Kinectimals review: Meet Dave

@Uncle Jesse Naw, they turned the case over to the Punctuation Agency, after a tip from a spelling informant.

Carmack blows minds with id Software's Rage, running on iPhone at 60fps with 'megatextured' graphics (video)

@vision33r The PC market is WAY more fragmented than Android ever could be, and far more PCs are underpowered.

But guess which platform Rage came out on first, long before iPhone?

@Altivec I take your point - it's certainly easier to develop for the iPhone, with what, only 3 levels of hardware.

But hey, he already developed Rage on the PC, didn't he? THAT is fragmentation. The Android scene is a model of unification compared to PC dev.

Anyway, this is Carmack - he's well-known for supporting open platforms like OpenGL and Linux. I have zero doubt that he'll bring it to Android as well.

@awake AUD$999 is pretty good, but $635 after a combination of sales, coupons and affiliate refunds is better :-) Especially when it was like $1300 a few months ago.

Panasonic will offer interchangeable 3D lens for Micro Four Thirds by year's end

@Jman13 Speak for yourself, I'd buy this today. But then, I'm developing S3D software, so I already have all the viewing equipment etc (and a use for it).

You seem to forget, it's an *option*. All 3D can be viewed perfectly well in 2D, if you prefer. Nobody's forcing you to buy a new TV, and nobody's forcing you to watch *everything* in 3D if you did. Just relax, watch it however you want, and let others enjoy their choices too.

Dr. Flick goes in-depth with HDBaseT, the 'better HDMI extender'

Jul 19th 2010 10:25PM (Engadget HD)
@CtrlBurn You can extend HDMI with Cat5/6 right now, it's just a little expensive. Who knows whether HDMI/HDbaseT converters will be any cheaper.

@Pacey That's what the packet CRC is for. Bad packets are detected and ignored, so you get silent dropouts and not blasts of static. Plus pre-buffering covers all but the worst dropouts.

Still, I ain't gonna argue, wired is the better way.

Lord of the Rings movies break out of the box set, hit Blu-ray individually 9/14

@masYmas Oh come on, you can't compare LotR to the milking of the Star Wars series. They're completely different - one tries to sucker you in, the other keeps you completely informed so you can make your own decision.

Lucas tells you "Last chance ever to buy Star Wars!", then releases a special edition. Jackson says "We're releasing the standard edition first, with these special features, and we'll be releasing the SEE editions on this date, and they'll have these other features, with no overlap if you choose to buy both".

@Alan Strangis You can keep shooting as long as you like (it also removes the 30min limitation from EU models). When the file hits 3 mins/2GB, it just starts a new file. Edit them together for the full clip.

PlayStation 3 in 3D impressions: almost, but not quite

Jun 17th 2010 1:55AM (Engadget)
@jon 3D Blu-Ray movies running on a PS3 Fat?

hdmi.org yanked their 1.3a spec download a while back, but according to Silicon Image's paper, 1080p @ 120Hz is specifically supported (and 720p @ 240Hz). This isn't flagged as a 3D signal specifically, but the TV can interpret it as such and the hardware is clearly capable.

I'd agree that the PS3's GPU isn't up to the task of doing 1080p @ 120Hz and actually looking nice at the same time. But that's the hook for the next-gen consoles, isn't it?
