Rumor: Microsoft green-lights 360s from other companies

Jun 26th 2008 4:07PM (Joystiq)
What got Microsoft to it's current global mega-corporation status was licensing it's operating system out to people who knew what they heck they were doing with hardware.

This is pretty much the same thing. Just think of it as a different flavor of windows. Kind of like how the Dreamcast ran Windows CE.

It's the ultimate solution to the RRoD problem, give up and let some actual hardware guys have a crack at it!

I'd probably be more likely to buy a Dell or Toshiba Xbox 360 than a Microsoft-engineered one.

Counting Rupees: Bust Blox

Jun 20th 2008 9:34AM (Joystiq)
This game is going to make a killing come the holidays. Kids are finally getting their Wiis, and this Xmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa parents are going to go out looking for a nice, non-threatening game, that looks pretty, and they're going to get BoomBlox. EA should probably do another round of ads starting in November, but I doubt they'll even need to do that.

Sure, just release an external hard drive and all will be forgiven!

Mario Super Sluggers features new characters, super moves

Jun 11th 2008 11:42AM (Joystiq)
It's simple, actually. Real baseball is hard and boring. VERY BORING. To jazz it up and make it actually fun to play or watch you've got to add flaming rainbows and glittering ponies and crazy stuff. And if you're adding crazy stuff, you might as well use characters people know and love. I'll gladly buy a whole new round of "Mario (Blank)" every hardware cycle, because the games are always polished and fun. Mario Tennis was about a thousand times more fun than Top Spin. If you want a sim-style sports game, ask a third party.

Mario and the citizens are the Mushroom Kingdom are the Bugs Bunny/Mickey Mouse/Woody Woodpecker of our age. Simple as that.

Nielsen: Wii usage is second to Xbox 360

Maybe I was a little harsh. Indeed, I too know (well, more like knew) people who make plenty of money and put hours on end into games. I've lost friends who instead of going out to dinner/movies/golfing/etc put in 8 hours at their job, come home, put in 7-8 hours on WoW, sleep for 5 hours, then wake up and do it all over again. Sure, they make good money, but they would gladly trade their life in for a pod in the Matrix were one to become available. That's just not for me.

Maybe I just sleep too much. I have a nice job, (I'm posting to Joystiq on the clock, for instance) and only work 8 hours a day. I live close to work so I spend less than 30 minutes a day commuting, but when I come home, spend time with the wife and family, listen to how everyone's day was, help with dinner and cleaning up, pay some bills, check my email, and do the other things like that I can maybe work in 30 minutes or so of gaming at night before my body is telling me it's time for bed.

I guess that 2+ hours a day, every day seems like an awful lot. That's more than one full day at work every week! It just doesn't seem like it would leave a lot of time for other activities, that's all. I mean, I can't imagine devoting to ANY hobby.

And I'm not saying that I don't game in stretches longer than that, (I probably put in 30 hours the first weekend I had RE4) but this data says the "average" gamer does that 28 freaking days a month!

I guess maybe I am being crotchety. Still boggles my mind, though.

And NATO_Duke, are you with a firm or a sole practitioner? How long have you been practicing? I passed the bar last year but have primarily been doing SP work on the side while I keep my old job. But everyone I used to hang out with in law school is getting crushed for time. The firm/municipal lawyers I know all put in 60+ hours a week and my sole practitioner buddies are even worse with trying to establish their practices. I'm the only one of our old gaming circle that games AT ALL anymore...

Nielsen: Wii usage is second to Xbox 360

Am I reading this wrong, or is it saying that the average Xbox 360 owner puts in more than two hour+ gaming sessions A DAY?!?!

Dear god, even when I was a wee lad with nothing to do in the summer but play video games I think my butt would be grafted to the couch putting in hours like that. And if by "average" they mean "Mean" then there are people who put way more than that in...

Well, after playing Halo3/MarioKart/Etc on-line, I guess I have no problem imagining there are plenty of people who put 4 hours a day every day into playing a video game. As much as I love video games, that just seems that you're missing out on actually living your life at that point...

You show me a 27-year old who plays 2 hours of Xbox a day, and I'll show you someone who'll make less than $9 an hour their entire life. (Game developers and joystiq bloggers exempted, of course!)

Age of Conan's incredible shrinking breasts

Jun 4th 2008 9:12AM (Joystiq)
If the big selling point for AoC is realism, they I don't see why they would want comically large WoW style breasts in the first place. I think the second picture is much more appropriate.

Oooh, that's right. Gamers.

PETA's fur-hating, law-skirting, super-cute animal game

Mar 28th 2008 9:23AM (Joystiq)
They mean PETA's "I'd rather go naked than wear fur" advertising campaign, which features naked women.

Or at least I assume that's what xGabrielx means.
