Bloomberg: Palm is up for sale

Apr 12th 2010 12:03AM (Engadget)
@Anubisdragoon

Interesting idea, because if there's anything that Android desperately needs right now it's some well-thought out UI polish.

The problem is that Google isn't typically very good at acquiring things and successfully integrating them into existing products...

The two OSs are very different from a development standpoint though.

Google would very likely just buy it for the mobile patents to help weather the storm against Apple, maybe (hopefully) use some of the talent at Palm to help clean up Android, but would likely just let WebOS languish. Maybe they'd open-source it?

Really hope HTC buys them... I'm an avid iPhone user since it first came out, but a WebOS HD2/Evo4G-like slate device would be really tempting.

iPhone OS 4 not coming to the iPad until the fall

Apr 8th 2010 6:29PM (Engadget)
@Aaquibn

John Gruber & Jim Dalrymple have the answers...
http://daringfireball.net/linked/2010/04/08/bits-iphone-live

Gruber: "The iPad, like any such project at Apple was developed by a team that was locked away in secrecy, so the team working on iPhone OS 4.0 only found out about the iPad when the rest of us did, on January 27; Dalrymple has it exactly right: OS 4.1 will be the unified OS for all these devices."

Dalrymple, in the piece linked to by Gruber, predicted a month ago to the day that iPad would see 4.1 in the fall.

Gruber is prescient, right down to the Skype and Pandora demos in today's event.

Is this the Apple tablet? (update: new images)

Jan 27th 2010 11:04AM (Engadget)
We've been hearing 10" screen for a long time, and most techies thought the way we do and assumed that meant diagonally as in the way we measure flat panel displays.

But it seems to me that most the rumors on size have been from people in the print and publishing industry, in case you haven't realized it yet, they are technically challenged.

Print and publishing people think in terms of paper, in other words, length and width. For that matter, so do most regular (non-Engadget reading) people.

This looks pretty real to me. I also did some super nerdy analysis of that light gray rounded rectangle on the full Apple invite and this aspect ratio and size is about what I came up with: 7.5"x10" (an inch smaller on both sides as a piece of letter-sized paper, but about the same aspect ratio)
