Real original there imitating me, I really think its outrageous taht this site does not provide any defense against identity theft like that above.
I am outraged that fake people would dare introduce sony-biased opinions. Once again, my fake gives absolutely no support for what he says. He merely cites the shoddy work of others. Once again, I apologize for my insolence. I shall now go back and proclaim the truth, not the truth as I see it. Back to being fair and balanced.
Yours truly, azn_1080p
BTW The PS3 isn't a better value. It's a good system but I admit that the pricing was a bit off for the mainstream. Maybe once pricing comes down, it'll be a better value. But for now, most of the cost rests with unproven technology (Blu-ray) and features that the consumer either does not need or can be emulated just as well by the 360.
I'd like to offer a sincere apology to everyone whose time that I have wasted with my inane ramblings and logically abominable arguments. I was merely angry at my mother and father who failed to purchase a PS3 for my exlusive usage this morning; they also didn't buy me my glorious 1080p TV that I will use to court darryl and other Sony people in an elaborate and raunchy monkey ritual of sexy time. I shall take my anger out on my failures of parents now instead of you intelligent posters who have been patient with me.
I take back everything that I have said about the PSP. Those were all contrived and fabricated lies; visions from my own Sony shrine that emits hallucinogenic incense that hangs above my bed. I created those lies even though I knew no one would fall for it because I just detest Nintendo for releasing a system that surpasses my own in fun factor and playability. That leads me to my next deficiency as a human...
I'm not ambi-company enabled; I can only purchase things from Sony due to a deep psychological problem.
Of course Sony is a fairly good company and we all agree that we owe them for their many good games. They make good games and bad mistakes like any other company. But childhood trauma or some other equally damaging event(s) prevents me from seeing this and thus I have to convey my points of view onto the general populace.
The origins of my repetitive and unimaginative "Wii FTL" comes from actually fearing that it might turn out to be a system I want. My other self will hurt me if I play it. Thus I've been instructed to put down the Wii routinely and as much as I can even if it appears as poor English. If I fail my other, currently sedated, self, I will be whipped like a dog. This treatment was successful in rooting out my "irrational" desire for the XBOX360. Now I associate Microsoft with the pain that gave me the whelps on my back.
Rest assured though; my doctor is making me play long sessions of Mario, Wind Waker, Ocarina of Time, Halo 1-2, and hopefully Gears of War. This will kill my other Sony-ized self with a little bit of luck.
However, this treatment is dangerous. Every second of pleasure I experience is also unspeakably painful. I need your guys's collective support so I apologize for my idiocy. Please give me a hug!!! Thank you for doing your best to correct my irrationality. I appreciate everything that you have done.
From now on, my unsupported, unwarranted claims and flat out lies shall remain in the bedroom with my girl, darryl and whoever else makes such claims. I will now support what I say and not be consumed by blind hatred anymore. Once again, I offer my sincerest and most heartfelt apologies.
Hi. I'm DocWho's doctor, Dr. Hu. I apologize for unleashing this mental black hole onto the world wide web. After sedating him with elephant tranquilizer, I was able to extract the truth with sodium pentathol. In his natural state, his tormented soul is incapable but here's what he actually wants to say:
"I'd like to offer a sincere apology to everyone whose time that I have wasted with my inane ramblings and logically abominable arguments. Well, there you have it! He isn't a Sony-bot afterall. Underneath that big, overheated, Blu-ray tattooed exterior, he's still a human.
Please join me in supporting this fellow human being for we should all be kind and magnanimous. DocWho, I just want you to know that you're welcome. For my efforts, and everyone else's efforts to help you ascend to the next level. We call it rational humanity. Thank you for being so understanding.
Nothing about it seems to make fun of round-eyed people. Answer the other argumentative aspects of my post. I already answered your point. I have nothing to say until you address the other parts of what I had written.
Barrick
Address my arguments before reiterating yours. I'm not sure what to say to you except that I already answered your points.
I don't really know what you or others mean when you say I should go out and do more and not comment on a blog post. That's an immensely ignorant and ridiculous argument. Firstly, I'm not trying to change anything; I'm expressing my discontent. Second, even if I was trying to change something, I can easily do both. Thirdly, even if I can and should go and do something, that certainly does not make it WRONG for me to voice my discontent; I cannot believe you people have the gall to shift the blame from the offender to the affected.
epobirs You're wrong on that count. The etymology of the word is most closely tied to the usage by Americans to rally Westerners for fervor for the Chinese Exclusion Act and Japanese internment. It is meant a derogatory slur against Asians in general and has been a political tool used to rouse public opinion. Even if it isn't the closest link, it definitely is a strong enough link to get people upset. I know many who aren't offended by this term but everyone who is close to the history of Asia-phobia gets uncomfortable when it is used.
Your point about it being in literature and movies doesn't mean anything and it doesn't take out the link established to the original history of the term. Moreover, the example is invalid; it's there, more often than not, to show the ignorance and hatred of the character to a Asians be it justified or not; at the end of the day, it's still being used to express hate.
I don't understand your point on round-eyes being affectionate. Slant-eyes isn't affectionate. Even if it were, it just proves that certain terms can hold different meanings but there are certain meanings that are stronger (ie history).
@ all
Ultimately, I don't really think there is any way to resolve whether or not this term is racist or if the usage is racist. I suppose it's totally subjective. There are cool-headed and respectable people I know and that I see posting on this board that share opinions completely opposed to mine. This only tells me that the issue is subjective. Bandit put it best with the example of calling one of your guys's mothers a whore. You'd be angry (I'd hope for the sake of your humanity) but with your logic, I'd be reasonable in calling your mom a whore.
What I do know is that it was journalistically irresponsible for Vladimir to post what he posted because he failed to foresee how this term might have been construed and what the aftershocks would have been. That warrants an apology at the very least. Once again, I'd really like to see anyone else at a professional news site do this and get away with it. Give me another example of a major news site using terms with racial undertones jokingly and getting away with it. It can't be done. This is the one point that no one has addressed and the one point that joystiq should address.
And before I sleep and reassume my normal name tomorrow, I'd like to thank you all for this eye opening discussion. I'll definitely tone down my rhetoric the next time I encounter this in life and approach this with a more open mind. I never realized how subjective the issue was.
Once again, as I had said to a previous poster, why can't someone be pissed at both? Those of you that tell us to drop this, and get angry at something else... That doesn't make sense.
Are you calling me a racist because I thought of the term "slant-eyes" when I read VC's usage in the post? Go read it again. The hypothetical situation you create is inapplicable. VC implies the existence of "slant-eyes" by calling us "round-eyes" because that somehow differentiates the US population from the Japanese population. What was I supposed to think?
Could you just explain how I would be racist by keeping the historical significance of the term at the forefront of my thought processes? If anything, those that don't recognize racism for racism are ignorant and irresponsible and do a lot more to propagate racism than those that criticize it.
I'm not familiar with the term round-eyes. Could you give me a link that details the history of it? I'd like to learn more about it.
I don't see why everyone using racial slurs makes it alright. There are reasons why people don't use them. It really is offensive to people. Even at the superficial level where you ignore this inconvenient truth and say that we shouldn't think any more of the term, don't you agree that it isn't professional to use it in a journal meant for the general public to read?
I'm definitely not joking. What's the utility of me joking? I'm just communicating what I felt.
Also, why can't you be civil?
epobirs
I don't see how that addresses the issue at all. Dragons aren't real. Minorities are.
I guess it's a case that depends on the individual and whether or not he feels strongly about his history. Once again, it's tied back to the Chinese Exclusion Act and Japanese internment. I suppose it's easy to forget these things but I don't think people should forget them. I'm not clinging onto my history bitterly but I definitely think racist terms should be recognized a racist terms and addressed to some degree. Tell me why I am wrong.
I see where you are going but I don't necessarily agree. I don't understand why round-eyes is derogatory in that it's just some stupid term with no history of racial tension. "Slant-eyes", however, links back to Japanese internment camps and the Chinese Exclusion Act and Yellow Fever.
The reason I saw "slant-eyes" in his usage of round eyes is that he sets up an self/other dichotomy. If we are round-eyes who are the people who aren't round-eyes? The Japanese in this post. I don't care that it was used jokingly or wasn't meant to make fun of Asians; the fact is that he "jokingly" brings uses language that draws a difference between Westerners and Easterners based on the geometric differences of the eye. That's how "slant-eye" originated; it gave the haters a convenient way of labelling their "enemies". When you read the post, do you not think of "slant-eyes"?
The history of the term's usage strikes a deep nerve in myself and my culture.
Even if you don't feel offense on the personal level, do you not any journalistic irresponsibility in that post? Because I think we all can agree that his wording was lacking foresight and responsibility.
For that reason, I think that some action needs to be taken.
Seems reasonable enough to me. I'll just wait for an apology. But I do wish to defend the statement's inherent racism. It's well established to you and I and many others that it is a racist term and that it is irresponsible. But I simply can't handle those that feel that this isn't racist and that we should simply get over it.
This isn't an issue with physiological difference. Rather, it's a problem with the language and its historical context. Read up on it. People don't inject racism into terms. They are racist in themselves by virtue of the hurtful ways that they have been used.
Sure I can make the world a better place by doing what you suggest but they aren't mutually exclusive. Why not do both? I think serious racial slurs need to be cracked down upon.
As to the Canada insults. I don't find them funny but they are nowhere near as insulting because they have no historical context. Canada has a great military and contributed heavily to WWI and WWII. On the other hand, "slant-eyes" was a term used to arouse nationalism. I don't think Japanese-American relocation camps or the Chinese Exclusion Act are funny. Also, I don't think it is appropriate that we simply laugh these terms off. We should remember for the sake of respect and to avoid future tragedies.
Your counterexample simply isn't compatible since that is nowhere near as hurtful as what "slant-eyes" means to myself, my friends, my countries, and my family.
To CBlake.
Your response to the supposedly humorous and joking posts was pretty riled up. How come you can tell them to shut up over some stupid lies but we shouldn't jump on VC for his insensitive and offhanded use of such a historically charged term? See what I mean?
