I was not trying to be harsh. But yes, I do tend to be very critical of religion in general.
How can that quote be out of context? I see using that phrase if you are referring to the book as a whole, but there are plenty more passages that expound the same thing. For every quote that condones violence, it can be countered by a quote that promotes peace and love. But that is precisely my issue.
I do have to disagree about ANY religion, being necessary. This implies that only religion can teach us what is ethical or moral. There are plenty of people that do not live within the confines of a religious rule set, that are happy, law abiding, loving people. Just as there are plenty of religious that are not. And I know that just become some religious people or organizations may have "lost their way" and is not indicative of the general nature of that religion, you can also say that just because someone lacks religioun does not mean they are inherently prone to evil. (Not that that what you wre saying)
But it has become un-PC to say anything against ANY religion nowadays. Everyone is so afraid to disagree.
I hate the idea of "tolerance". As a minority in this country ( I am native american), the last thing I would want to be is just "tolerated". What is so hypocritical though is that for all their posturing of "we are tolerant of all religions" it doesn't change the fact that they believe that they are right and the others are wrong. And what really gets me is that no one will ever know for a fact until we die.
Okay... think this is going on a bit. I am sure we can be on here all day in discussion. :)
You are absolutely right. For the most part, ALL of it can be considered brainwashing. And one is no better than the other. That is specifically why I do not belong to any "atheist groups" and such. They are just as heavy handed and elitist as religious groups.
And was not trying to imply that you shouldn't have full say in what you teach your kids. Even without religion, the process of raising ones children is difficult enough.
I enjoy talking to people that can explain themselves and discuss these things without arguement. I always thought that there is nothing wrong with not agreeing on an issue. Actually, I've learned more about various religions in dicussions with people like you than I did while I was still going to church.
I apologize if you felt that I intruded. It was your comments that got me thinking is all. They were similar stances I've heard before. Which is the reason I tried to clarify that the "you" I was talking about was not specifically you.
You did make my point however. You DO have a right to believe in what you want, raise your kids how you want. But most who believe in any religion feel the need to attack others.
I don't expect you to agree with me on what is or is not fantasy. That was not my point. If you do actually think that EVERYONE has a right to raise their kids as they see fit, such as yourself, then I have no issue you with you. And you were not "you" I was referring to.
And trying to use the "because I am not a believer is the reason I don't 'understand' arguement... You can do better than that.
I grew up and around various churches until I joined the military at 20. With 80% of my family still regular church-goers, I know full well the doctrines and teaches of various religions.
Since you obviously do not want to talk about it, then please, just disregard my statements. I will bother you no more.
"Teaching your kid the difference between fantasy and reality is alot different than teaching your kids what to think about a theological worldview."
It is completely the same thing depending on your views. To some, theology IS fantasy. For the same reason you, in the general sense, do not follow Zeus, is exactly the same as others not believing in God. If you would not be worried about "offending" a worshipper of Apollo or Ares, why should I worry about offending those that believe in God?
In that reality, how can we offend something that does not exsist? That is akin to being offended at someone saying that Santa Claus is not real.
I find it offensive that I must be told by others how to live my life based on a book written by man. just because these writing "claim" to be holy, does not make it a fact that they are so. You "believe" it to be so. That is the nature of "faith" and "belief". If there were any real facts to religion, then those two words would not be used.
"You want your children to have a strong Biblical concept of their beliefs before they're bombarded with what the world thinks Christians believe."
Or rather, you would like to have the churches brainwashing completed to better resist the facts they may hear from logical and reasonable people. Kids, at 8 years old, are unable to think of the "theological implications" of what the movie is saying? Then why expose them to religion at all at that age. The subject matter is just as, if not more, hard to grasp.
Why is it not good enough to just not let your child see something that you would not like them to see? Why must people be "offended" to the point that it causes conflict? Not that you personally are causing "conflict".
I find it disheartening that people are unable to talk against ANY theological principle without getting attacked. As if a belief in some higher power automatically grants a more ethical, moral, and blessed life.
"Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man’s enemies will be the members of his household. He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who has found his life will lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake will find it." (Matthew 10:34-39 NASB)
Not surprised at their troubles. I helped open up a good number of the stores in the San Diego area, and they wre poorly run and had a District Manager that came from working 10 years in a shoe store.
But I understand why they have to upsell so hard. The sh!t we got from the District if you did not meet you quoata on MVP cards alone was enough to make you quit. Not sure about now, but at the time, they had no concept of adjusting quotas based on each store's traffic. All stores were required to get 20 MVP cards a week, regardless if it was a store that was lucky to see 5 people a day durng your shift. So glad I am out of retail now.
Because their trade values are better than the others, it'll be too bad if they have to close up.
