A look at EA's new realism tools

May 13th 2006 11:47AM (Joystiq)
wanderer,

I've heard a lot of people talk about wanting games to be mainstream and that's what Nintnedo is aimning for, but when you consider that the gamming industry is bigger than the movie industry. Now doe'sn that tell us that gamming industry is already mainstream?

I think when people here are talking about gaming going mainstream they are talkig about mothers and grannies playing video games too. lol This simply will never happen.

Wii impressions: the E3 experience

May 12th 2006 7:45PM (Joystiq)
I think a lot of James' comments are that of a disapointed man tbh. I can see where he's comming from. I'm also disapointed with Nintendo. They've given us new controller, that's it. The revolution/Wii is really just about the controller. None of the games are any different expect for some of the gimmick titles.

People critize MS and Sony for sequels and rehases but Nintendo have done exatcly the same.

I can almost guarantee that the Wii will be just another Game Cube and N64. 3rd party support will be lacking and drop off regardless of what Nintendo say. It wont outsell the PS3 either and Sony have a history of releasing over priced consoles at launch. Both the PS1 and 2 were overpriced. They do it because they know the hard core gamers will buy it no mmatter what. Then a month or two later they will drop the price.

I believe there's a lot of people kidding themselves with the Wii. They want to love it but truthfully they don't. They are in denial.

I don't know what all the fuss is about tbh and i think a lot of people's reactions are over the top.

The novelty of this contoller will soon ware off imo. Then you will look at the games and realise that you've seen it all before. From what i've seen of the Wii i have no reason to believe that it's going to be anymore succesfull than the N64 or gamecube.

The only game i'm interested in so far is Mario Galaxy. I would say Zelda too, but i can just buy that for my cube.

Wii impressions: Monkey Ball (minigames)

@6

He's not reviewing the game. He's giving us a small impression of a couple of mini games he played. What is he supposed to do? Go into great detail about a simplistic mini game when there is no great detail to go into?

Some of you people are fucking stupid, honesly.

It's simple and basic mini game for god sake. It's not fuckiing chess so WTF do you expect him to write? He said "Darts -- Hold A to grab a dart, push forward and release to throw. Then go play real darts."

What else is he supposed to write? He's throwing dart not firing a nuclear missile ffs.

Comparing a mini game on monkey ball where you throw a virtual dart to what you have to do in a game like Gears Of War is idiotic.

Sorry, but MonkeY Ball IS far more basic than Gears Of War. I terms of gameplay and looks. MB is a piss easy game to pick up but a very hard game to master and can be very diffcult. Still, the ideas in the game are much more basic than Gears of war. What do you think is more difficult to create MB or GOW?

These games are too basic for me. They would only keep me interested for a couple of hours, then i suppose i would play them for 5 or10 minutes now and again if drunk.

There's nothing new about this game and the graphics look worse than the cube version. Just another cheap rehash that probabaly took Sega five mimutes to come up with.

A lot of the Wii games sound like somthing you play at a fair ground for a few minute tbh.

I already own monkey ball for the cube but the idea of playing it with a Wii-mote does'nt really iterest me tbh. It's stil the same game after all.

Show us something revolutionary about the games themselves please Nintendo!

Wii controller impressions: day 2

# Doesn't work well with certain games, i.e. Madden where stroke motions differ than real life ones (you don't pass a football by flicking your wrist).

# If no real-life motions are associate with a game, does motion control add value to the gaming experience? (undetermined)

Exactly. You may aswell just push a button. What is exactly more realistic or immersive about flicking a remote to throw a ball instead of pressing a button?

If the action you perform with the Wii-mote does'nt represnet or have anything to do with what happens on the screen then it's a waste of time.

So i can flick a remote to through a ball instead of pressing a button? WOW, big f******* deal.

All Nintendo have done with this is isolate developers. This contoller will only work at it's best with simple party games etc.

It would'nt be so bad it the machine itslef was'nt so underpowered compared to the ps3 and 360. At least then games like Zelda, Mario and Metroid would look a whole lot better and more immersive. God i wish the actual machine was more powerfull. I look at Sonic on the 360 and i can only dream of how good Mario Galaxy would of looked on a nintendo machine with the same power.

The greatest console ever made was the SNES because it had the best graphics, great controller and great 3rd party support and games. This is what i wanted with the Wii but it's not going to happen. Damn you Nintendo. :(

Overheard at E3: fanboy disillusionment

May 11th 2006 2:29PM (Joystiq)
At the end of the day when we get down to the real meat and potato's of it all the Wii is just a slighly more powerfull console than the cube with a new controller. The actual games, Zelda, Metroid, Mario, Smaah Bros etc are just rehashes of the other games that have appeared on other nintendo consoles. The worst example being Metroid. Graphicaly and game play wise if looks EXACTLY like the cube version. Zelda for the Wii is just Ocarina of Time all over again. Smash Bros is the same. Mario Galxay is just Mario sunhsine, and from what i've seen of the gameplay so far looks too easy and less fun. New things like Excite truck etc are just dull genereic 3rd party crap. Same goes for Red Steel. As far as the graphics go the best we've seen is slightly better than the Cube, and the worst is inbetween n64 and Cube. Look at Zelda Wii which they say is pretty much a game cube game on the Wii. Well to me it looks worse than a game cube .The graphics are god awful. Also the Wii Contoller IMO is no more revolutionary than the N64 pad and it's analogue stick was at the time. Now, when i played Mario64 for the first time on my way overpirced imported japanese N64 i was blown away. The game was just amazing and the way you controlled the game was just out of this world. The pad made so much sense as soon as i laid my hands on it. I don't see the same thing happening with the Wii contoller. I'm just not excited by any of this. Lets take away the controller for a moment and what are you left with game wise? Like i've said already, just rehases of previous games. So they will play slightly differently with the Wii controller, big deal IMO. There's no new IP either. Forget generic stuff like excite Truck and Red Steel. It's time for Nintendo to ditch console hardware and just stick to peripherals and games. It would of been so amazing to see what they could of done with the games alone on the PS3 and 360.

I keep hearing people talk abut inovation and amazing revolutionary gampepay but apart from the Contoller i just don't see it.

For me the Wii is just a controller and nothing more. The console itslef means nothing to me, nor do the games which we've seen all before.

The actual console was just a waste of time.

There's new here apart from the controller and some drunken wacky party games.

As far as the game go they are no more intesting to me than what Microsft and Sony have on offer.

PS3 impressions: Sonic the Hedgehog

The first shot is from Sonic on the wii. It's easy to see that.

Check out some the HD real time videos and you will see that p3s and 360 Sonic looks amazing.
