The Joystiq Show - 028: Street Fighter X Jenova

Mar 19th 2012 3:30PM (Joystiq)
@silasthemariner Agreed. Must more entertaining / interesting than the 'news' which has way too much sarcasm and schadenfreude (that one's for you Xander!)

Contrasting the intelligent questions here with a certain other podcast I've listened to recently that featured interviews with many GDC attendees only highlights the ridiculous questions devs get asked at the level of 'So, do you think developing games is hard?'

The Joystiq Show - 026: Alan Wake's American Newsmare

Feb 27th 2012 1:54PM (Joystiq)
@(Unverified) That's precisely why people need to read the review and not just look at the score. If Richard or Dave or anyone else on Joystiq or any other outlet reviews a game and summarizes with 'you need to experience this game' then you as a reader have to not only interpret that review keeping in mind the reviewer, but also the text of the review. If the game doesn't look interesting or worth your time and the review confirms that or doesn't change that then don't play the game.

Game prices fluctuate too much to take into account these days. I agree game length matters, but it's only one piece of information I look at when deciding whether or not to play a game. I may have 3 or 4 games that I've decided I would like to play, I then have to look at prices, game length, and also 'whatever I'm in the mood for'. It's so subjective which is why people shouldn't get so riled up over the score or number of stars a game gets.

Also, just do your job and review the game like you're supposed to!

The Joystiq Show - 024: Kingdoms of Double Fine

Enjoyed the podcast.
I like the review roundtable format since it gives the listener multiple perspectives on the game. I don't necessarily go to two or three other sites and read their full reviews so incorporating their views into Joystiq's provides a more well-rounded view on the game.
Having other reviewers on who gave the game a different score and review than Richard reminds us that Richard isn't against hearing other perhaps dissenting opinions on a game which is obvious, but can be easy to forget so thanks Richard!

Final Fantasy XIII-2 review: Fixing the past

Jan 29th 2012 12:36PM (Joystiq)
@RichardMitchell I guess the point is it would have been ideal had Griffin reviewed this game so we have some consistency in interpreting the score based on the review system. Obviously that's not going to happen so perhaps Jason could have mentioned what score he would have given XIII.
It's interesting that this specific situation is a good example of having an overly general scoring system breaks down. We read the reviews, but the distinct opinion of the reviewer is conflicted with the "general advice" of the scoring system when Griffin liked XIII enough to tell me I'd want to play it if "I like that kind of game at all" and Jason's review is telling me to play it "only if I like this type of game and can forgive some problems" while also insinuating he thinks this is a better game than XIII.
Like I said the issue could have been mitigated if Jason was more specific in contextualizing his opinion of XIII somewhere in this review.

The Joystiq Show - 021: SOPAJuice

Hey Alexander,
I'm in Canada and based on my IP, videos from sites like The Daily Show, Colbert Report, and Hulu throw up an error saying the video is not available in my region. I guess that's what Ubi wanted you guys to do with that EU only media.

I don't necessarily agree with them and I do find it a bit ridiculous, but getting around an IP block is a lot tougher than the theoretical 'nationality-gate'. Just lettin' you know the tech exists.

Enjoy the show, keep up the good work, and "What's frappenin' guys?!"

Best of the Rest: Jordan's picks for 2011

Jan 5th 2012 8:25PM (Joystiq)
Disclosure: Haven't played it. This game has been spoiled for me though so I thought I'd pose a question that has been brought up elsewhere: Doesn't the ending invalidate the entire story in terms of the choices you make and the investment you have in Vincent? It seems like it would have been a huge letdown / copout for me. Interesting to hear Jordan talk about how amazing the ending was after having heard another podcaster express his huge disappointment in it.

This is a goodbye post

Dec 27th 2011 2:51PM (Joystiq)
I don't remember exactly when I started reading Joystiq. It was probably a link from Engadget about 3 year sago. Since then Joystiq has been my primary gaming news website. I visit it almost every day. I've listened to all the original and new Joystiq and 360 podcasts. Hell I even listened to the JPAG casts. Most of my friends list is made up of JPAGers. What I'm saying is that Joystiq has influenced my gaming life more than I probably know and I have to think some of reason why is because of Chris Grant.
Thanks Chris.
