Lost Planet all bundled up in Japan

Nov 1st 2006 5:11PM (Joystiq)
How can you blame Microsoft for their effort here? For some reason, Japanese gamers seem to have completely rejected everything Microsoft. It really puzzles me, because in my opinion, the original Xbox was the best system of it's generation, and I'm personally extremely satisfied with my 360 and the current wave of games.

Lost Planet looks to be a great title, although needing some minor tweaking. I did enjoy the E3 demo a lot, nice visuals and a cool environment despite the obvious repetition of snow. Hopefully Capcom can deliver here. But what I'm really itching for is them to give out some information regarding the next Resident Evil game. RE4 was jaw dropping.

Watch the Wii get undressed

Nov 1st 2006 5:07PM (Joystiq)
Right on dsub - it's quite odd that foreign publications I haven't heard of are getting stuff before Japanese or American groups. Like how Sweden got that exclusive Halo 3 dealy.

I agree abotu that 360 bikini picture not being very great at all. Girl had a strange face, not sure what it was about her, but made her look kind of odd. Make up didn't help much eiher.

I had a really nice long, in-depth post, but for some reason I didn't get my confirmation email. So here I am typing again.

Goldeneye throwback maps for download, Xbox Goldies only

Nov 1st 2006 4:58PM (Joystiq)
Too bad Perfect Dark Zero was a horrendous letdown. The game played absolutely nothing like the original Goldeneye or Perfect Dark. The acting and plot were completely nonsensical and bore no relevance whatsoever to the original Perfect Dark game. Joanna looks like some bug-eyed teen queen instead of an agent. Not to mention the controls, pacing, hit damages, and balancing were all completely off. It just did not feel like a good game at all. I wanted to love that game, I tried so hard to keep playing it, but I couldn't, it was just a huge letdown.

In the end, Perfect Dark Zero was a very mediocre first person shooter, but not a Perfect Dark game by any means or standards. It just had zero relevance. It goes to show what Bungie did so well with Halo 2 - adding to the series in a way that made it new and fresh again, but stuck to the same core as the original game, giving verterans a sense of familiarity and newbies a chance to join the Halo universe.

You can add new maps as much as you want to this game, but it isn't going to make it any better. The game needs the controls redone, the action moves taken out, a jump button added (many of the MP levels beg for it), new pacing, and new weapon powering. All of which could be done with some time and an autoupdate. Rare briefly mentioned remaking the original Perfect Dark for the 360, hopefully they will use different people for this game and stick to the series' roots.

Serious Games Summit: The cheat's the thing

Oct 31st 2006 8:09PM (Joystiq)
I think I sort of fall under "Code is Law," but not quite. For example, I consider people who L-Cancel in SSBM perfectly legitimate. It adds depth to the game and takes skill to perform. Just like button comboing in Halo 2. Stuff like BXR, BXB, RRX. It's very difficult to accomplish some of this stuff properly, and when you do, it's rewarding. But stuff like glitching under or out of maps and camping inside things I consider cheating.

Oh, and boycott EA after the BS spyware crap in BF2142. Or at least sign th eposition telling them to stop:

Enhanced DVD-capable Wii coming in '07 [update 2]

Oct 30th 2006 2:59PM (Joystiq)
There's no hardware update required to playback a DVD. The Wii's drive is just a standard DVD drive, the only reason it doesn't play DVD movies is because of the licensing fees associated with the DVD movie format. This is why Mircrosoft chose to make the DVD playback optional for the original Xbox - so that consumers would not have to pay a higher price for DVD playback unless they were actually going to use it, and Microsoft paid for the fees for each peripheral sold.

All the Wii would need to do is release a firmware or software update. And, based on the disc included with the Wii (Wii Start-Up Disc), I would assume that it is entirely possible. If anyone manages to get homebrew running on the Wii, it would be as simple as porting a program such as VLC, which decodes DVDs on the software level.

The idea of a hardware changed Wii is absolutely rediculous. The most likely outlet would either be a disc distributed or digital distibuted firmware update for the system. And befor eyou poin tot the Panasonic Q, the only reason for that is because the GameCube couldn't physically fit a DVD disc.

Halo 3 info leaked: new weapons, vehicles, features & Collector's Edition detailed [update 1]

Oct 27th 2006 12:54PM (Joystiq)
Darn it, I submitted this news and didn't get credit.

This is cool, but I want someone to do a translation of the whole articles and do some legit scans so i can see those screenshots. I have no doubt Halo 3 will be absolutely amazing in terms of gameplay.

Sony releases security patch, calls it PSP firmware 2.82

Oct 26th 2006 2:40PM (Joystiq)
I run 1.50 with 2.71 emulated through DevHook. I'll probably try 2.71 SE-C when it's released.

Can't wait for the inevitable 3.00 SE.

Back of the Wii box sparks speculation

Oct 18th 2006 11:10AM (Joystiq)
Apologies for the double post, but does this mean stores have fully ready-to-go retail boxed Wiis in stock already? Or is this just a display box. If they've got those suckers in stock, I think it's time to rob them. Just kidding. But I want the new Zelda, and I want it now.
