Why do people bitch about the proprietary format thing all the time. outside of the n64 (where it made things more expensive to buy and to produce for) the only reason to complain about proprietary formats is that you can't pirate the games easily. That's like not shopping at a store because they have the little alarm at the doors that goes off when you try to shoplift.
I don't know if I would want to play any of these over Xbox Live though. It's bad enough when someone gets analysis paralysis and you have 3 other people in the room to keep you company. It would suck having to wait by yourself for someone in another part of the world to make up their mind.
I don't know if I should be ashamed or proud that I've played just about every game mentioned in this thread. My brother owns all of them. And I agree they are all good games.
Seriously Steve17 I think you are that guy masturbating to the naked boobies in video games and giggling like a school girl when you kill that hooker with a chainsaw. Simply because his name posted as Nintendofan doesn't mean he didn't have a good point. Nintendo does make kiddie games. But most the games haters like to identify as kiddie games aren't. A true kiddie game is something enjoyed almost exclusively by kids who's taste in games is undeveloped. It's why movie games can make a profit. As for games like grand theft auto. I'd place that firmly in the tween to frat boy category.
Anyone who bitches about the Wii being a toy needs to get over himself. They're all toys. At least if the main thing you are doing on them is playing games. That's what a toy is something you interact with for enjoyment. Stop taking gaming so god damn seriously. You are not doing anything terribly important. You're not really saving the world from Alien scum or becoming a rock star it's all just make believe. And don't give me that "it's art" bullshit. While it might be true that doesn't make it not a toy. All toys involve some form of art there's a level of design in everything. Seriously stop hating, get over yourself, get out of the basement every once in a while. I love games but you guys take this way too seriously.
I would like to believe that Ubisoft big wigs are sitting in their offices right now going: "Wow, imagine if we actually started making some good games on it". I did like Raving Rabbids and from what I understand Red Steel was more a show of potential than anything else hopefully they take more time with the polishing. You have to do this if you truly want to compete with Nintendo in the game market.
The thing about the casual/non-gamer market is they aren't going should I get a PS3, 360, or Wii. They aren't weighing the quality of the games or graphics. All it takes to get these people to buy is that one game. It takes Wii sports or Brain Age and it doesn't matter where the system is at in it's life cycle. If a game that gets the buzz going for that crowd comes out the sales will skyrocket. And install base is install base. The people buying the Wii's are at least connected to a gamer somehow. These gamers are pushing their Mom or Dad to buy these systems because they want to share their hobby with the people they have so far been unable to share it with. Even if there is a large number of "buy only one game" people in the install base it does create numbers that look very appealing to game producers and the more games for a system the more appealing it starts to be to everyone.
I don't expect wii to ever appeal to the hardcore graphics crowd but I think this crowd is in an extreme Minority even among true gamers. The graphic improvements are getting less and less noticeable for bigger and more expensive jumps in power.
I think the Wii shows much more potential in being the system that appeals to everyone. And I'm talking about the "it's about the game play" BS, although that helps. The reason the PS2 did so well is that it had something for everyone. RPG, FPS, Platformers, sports and even the quirky little games like Katamari all had multiple good representations on the system. It had plenty for both hardcore and casual gamers. Nintendo and MS both had big gaps in its game varieties.
This time around Sony seems to really be dropping the ball as far as appealing to wide variety. The 360, while a step in the right direction, is still not there is not there yet. A lot of gamers, even non Japanese ones, have a "Japanese" mentality about games and until MS can create more for this market than just Blue Dragon they will not see huge success. Now Nintendo Wii hasn't had the variety of games that the PS2 had but it's on the right track. A lot of publishers are wanting to make games for it. Being far cheaper to produce for helps. The rapidly growing install base helps. I think by the end of 2008 we will see top notch games from almost all genres on the Wii along with more games for the system in general. It's like the DS, the industry is not lightning fast it will take a little while to figure out how to use the new interface. This is just my own analysis though. This generation is one case I don't think history is any indication for what will happen in the future.
Maybe this is the one case that Perry was right and someone else was misinformed. It doesn't make much sense for Nintendo to still be producing GCs. She's like Nintendo's version of...well everyone at Sony.
