Nintendo DS Lite cracks on hinge

Jul 17th 2006 11:42AM (Joystiq)
I did indeed get this crack on my ds lite. I thought it was just me.

Wii launch date Nov. 6 says SI for Kids

Jul 3rd 2006 5:12AM (Joystiq)
In regard to conversation started with (retarded) post #22.
The GTAs, RE3s, and Halos of the world can be great fun, but they are not mature. Give me a break. They are not mature. None of those games has any character in them that solves problems in a rational or realistic way. And you might have noticed that your average adult finds GTA either mortifying, retarded, or both. So let's just call them for what they are: violent video games.
And yes, in the past, the older game player tended to go for the violent video games. However, this is not an inevitable situation. Recently, Nintendo got the bright idea to match adults with games that were actually mature. It's a little game called Brain Age, currently the top selling game in the US.

PSP third in sales, yet first in quality

Nope, none come to mind actually. You must be thinking of the full blown sequels to already established franchies, like Mario Kart, Metroid, Castlevania, etc. A sequel isn't the same thing as a port though. It's like the difference between the DVD release of a movie, and the sequel to that movie. Not that it would be possible to port a console game to DS, or that I would want them to.
These sequels are in addition to brand new properties like Phoenix Wright, Meteos, the brain training games, etc.

I think Tycho from penny arcade put it best:

"The games hitting the DS now in their major franchises aren't the filthy ports with a few bonuses tacked on I feared would dominate the machine - they're actually the legitimate sequels, definitive versions that replace the old ones in terms of features and I daresay fun. The new Animal Crossing game for the DS is Animal Crossing II, with the multiplayer that was clamored for. The Mario Kart that is out for the DS is the new Mario Kart. Not the "portable version," not the constrained subset. It's the most robust offering in the franchise."

PSP third in sales, yet first in quality

Jun 30th 2006 9:33PM (Joystiq Playstation)
Yeah. PSP games are so awesome. That's why they sell so well. Count the psp games on this list:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/new-for-you/top-sellers/-/videogames/468642/ref=pd_ts_tb_f/103-6737152-5823868
If you can't find one, feel free to try the next page...and the next.....and the next.

Fact: Not many people are interested in full priced watered-down ports of games that were designed to be played while sitting on your couch at home. Take these kinds of games from the psp library, and then see how the quality comparison runs down.

DS Opera browser lacks Flash, video, sound & PDF support

Here is just one example of why they don't want to include flash:

That and the fact that flash is proprietary.

DS Lite buyer's guide 3.0

Jun 20th 2006 11:42PM (Joystiq)
You psp people are just mad because you bought a 200 dollar paperweight.

Seriously, I have no pity. PSP had it's day in the media sun. It got so bad that I'd be reading the DS described, in the DS section of Gamespot no less, as the "readheaded stepchild of portable gaming now that the PSP is released." I for one enjoy a good turnabout. Take that!

Need to protect your DS Lite? Strapped for cash? Just grab some glue and a pair of old jeans

Jun 16th 2006 10:12AM (Joystiq)
Actually #8, you are the one who missed the primary point, at least to the author. He starts out with this:
"Among my first observations was the fact that despite being truly pocket sized, it unfortunately lacked a way of taking any games or accessories with you. The boxes games come in are illogically large and there wasn't really a good way to stow headphones."

It was to this that I directed my comment.

You could do that. Or you could just use an altoids box, like the one seen here http://www.thezeroboss.com/images/altoids.jpg
sold at any convenience store.
The dimensions just happen to be perfect for exactly 8 DS games, or 2 ds games and 1 gba game.

Wii will cost $200 say spectators

May 17th 2006 5:05PM (Joystiq)
I think that there is a case to be made that it will sell for under 200 dollars.
Every nintendo console prior to the wii was launched at around 200 dollars, and some say the same will be true for the wii launch. There is a difference though. The $200 launch price of each of those previous consoles reflected the costs of manufacturing a machine that represented the latest in graphics technology. Keep in mind that nintendo has always had a steadfast policy of making a profit on all their console sales, unlike their competitors. Thus, while the cost of manufacturing each previous console at their launch is unknown, we do know that it must have been less than 200 dollars.

The Wii, on the other hand, will not have the latest in graphics technology, and it will probably be the cheapest console that nintendo ever had to manufacture. Thus, there is good reason to speculate that the will could release for less than 200 dollars, and still make a profit to boot.

And if they really wanted, the could take the strategy of the other companies and sell their console for less than cost of manufacturing just to get market share. If they took that as far as Sony does, Nintendo would probably pay us to get a wii.

New Mario lacks 'newness,' says Infendo

May 11th 2006 12:19AM (Joystiq)
Sorry Rollin, you are dead wrong here. I think Mario is put into new situations all the time. Dancing, playing tennis, basketball, jetting around with a water pack. I see nothing wrong with getting back to his roots every now and then, and the portable systems are the perfect platform for that. Nintendo gives us innovative gameplay constantly, and they have well earned their right to profit off of nostalgia every now and then.
Hope to see you at the next nintendo world store overnight Rollin!
