Anti-Aliased: A few thoughts on the Final Fantasy XIV beta pt. 2

Broken link (requires a login)...and it's odd to me that the most prolific FFXIV fan site is supported by LOTRO ads. (:

Anti-Aliased: A few thoughts on the Final Fantasy XIV beta pt. 2

I was very much looking forward to this game, but eventually gave up after trying to manually fix the patcher every time a new patch comes out (check the fan sites for the engaging instructions covering how to manually torrent individual patch files, unpack/place/etc). It was almost comical that each new patch would lock at a different point, say "99.4%", which I'd Google immediately, and consistently find pages and pages of people having the same problem in forums on fan sites (and yes, my correct ports are open). For me it has made it nearly impossible to even play the game - which feels like a bad sign.

I also find it strange that you compared guildleves with MMO quests, without bringing up the odd (aka punishing) design choices. Things like 48 hour lock-out timers, disconnecting in any form disallows you from continuing (until unlock), and that they're all (I believe) timed. While I haven't experienced it myself, I've also heard numerous times that there are very few of them right now, causing you to run out of content in a couple of hours of playtime - requiring a 2-day wait to re-engage. Hopefully that's fixed by release, but obviously that's a short time away.

Based on my limited playtime (a few hours), my biggest complaint would actually be (for lack of better phrasing) how your character interacts with the world around them, and how latched you are to it. True to a Final Fantasy, this game has no "jump". While that may seem insignificant, where it becomes a problem is when you see where you need to go, right below you, yet you have to walk for 2 minutes to get there because you can't simply fall. This happened to me numerous times, sometimes where the place I needed to go was half an inch below me, but the terrain required me to walk all the way around to get there. To some this may not matter, but to me it just felt tedious and was a big turnoff.

That said, the game is pretty.

I do find it funny that they make a big deal about a "gamers bill of rights", with their right to a finished product at release - and then patch in a tutorial two days after release, while holding off on multi-player functionality because they're just too tired to get it together (most likely not the dev teams fault, but rather bad planning from up above).

My problem is that it feels like an indie product with a commercial price tag. And yes I bought it, and yes I experienced pretty much every problem people are screaming about. Ultimately "unfinished" would be the most obvious word to summarize the issue.

This is literally the only DS game that I've ever actively been -angry- at. It's complex only for the sake of being complex (note the 100 tutorials).

As of right now the Apple App Store has just over 226k apps (http://148apps.biz/app-store-metrics/). I believe it is roughly 4x the size of the Android store.

I've been using this app for a while now, it's great. I honestly have no complaints about it, and agree that the typewriter sound option is a nice touch.

Google and Android: The messy truth of open-source

Anal-retentive may offend someone because they may consider it a negative trait, but if its the word "anal" in it that annoys them - they're just uninformed. It's a phrase that comes out of the world of psychology, as in - it's in any dictionary.

I'd say "whipped" would offend a few less people, as many women (and some men I assume?) aren't a fan of the "P-word" in any sexual context. But given the connotation I'm sure that'll still annoy some people.

Beyond that you'd have to get a bit more creative. Off the top of my head I got nothin' - but I'm tired.

@Sebastian - I'm not offended in the least (I laughed at the use), but your comparison there is way off. "Anal retentive" is generally not considered rude, "pussy-whipped" is not considered rude amongst a group of drunk guys watching the game.
