National Doughnut Day Freebies

Jun 5th 2009 12:49PM (Slashfood)
I found a list of store in Dallas participate in the celebration of national donut day 2009.

National Donut Day is on the first Friday of June each year. The holiday celebrates the doughnut (a.k.a "donut") %u2014 an edible, ring-shaped piece of dough which is deep-fried and sweetened. Many American doughnut stores offer free doughnuts on National Doughnut Day. In 2009, both independent doughnut shops and large national franchises offered free doughnuts in the United States

Too Hot to Handle - Feast Your Eyes

Mexican hot sauce typically focuses more on flavor than on intense heat. The sauces are hot, but the individual flavors of the peppers are pronounced. Vinegar is used sparingly or not at all. Chipotles (dried and smoked jalapeño peppers) are a very popular ingredient of Mexican hot sauce. Some sauces produced in Mexico are high-vinegar-content similar to the American Louisiana-style sauces. Mexican-style sauces are also produced internationally

'Jam It, Pickle It, Cure It: And Other Cooking Projects' - Cookbook Spotlight

Jun 4th 2009 11:50PM (Slashfood)
I love that author Karen Solomon considers her new cookbook, Jam It, Pickle It, Cure It, to be a handbook for kitchen food crafting. I often lament the fact that I’m not crafty in the traditional sense. Knitting gives me anxiety, painting makes me angry, and God forbid I try to sew anything, but I certainly know how to use my KitchenAid mixer and with this book as a guide I may yet find my very own alternative craft niche in the world.

Microwave Cooking Gets Haute With Wylie Dufresne

Jun 4th 2009 11:45PM (Slashfood)

The central issue is whether there's such a thing as a "microwave effect"--that is, whether microwaves do anything that conventional heating methods don't. The main way microwaves heat up a plate of leftovers is by causing the food molecules to vibrate--an accelerated version of what ordinary cooking does. The microwave effect, if it exists, is more mysterious and potentially a lot scarier. For example, some conjecture that certain frequencies of microwave radiation can resonate with food, body tissues, and whatnot. Just as a low-power radio wave reaching a tuned-in boom box can rattle windows, a seemingly innocuous beam of microwave energy striking a harmonically attuned target may have disruptive effects. Microwave ovens aren't the only or necessarily the most urgent cause for alarm, either. Another significant source of microwaves, admittedly of a different frequency, is the ubiquitous cell phone, which people hold for extended periods to their ears, only a few centimeters from their brains.

Anthony Bourdain's 13 Places to Eat Before You Die

Jun 4th 2009 11:43PM (Slashfood)
Bourdain made a point to say that he eats for pleasure, that as a chef he's in the business of pleasure — not local or organic — he doesn't care where the tomato comes from, as long as it tastes good.

Full of Beans - Feast Your Eyes

Jun 4th 2009 11:22PM (Slashfood)

I followed this recipe almost exactly (something new for me) and it was ... wow ... incredible. I served it at a party, and got rave reviews -- two people even asked for the recipe! Based on the feedback of others, I started out with only 1 tbl of sugar, then added more to taste. The end result was probably close to 2 tbl. I also added a bit of lemon and lime zest to the dressing. Warning: I think this recipe ends up closer to 10 servings. I had to make it in my huge wooden salad bowl, because even my largest mixing bowl wasn't adequate. By the way, this is even better after a few days, when the flavors have time to fully meld. I usually make this at least two days ahead of time.

Delicious Dips into YumSugar

Jun 4th 2009 11:09PM (Slashfood)
Believe it or not, we're not finished with all of our Fancy Foods coverage. There are still a few trends that I wanted to discuss in a little more depth, so expect a few more posts throughout the week. Today it's the all things alcohol trend. Okay, so this isn't exactly a new thing, but it was definitely something I noticed a lot of. There were organic mixers, regular mixers; hand bottled infused alcohols, organic alcohols, new flavors and so much more.
