Dhani Harrison: Rock Band 3 will make you better at actual rocking

Nov 7th 2009 3:18PM (Joystiq)
@Wired knight:
I think seeing that many buttons will drive away much of the game's target audience. Production costs, and consequently end-user prices, would probably be pretty high as a result I imagine. I think a balance b/w accessability and realism has to be struck to appeal to the casual consumer base.

@PN04:
I'm not going to get sucked into a flame war, though I certainly dont enjoy having death wished upon me. A few things though; I, and I'm sure I speak for many 'elitists', have fun while playing guitar - I do it when I'm not working and do not consider it 'work.' Your analogy is akin to saying that reading the book of a book-turned-film would be 'work.'

Scroll down a few comments to see my thoughts on the 'learn a real instrument' subject - I forgot to hit reply.

Yes, still, buttons = no feel.

Can't vibrato or bend buttons - unless you're an Eigenharp:

note to self: sell kidney to buy eigenharp.

The instruments will probably be backwards compatible but the old tracks wont be taking advantage of the new buttons unless the the fret layouts are rewritten... I smell DLC-money to be made.

and just my two cents on the 'learn to play a real instrument' comments: For casual players of these games it's totally inappropriate. For the kids that spend hours and hours mastering some of these tracks - pick up a guitar, you'd be surprised how much you can accomplish in the same time. And no, i'm not saying go out and compose a symphony, just try to play the songs you like; most 'musicians' are terrible composers and only ever get around to do doing covers.

It'll probably be the same 5 vertically placed buttons just multiplied (x4 seems reasonable) horizontally to mimic moving across strings.

And no, we'll still say "why don't you learn how to play a real instrument" regardless of how 'realistic' it gets.

PlayStation 3 in its final form [update 1]

Well what did you think they were going to do? Before all you sit there and bash the damn thing think about it.

A unified online service was inevitable. Nintendo's going to do it as well, but i'm sure no one's going to bash that. It HAD to be done otherwise they'd lose alot of their customers. They've added some bells and whistles and expect microsoft to follow suite with video calls and custom spaces.

The controller rip was a little tacky i'll admit. But then go ahead blame nintendo for copying microsoft's long forgotten tilt based controller. Its a nice little addon to go with the whole deal and it probably wont be too much of a feature to start with.

The games were impressive. Heavenly sword, Resistance fall of man, metal gear solid, final fantasy XIII. As far as how many people will goto dismiss the trailers of eight hours, getaway and lair in particular lets not forget GDC and the leaked videos. The destructive car test video was obviously from eight hours, lair's GDC trailers were ingame and it was clearly stated at GDC london test at e32k5 and GDC was realtime. sure they wont look as pretty as the trailers but they'll look damn pretty nonetheless. Its still the first gen of games.

price. $500 for the base. i dont see too much of a reason for getting a 60gig HD especially when, and you know this is bound to happen, you'll be able to use a standard usb harddrive or wirelessly use your pc's HD to store data. So you get wifi, a slew of a exclusive games, blu-ray (go find me a blueray player considerably cheaper than that price right now and you can have a cookie), free online etc etc. What was the ps2 like when it first came out? $400? its been nearly 7 years. things get expensive. get over it.
