T.I.'s What You Know About That is not is not amazing then i dont know what will get you
