How one indie studio burns $15K per month (or: this graph looks like Pac-Man)

Mar 1st 2012 10:27AM (Joystiq)
@DashAttack

Depends where the studio is located at. Is sad to see how 32k is not even minimally enough if you live in a major metro city, a la NYC. If your salary isnt at least 45k you cant even make rent and food here (NYC)

Origin nets 4 million client installs, adding third-party content 'very soon'

Ok I've been a fan of valve and steam since forever, but i don't get the fanboizzz on joystiq on this issue about BF3 not offered thru Steam... I mean give me a break! EA wants to profit more on the sales of BF3, and cutting out the middleman, in this case "Steam", is an awesome way to rake in profit!

Pause for a second before you start flaming... go google Valve's product: Half-Life 2, Orange Box, Portal 2, etc... and find me a digital service provider that sell these games beside Steam. Now if Steam is making their digital version of the game to be steam exclusive... then GTO EA making their not accessible thru Steam!!! I don't see Portal 2 or Orange Box for sell on Origin either so...

and for those who said... "but but BF3 is still offer thru other digital retail beside Steam"... well to be honest the only sale competition Origin would have is Steam. Probably too much hassle to take BF3 off of D2D and all the other retailers... but i won't be surprise if BF4 is Origin Exclusive, like Portal 3 would be Steam exclusive

Battlefield 3 won't be sold on Steam; EA claims service 'restricts our ability to directly support players'

Battlefield 3 won't be sold on Steam; EA claims service 'restricts our ability to directly support players'

@Squishy3

Because steam is their biggest competitior (i never said they werent, is all business). If they kept their games on steam, no one gonna buy it through Origin (cuz heck i know i would buy it off steam). Thats a lost, and especially in all the RnD they spent in developing it.

I just dont know where we have became a community of people who gets mad and riot when a company wants make a few extra bucks. And no... there is never an end of how much more profit you can earn, would YOU ever oppose to salary raise given to you by your employer? even when your job pays you well enough for every day needs and extra?

I'm not a EA-fanboi, but the gaming community is turning into the hipster music community. You arent cool unless you are indie, mainstream = meh.

Games cost millions to make, therefore studios need millions from investor to develop an AAA title. What encourages investors to invest more? Growth! It doesnt matter that last year you made 1billion in profit, unless you make 1.1bil next year, you arent growing, therefore you arent worth investing in. What good does an investor get from a stagnet company? EA itself might be profitting, but investor not so much.

back to the other digital distributor. they make up a small percentage of overall sales for some dedicated buyers. They dont need to take their game off there to make sure they still turn a nice profit on origins. I mean listen to this community, how many people said "if its not steam im not buying it" even if its on these other distributors.

OK quick question... if you are a business man... and you have your own means to distribute your goods directly to the public... wouldnt you do it?

I mean ok, EA might be evil and what not, but they are still a business and they want to cut out the middle man and create a bigger profit. You would do the same if you own your own business too. (and this isnt a war of "steam > origin")

The Daily Grind: Are MMO players angrier than other types of gamers?

Aug 5th 2011 9:12AM (Massively)
The angry players are the min-max/elitist. They are in every game, fps, mmos, moba, anything. And they want everything a certain way, and have certain expectation for themselves and their teammates. They believe that they themselves are the answer to all problems, so if anyone does anything better than them, then the only explanation is either h4x!!! or just blindluck.

And @Razomir mentioned, MMO is just so much easier to compare immediate details to determine who’s the "better," and i use that loosely, player. And if you dare not obey to their every whims in a PuG, you sir are then epic fail!!!!

And you can see the same thing in MOBA, maybe even worse. When players see themselves with higher K:D ratios they immediately assume that they are the better player, even if you solo-handedly destory all the towers and pushed all lanes into the enemy base, and spawned ultra creeps on all lanes, but if your ratio is 0:2, and didn’t participate in the ganks, you sir are epic fail!

TL; DR: e-peen positively correlates with jerky-ness, and MMO are rulers for e-peens
