Tycho: Retro games shouldn't be reviewed

Jun 14th 2007 2:19AM (Joystiq Xbox)
The point PA was trying to make was that REVIEWING retro games can be done tastefully, like it is on 1up, but RATING retro games is mindnumbingly dumb. Tycho wrote, "It isn't impossible to discuss fundamental games in a way that is interesting and valuable. But I don't know if plugging ancient games into the Hardcore Review Machine and outputting your stupid little number improves the world."

It's reasonable for a reviewer to say whether he/she thinks a retro game release merits a purchase or not today, but it's completely unreasonable to rate that retro game using the same ol' 10-point grading scale used for new games. It's just nonsense, because rating categories like "graphics" and "sound" are beside the point on a retro release.

Insisting that XBLA games must boast "improved" graphics and sound in order for them to represent a valuable purchase is stupid. Ergo, the journalists at IGN 360 are stupid. Anyone who cares about gaming, like game journalists ought to, should NEVER be insisting that games are essentially disposable things that developers should constantly be painting new prettier art over. If games are ever going to be respected as a "medium" or as "art," then people have to first stop constantly devaluing the old classics simply because they're old.

Spies report that the enemy has returned our salvo!

So are you guys in charge of Joystiq going to get around to firing Vladimir Cole anytime soon? Please do. Most everything he writes has been shit for a long time, from that terrible Wii article till now.

It's clear that Vladmir knows absolutely nothing about the typical style of NGJ (no LOL's, but a lot more rambling inconsequential personal stories), nor that it has been completely dead for about 2 years now. Good job incompetently satirising something that's already dead and irrelevant.

Hollywood Video manager rages against Sony's machine

May 12th 2006 5:19PM (Joystiq)
-"You can look at what Sony is doing in the same respect as in, you dont need a 500hp V8 engine (Ps3) when you could just get a 300hp V6 (Xbox360) and upgrade it to 480hp."

Oh man, can the PS3 fanboys PLEASE stop claiming that the PS3 has anything resembling superior graphics or even graphical potential over the 360?

Let's be honest here. MGS4 is almost certainly not going to be in stores until Christmas 2007. And from the PS3 launch day until then, the BEST looking game even on the horizon for the PS3 is Sonic the Hedgehog. That is a problem. Especially compared to the Halo 3/Gears of War stuff being shown.

Also a problem are planned CELL core "redundancies" and a persistent, power-hungry OS.

Can we be sure that the PS3 will even come out this winter? From all the reports I've read from E3, the real-time game demos are all still running on emulation. They haven't yet stuffed the guts of the PS3 into that case, and it still doesn't seem to have enough vent holes... I wouldn't be surprised if it's delayed yet again.

I think most people are going to go for the Wii/360 with their money, given the choice. Especially since everyone who looks at the games in motion can see that, right now, 360 games look *better* than PS3 games, and the only PS3 game even on the horizon that will look better than what the 360 is offering seems to be MGS4. And that will inevitably be ported over to the 360.
