Activision's George Rose calls out supporters of California violent game law

Dec 31st 2010 2:32PM (Joystiq)
@kgoo867 The whole problem with this is that you'll need a government entity that decides which content goes under which category which treads too close to government censorship for my tastes. There's no longer any choice involved...you're being told what content is and isn't appropriate for consumption and trying to buy things that don't fit in the government definition makes you a criminal.

What we need is for parents to not be lazy S.O.B.s and get involved in their children's lives and educate themselves in things that their children are interested in. There are already ratings on the boxes so you know what type of content the different games have. If you know what type of content your children are interested in, you'll know what topics need to be addressed. No law can replace good, involved, parenting.

New, hard-hitting Tomb Raider images posted by Game Informer

@neoXmahi: You also realize that Crystal Dynamics weren't the developers of the early Tomb Raiders and didn't start working on it until AFTER they stopped working on LoK, right? Oh, silly me. I forgot that Uncharted fanboys never need to be bogged down by facts in order to 'spread the word'. You guys are like a cult.

PC Gamer: New Tomb Raider to be open world, feature young Lara

Sep 21st 2010 11:14PM (Joystiq)
I call bull****. For one thing, it's a 'news source' pulling from another 'news source' without actually providing any context for the quote they provide. Secondly, the game hasn't even been officially announced yet, so why would they be giving out details like that? No way that it's official. Gameinformer picked this up as well, and I think they have it right. This is simply nothing more than a rumor being sold as actual news.

First Lara Croft DLC pack free for 30 days on Xbox 360

"Square Enix didn't announce a release date for the DLC, but it wouldn't be much of a conciliatory measure if it didn't arrive before the September 28 release of the online patch."
So even though they're giving away the content for free even though they didn't really have to, you'll still complain if it comes out after the patch? Talk about biting the hand that feeds you.

First Lara Croft DLC pack free for 30 days on Xbox 360

@AZRoboto Agree with everything except the Limbo part, but that's just because I love that game.

People here never seem to be satisfied with anything and always look for stuff to complain about. The game's $15 and currently has a metacritic of 88% and runs for 5+ hours by review accounts. What the hell more do you guys want?

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light plunders PS3, Steam on Sep. 28, five DLC packs in 2010

Aug 7th 2010 7:42AM (Joystiq)
@The Harbinger of Pie Everyone who immediately assumes this obviously has no idea how development works. More often than not, DLC is being created while the main game is in submission or manufacturing by people who've already rolled off of the main game and isn't usually fleshed out until they start working on it. Some of the assets used may have been cut from the main game, but it would likely have been cut anyway for one reason or another. DLC simply allows them time and resources to revisit content that would, otherwise, never would have seen the light of day. The rest of it is new content that probably wasn't even fully fleshed out until after the main game was finished when the developers actually have time to concentrate on it.

Lara Croft still likes all kinds of guns

@Misfit Toy There isn't one. They redesigned the puzzles and encounters to work with one player if you play in single player.

Lara Croft exclusive to Xbox Live Arcade for 'exactly' four weeks

@ged2000000 Do you really think 100k customers will throw a temper tantrum like you just because the game is going to come out a little later?

GameStop: Used game buyers uninterested in free DLC

Mar 19th 2010 11:15PM (Joystiq)
@ColossalHat
Completely missing the point. Every time someone buys a used game, the only one seeing a profit off of the purchase is the retailer. Publishers get ZERO from that transaction. That's an additional person playing their product who is doing so without providing anything to the publisher's bottom line. In that sense, the used game market might as well equate to piracy.

Now consider the fact that games make a sizable percentage of their profit in the first two months after release, after which sales taper off dramatically and you have to see why publishers and developers don't like the fact that Gamestop pushes used game sales almost as hard or harder than new game sales almost immediately after the game is available. Gamestop's practices are pushing people who very well may have made a purchase that could benefit the publishers into dumping their money into the retailer's coffers, exclusively. Frankly, I don't understand how you can't see how messed up this is.

As far as devs complaining too much, until you've worked 10-14 hour days for weeks/months at a time in order to get a game out with the hopes that it will good enough to attract gamers and subsequently earn enough profit for the publisher to earn you and your team a bonus for all your collective sacrifices only to see the new sales fall short of target because a large chunk of the public who are playing the game bought it used, you really have no place to talk.

Add to that the fact that they don't have to send ANY money from a used game sale to the publisher and you can see why GameStop pushes used sales so hard and why publishers/developers hate the practice so much...the pubs/devs make all the investment in making the product, and GameStop goes out of their way to make sure that they get as little profit back from the investment as possible.
