Mad Catz launches ThunderHawk Studios, gets into flight sim development

Jun 1st 2011 1:58AM (Joystiq)
You guys all realize that Mad Catz bought Saitek a while back. Saitek is one of the leading producers of flight sim peripherals. Heck, their latest product is the Saitek X65F which is a force sensing stick, almost unheard of in the joystick and throttle PC market.

So go on, continue making fun of Mad Catz's entry into the flight sim market even though they've been involved in it for the PAST FOUR YEARS. -_-

GDC 2011 reaches record attendance, GDC 2012 scheduled

Mar 7th 2011 2:28PM (Joystiq)
@ericelftmann

I'm a game developer but I've attended GDC when I wasn't one.

It's expensive to a get a pass that allows you to attend the lectures and panels. Expect to pay around $1000. I highly recommend getting one only if you're looking to make yourself a better game designer, programmer, sound engineer, artist, etc. Or looking to network with the pros.

How Xbox Live Achievements work

Some sample code from the Gears of War source code.

DICE explains current lack of Onslaught in PC version of Battlefield: Bad Company 2

May 12th 2010 9:51PM (Joystiq)
Although the PC version of BFBC2 uses dedicated servers, they have not publicly released the client. Only hosting companies are allowed to operate the hosting clients which in turn are rented by clans and player groups. It's worked pretty well so far and gives players stable servers. But at the same time, does not give the openness that players had in say, Battlefield 2, where players can operate the servers themselves along with the hosting companies.

Players don't really need any new incentives to set up servers that offer less. If DICE had a public dedicated server client available with this mode, the player base would have this up in no time.

I hope DICE someday releases the dedicated server client in the future and some modding tools. Then it'll reach the pantheon of Shooters That Just Won't Die up along with QuakeWorld, TFC, Counter-Strike, BF1942, and BF2.

You guys got the title wrong. It's "Mai Waifu."

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 VIP Map Pack 3 almost ready for deployment [update]

Apr 22nd 2010 11:32PM (Joystiq)
Much of the features that BC2 "ripped off" from Modern Warfare originated from Battlefield 2 which was released in 2005. FYI, Modern Warfare 1 was released late 2007, almost three years after Battlefield 2.

Modern setting? Had that in Battlefield 2.
Weapon unlocks? Had that in Battlefield 2.
Level rankings? Had that in Battlefield 2.

Other than the insta-knife and insta-grenade buttons, that's pretty much all BC2 and MW2 have in similarity. The games are completely different creatures. One game recreates a warzone and the other game recreates an airsoft match.

Ex-Free Radical (Crytek UK) working solely on Crysis 2 multiplayer

You know what other game did that? Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

Classic multiplayer by Splash Damage with a so-so singleplayer by Raven.

PSA: Activate Bad Company 2's M-COM stations early to avoid picking up kits

Mar 28th 2010 11:31PM (Joystiq)
Why don't they just patch it such that the game polls for a key up or button up instead of key/button down in order to pick up a kit?

Civ V trailer lacks mind-blowing turn-based action sequences

Feb 26th 2010 8:43PM (Joystiq)
I hope these monologues are spoken after researching tech in Civilization V. They seem much like Alpha Centauri's research monologues, longer, more insightful, and more varied, unlike Civilization IV's short and cheeky research monologues.

BioWare: Mass Effect Trilogy will not spell end of franchise
