Anatomy of shame: Dual Shake vs. Wiimote

May 9th 2006 8:59AM (Joystiq)
@Sean Dungan
"while it's fun (and easy) to rag Sony for these faults, the PS3 has the most to offer hardcore game players."

Sony has basically said "F*** You!" to all casual gamers. "F*** off, we dont need you!"

Nintendo is saying "Hey, lets get those casual gamers playing! Let's get non-gamers playing!"

Sure... Sony has a fair bit to offer hardcore gamers. Nitendo has alot, IMO, to offer casual gamers... so Sony just handed Nintendo a big market share on a silver platter. What's worse for Sony? Nintendo, with its TRULY innovative design (Sony calls gyroscopic 2-handed Playstation-1-shelled controller innovative. um... no!), it could actually be offering something interesting to hardcore gamers. I can't say for sure, but I'm intrigued.

Anatomy of shame: Dual Shake vs. Wiimote

Ok, i wasn't going to comment... but I just watched the Sony Press Conference. Did any of you see it? I've heard some of you say something along the lines of "you never know, the PS3 controller might be responsive".

When the Wiimote was announced, people tested it... gamers tested it. They said it had INCREDIBLE response. People are testing this new PS3 controller, and they claim its response is lacking. COuld it improve? Maybe, hwo knows. But it's not a good primary showing.

But here's the problem... I dont want to sound like a Ninty fanboy (I kinda am), because honestly I give the other consoles a fair chance to impress me. If you watched as the demo person contorted his arms in EXTREMELY uncomfortable positions to fly that aircraft... I'm not impressed. I wasn't sure before, but now I know... the one-hand Ninty design is a must for proper motion control.

Joystiq hands-on: new PS3 controller

In response to Joe Smith, how exactly is a joystick (analog stick) precise? Precision, IMO, comes alot more from mouse systems as players learn to use them than from an analog stick.

Not only does movement allow more precision, but it allows more control variables. You move from the simple analog stick to movement in six planes... meaning a higher level of control.

Unfortuantely for Sony... Nintendo beat them to it, and everyone views Sony as an idea-thief at this point. The incomplete control functionality of Sony's controller just further "proves" this. If Nintendo's controller is easier to use (which people say it is, since it's already been tested by gamers when it was announced), Nintendo is going to take Sony to the bank on this one.

Sony steals motion idea, but not from Nintendo

More 'proof' that Revolution ISN'T USING GYROSCOPIC TECHNOLOGY (ignore mentioning that they might in my first post).

Although inconclusive, just like Sony said... rumble and gyroscope dont mix. One interferes with the other. But Nintendo has this controller that rumbles and senses... why? IMO, because it's not sensing the tilts in the controler as much as where the controller is pointed... which a rumble wouldnt interfere with as much.

Keep in mind, I'm pretty sure Ninty isn't actually called gyroscopic.

I believe they used some sort of sensors placed around the screen to track the movement relative to the sensors, and then took the scale based on the distance between sensors so it could be adjusted for the game. Or so is my guess, based on what I've seen and heard.

Of course, Ninty does use Gyroscope as well I think... they know if your controller is tilted or not I'm pretty sure.

In any case, it's obviously not a new idea anyways. I (right now) have something called a P5.. its a glove that attaches to my hand. It also has a base-station with sensors. It tracks the movement of my glove... and also the bending of fingers. It took a while to get used to, but I love it, it works great as a mouse and sweet in games! But it's also very similar, IMO, to how the Wiimote seems to be working. Who cares?! As long as it pwns, I'm happy.

Rumor: Wii to sell for $249? [update 2]

May 9th 2006 3:17AM (Joystiq)
Hah. Funny.

The estimated $250 is purely an estimate. Nintendo ALSO announced that we dont know everything about the Wii. So there WILL be more news... today (1:15 AM where I am :-D). A console, 2 controllers, and 2 nunchakus, even now, would be worth $250 USD in my oppinion. With today's announcements... I would buy Revolution for $250 even with 1 controller, or so I'm assuming, because they seem pretty excited over their announcement.

If you dont like an ESTIMATED price, shut your yap and wait! I've heard estimates of the PS3 of $750 from some people. In fact, I think that's what the console ACTUALLY costs, and Sony is taking a loss... so estimates can be high. Estimates can also be low... the estimate of $150 is what so many people latched on to for Wii, and now that they might be wrong, they're angry.

Only a few hours to go. Grab a coke or a beer, sit, wait, and watch... and if you're lucky enough to be going to E3, wet yourself maybe once or twice. I'm gonna sleep, and when I wake up, I expect new news!! XD
