Apple investigating issues with iOS 4 upgrade on iPhone 3G

Jul 29th 2010 12:52AM (Engadget)
For the millions of us iPhone 3G owners, this issue is a much bigger deal than the overblown antenna issue for the 4.

Only temporary solution to make things bearable that I've found is do a force reboot by holding down the home button and sleep/wake at the same time until Apple logo shows up, allow phone to boot fully, and then repeat force reboot by holding home and sleep/wake buttons again. I get mostly normal performance for a day or two by doing this, but then things slow down again.

I also read earlier today that turning off all the Spotlight search sources and doing a force reboot improves things, I've done it, but hasn't been long enough to see if it makes a long term distance... It may just be the force reboot that is making people's phone's seem faster.

Really hoping Apple comes through on this, glad to hear they're at least looking into it. Anyone know of a way for consumers (not devs) to do the equivalent of submitting a Radar bug report/issue to help boil these things up to the top priority for Apple. I've heard that Radar is the best way to get Apple's attention to resolve issues

Apple keeps antennagate alive with Droid X's 'kill switch' (video)

@cannoli That's exactly what the vast majority of iPhone 4 owners say too, they cannot recreate the issue because it only happens in places with a very weak/poor signal. Same situation here... Do you understand Apple's reaction to this whole thing better now?

iOS 4.0.1 hitting iPhones right this second (update: 3.2.1 for iPads, too)

Jul 16th 2010 8:25AM (Engadget)
@SiXiam

There is no comparison between an iPhone launch and the Droid X. There were hundreds of thousands of people lined up and millions of phones sold in a matter of days on iPhone launch, while there were virtually no lines for Droid X and Verizon sending out a press release yesterday letting people know that there was no shortage of the devices. As exciting as it may be to Engadget-reading Android fans, it's unlikely it willl be a mainstream, mass-market success.

Apple's MobileMe iDisk App updated for iPad, redesigned Calendar goes beta

I like the cleaner, more modern look of this design as compared to the current calendar app on iPad. Hope that when iOS4 gets ported to the iPad they replace what's currently there with this....

@djbentley you can use Google Sync on the iPhone and have been able to since iOS 2.0 I think... Google has Exchange servers setup to work with Gmail, Gcal and Gmail Contacts that will sync via push to the iPhone... I've been doing this forever

Apple: iPhone 4 reception problem is a software issue, fix coming in 'a few weeks'

Jul 2nd 2010 12:47PM (Engadget)
Apple's conclusion is the same as Anandtech's: the range to show 5 bars is too big, there is a drop in reception with the "death grip" or bridging the black strip on the lower left, but in a strong signal area that doesn't affect reception to the point where you will drop the call. In a low reception area, you will obviously drop the call. The overall reception, even with these issues, is better than the 3GS and other previous iPhones.

You must read John Gruber's translation of their press release, it's hilarious and inciteful. http://daringfireball.net/2010/07/translation_iphone_4

Hate on haters. The iPhone 4 is amazing. The vast majority of people put their iPhone's in cases and will never experience this problem. I live in Manhattan, see hundreds of iPhones out and about the city a week and those running around naked without cases are few and far between.

Also, why do people keep saying the iPhone 4 is overpriced? $199 is the standard entry price for premium smart phones and the fit and finish of the iPhone is head and shoulders above any other mass market device out there.

Didn't eat all day so I could take a late lunch break and run down there to get a ticket. Other times I've gone when it was at the Times Center on the weekends I've just walked up shortly after the time they were supposed to give out tickets and there was never a line and no problem getting a ticket.

Got there at 5:05 and there was a huge line around the block and they weren't even giving out tickets yet... Only get a half hour for break so couldn't stick around and wait hoping that I was below the 200 mark, had to turn around and haul it back to work at 38th and Broadway. It's hot out. I'm a sweaty, sad and hungry mess now.

Feel bad for me Engadget and please send me Josh's poor little scratched up iPhone 4 review unit. I'll an old 3GS... I'm stuck with an Original 2007 iPhone with a battery that only lasts about an hour of use when unplugged and 3.1.3. No folders...

Didn't see this post/thread and the comment about getting there at 3, only checked the older post about this show. Did people have to wait from 3-5 just to get tickets even once there were more people than tickets?

One more thing... two iPod touch prototypes with camera briefly show up on eBay

Apr 25th 2010 11:20AM (Engadget)
Seems like a lot of commenters didn't read the actual story... These are NOT prototypes for the next gen iPod touch, these are prototypes for the ones you can buy now, proving that the camera really was a part of it until just shortly before production and then was pulled for some reason. Much more definitive than "there's a space in the device where a camera could fit" which is the evidence, outside of early case leaks, there was before.

The most likely reason for yanking the camera is cost... Same reason we're not seeing a camera in the iPad yet... In Apple's earnings call last week when asked about iPad margins they said that they've priced it very aggressively and that over time, with scale of production, they'll be able to bring down their costs down to make the devices more profitable.

Also from that earnings call, Apple said it gets average of $600 in revenue per iPhone 3GS including carrier subsidies, while with the 3rd Gen iPod touches (current 32GB & 64GB versions that with the exception of the camera, GPS and cell radio have similar internals to the 3GS) they're only getting $299 and $399.

Steve Jobs apparently says original iPhone won't be upgraded in the future

Apr 12th 2010 4:06PM (Engadget)
I'm still using my original iPhone. After the announcement last week, I had a feeling this was going to be the case. I wish they would allow for paid upgrades, seeing as the 3G and original iPhone are similar spec-wise. But, if you look back to what my iPhone looked like when it launched almost 3 years ago, and you look at the device in my pocket now, I've gotten A LOT of value out of that $399 purchase.

If you look at where people are with Android devices who are stuck on 1.5 or 1.6 or the brand new HD2 that will be totally obsolete by the WP7 launch in the fall and unable to upgrade, I've had a pretty good ride with my original iPhone.

What really concerns me is app authors who update their apps to be compatible with 4.0 and in doing so maybe break backwards 3.x compatibility. With the increased capabilities provided by apps, and the OS upgrades so far, I've been able to resist buying new hardware, but if I can't get updates to my apps, I foresee an iPhoneHD in my future (hopefully with an A4 processor)
