Annual reminder: Xbox Live trash talk is vile

Nov 28th 2007 8:05PM (Joystiq)
Dear Fox News,
I’ve just finished watching your “Xbox Live Trash Talk” video and I feel like you guys have singled out all Xbox Live gamers and more specifically the Halo 3 players. Don’t get me wrong, I despise the language that I hear on Xbox Live as much as you guys, but I know how to act like a mildly intelligent human being and mute the person. I’m a 16 year old avid gamer who plays Halo 3 frequently and I don’t trash talk, bit of a shocker eh?
After viewing the news piece several times I have came to the conclusion that it is a very well made scare tactic for parents, stupid parents at that. If the parents don’t want their child to be exposed to such language then their child shouldn’t do the following things, Go to school, Play Xbox Live, Play online in the Playstation Network, go on the internet, watch television, or go outside. You can hear even worse language at school than you can on Xbox Live, for example, at East Ridge High School the word “Jew” “N****R” and “S***K” Are thrown around so much its disgusting. On a daily basis I hear people saying “You Jew Bag, You’re a N****R Jew, You dirty S***K” Aren’t these some of the racist terms that you hear being used on Xbox Live? This being the case, why aren’t you warning parents about sending their child to school? You hear sexual innuendos all the time on TV and at the movies, should we all simply stop watching them to avoid the subject matter? The answer is no, we act like an intelligent being and ignore it, mute it, or turn it off.
The Xbox Live parental controls are so simple to understand it even says that there are family controls on the back of the box that the Xbox came in. This brings up an even bigger issue, if the parents are too ignorant to read up about the 400$ piece of hardware that they’re buying for their child; they shouldn’t buy it at all. It is the parents choice to buy their child these “M” rated games, it’s their choice to spend 7$ a month on Xbox Live, and it is their decision to buy something that they know nothing about. Microsoft has made major strides to keep children safe, in their next update they’re adding a timer that enables the parent to limit the time their child spends on said game. It’s up to the parent to look into these things, ignorance is no excuse.
90% through the Video you bring up how different events happened around America because they were playing XBL and did something stupid. This piece sounded like a direct attack against the online system its self when Xbox Live isn’t even the real issue. The issue is more with parents who haven’t told their children what to do and not to do online as well as some children’s constant desire for attention. Maybe we should ask why the parents aren’t doing their jobs as the child’s mother and father; maybe we should look at why the child was seeking the love of an older person, especially online. There are bigger issues at hand that you simply skipped over. This kind of thing happens on other websites like Myspace and online message boards, why don’t you look at them instead of an online gaming community?
Xbox Live has been a flourishing online community for over five years now, 90% of the games released now have online play and you will hear this trash talk no matter what you do. As a parent it is your job to decide what you kid should play and what he shouldn’t play, if you don’t play an active part in your child’s life you won’t be able to make sure that they don’t do something stupid online or offline. The vulgar and racist language will be everywhere and no matter what you do your child will be exposed to it, thus is life, but you can help prevent it. Just look up the parental controls or ask around on Xbox.com or something of that nature. Learn how to use these new technologies and it will make all of our lives easier. Feel free to contact me via E-Mail if you actually read this and have any comments on it. (I'm not giving you my phone #, sorry Joystiq.)

Thank you and have a great night,
Jordan

Are you not aware that you can go to the players tab and mute them?
