Apple removes dozens of clone games from App Store

Feb 6th 2012 12:41PM (Joystiq)
"Apple has removed 59 copycat games from its App Store, including ... Words with Friends contender Numbers with Friends"

Bro, something seems wrong with this somehow. I can't quite put my finger on it. I guess my brain is a little scrabbled this morning. Zynga must be really happy with what it hasbro.

Spike Video Game Awards 2011 video roundup

@ppryan

Executive #1: Sorry you missed the meeting last night.

Executive #2: Yeah, my gout's been kicking up.

Executive #1: I know the feeling. Anyway, the rest of us were talking last night about which young actresses we fantasize about the most, and Ellen Page was the top choice, Not her current 24 year old self, obviously. More like the 17 year old version.

Executive #2: Obviously. Okay, so then we all decided that our new female lead will be a cross between Ellen Page and who?

Executive #1: Well, actually... a cross between Ellen Page and Ellen Page.

Executive #2: Oh, I hope we can afford it.

Executive #1: Oh, we aren't actually going to hire her. Too expensive. She's too disgustingly old now anyway, and kids need someone young to relate to.

Executive #2: That's true. Man, we are such creative geniuses! And so hip! We truly have our finger on the pulse of the kids today!

Both: Qapla!

Shigeru Miyamoto 'retiring from current position' at Nintendo, working on smaller games [update: Nintendo denies]

Dec 7th 2011 10:04PM (Joystiq)
When he was directing games (1981-1998) as a true game developer, he pretty much schooled the industry on how to make a platformer (donkey kong), sidecrolling platformer (super mario), action rpg (zelda), 3d platformer (mario 64), and 3d action adventure (zelda:oot). After each of those games, there was about a 2+ year wait before the other developers integrated the mechanics (usually not as well) into their own games.

If you actually look at the competition for these games at the time of release, it's hilarious how much better his games were than the competition. For example, what was the most popular game of the same 3d adventure genre when Zelda:OoT came out? Tomb Raider. try controlling that game right now and see how you like it.

If he's "retiring" to go back to that, then this is some of the best news I've heard in a while. I hope Kondo takes the cue.

Civilization World launches on Facebook, global productivity threatened

Jul 7th 2011 11:51AM (Joystiq)
Found a review online:

"Civ World will of course will also be fueled in part by microtransactions, in the form of CivBucks. You can earn them by playing or buy them outright. CivBucks have a number of uses; you can purchase new customization objects for your throne room or spend them on specific, temporary GAMEPLAY ADVANTAGES."

No thank you. Even if the advantages are subtle (at the beginning of the business plan), it still is something that inherently breaks multiplayer gameplay in any game:

Player A: Check mate!
Player B: Wait, not yet! I still have a time window to buy another pawn! I'll get my credit card!

Nintendo: 'No plans' to localize Xenoblade, Last Story, or Pandora's Tower

Jun 29th 2011 10:56PM (Joystiq)
Shows how spoiled and bratty Nintendo fans are. Nintendo goes out of their way to release "Mystery Case Files: The Malgrave Incident", which we all have been waiting anxiously for and might possibly be the greatest game of all time, and you still want more! That should last you through the next couple years, people, jeez....

Wii U doesn't play GameCube games

Jun 8th 2011 10:04PM (Joystiq)
Sorry Joystiq, I agree with all these other people. If the Gamecube backwards compatibility is my grandma, then I' visit my grandma A LOT. In fact this last week and a half the game I've been playing more than any other is Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door, on my trusty Wii. And the idea of not having some sort of Wind Waker-playing system hooked up to my TV is almost sacrilegious, so let's not even talk about it.

...ugh, all the cables ... so many cables ...
