Preview: Mortal Kombat

For some reason I couldn't reply to you earlier, anyway, heres the IGN interview with Ed Boon: http://ps3.ign.com/articles/109/1098513p1.html

"We're also talking about a new take on the series' story. "Mortal Kombat has this timeline - eighteen years of making games, and we really didn't want to just continue, like, chapter seventeen of the whole story," says Ed Boon, the co-creator of the series. "So we're kind of doing a Back to the Future type of thing, where Raiden is about to be killed by Shao Kahn, and just before he delivers the last blow, he sends a mental message to his earlier self, so the camera rewinds back to Mortal Kombat 1. The Raiden from back then gets a message and he doesn't know what's going on, but he knows something bad's going to happen, and the game spans Mortal Kombat 1, 2 and 3, retelling the story with an enlightened Raiden, and he's changing the course of things, so everything you've seen happen before – Liu Kang winning, the guys turning into cybernetic ninjas, are changed around, so you might see a character become cybernetic who wasn't before, and so you see a different version [of events]."

I'm trying to respond to VaultBoy but the comment section looks like its broken. Anyway, heres the IGN interview where Boon talks about the story: http://ps3.ign.com/articles/109/1098513p1.html

@MrFrench MK vs DC was created in an environment where Midway was about to keel over. They were desperate for as many sales as possible. WB doesn't need to be that desperate and just wants Boon and co. to make a good game. They've even told Boon they'll give him more time if he needs it.

Boon has already spilled the beans on the setup, picks up at the end of Armageddon and Raiden is about to be killed by Shao Kahn, and he sends a message back in time to himself to before MK1. And then the story starts off from there except things don't unfold as you expect them. Liu Kang might not win the tournament, different people may be turned into cybernetic robots, etc.

Max Payne 3 delayed beyond October; L.A. Noire & Civ 5 still due this fall

Okay I looked and I found the proof that they are basing it off the Max Payne 2 actor:

you'd have to look through the neogaf Max Payne 3 shots but they had side by side pics of the actor from Max Payne 2 and concept art from Max Payne 3 which were identical, looked like they traced the actor and then just made him look older.

I remember when the first Max Payne 3 concept art came out it was proven that Max from Max Payne 3 was based off of the actor who played Max in Max Payne 2 (and NOT Sam Lake who played Max in Max Payne 1). So no, its not a different Max, its the same one that Remedy last put in the series.

EA's 'NHL Slapshot' for Wii includes hockey stick peripheral, grinning Gretzky

May 30th 2010 2:21PM (Joystiq)
From the article it says that you can just use the wii/nunchuk alone (without the stick) or just the nunchuk. Also from the screenshot, looks like this will look WAAAAAAAAAAAAY better than any of EA's other sports games efforts. Doesn't look like a port from PS2, looks like they built the art from the ground up and looks closer to how the 360 version looks.

Also they have a deeper Be a Pro mode in this verison, starts from 12 years and goes up to the NHL

Mass Effect 2 'Alternate Appearance Pack' DLC adds new costumes

Mar 19th 2010 10:04PM (Joystiq)
its obvious bioware is releasing this costume pack because they know they royally screwed up by not giving Garrus the option to have fixed armor

Upcoming Castlevania's 'lead' console is PlayStation 3, Konami producer says

Jan 20th 2010 8:13AM (Joystiq)
The 360 has 512mb shared system/gpu memory while the PS3 splits it into 256mb system memory and 256 gpu memory. That plus the 10MB EDRAM in the 360 makes it a lot easier on programmer's lives.

With the PS3 to make up for the memory deficiency, texture streaming has to be highly optimized and the Cell PSUs have to be used for image processing effects (motion blur, AA, etc). However, all of that has to be manually coded and that costs time and money to develop. Its not about laziness as most people say.

Also, I don't know the technical details behind it but it seems that most of the time PS3 games do have better AF than 360 games.
