The Soapbox: Polished vs. feature-rich

Jul 6th 2011 4:42AM (Massively)
I'm an off and on EVE player. I think it's awesome that CCP wants to take EVE beyond spaceships, but in the meantime, development of the in-space portion of the game seems to have ground almost to a halt. Without some sort of time frame or clear vision for what non-spaceship EVE gameplay will look like, it's understandable that EVE vets are having a hard time embracing the awkward, half-baked, fluff/MT-centric Incarna expansion and are skeptical that it will lead to anything worthwhile. CCP has a history of developing promising new mechanics/systems and then essentially abandoning them.

9 Million smoking the Warcraft pipe

Jul 25th 2007 2:10AM (Joystiq)
You refuse to EVER play a game because of overtly crude and exaggerated parody of some of the people who play the game? That's pretty silly. The actual gameplay of WoW isn't even very accurately portrayed, as should be clear from the fact that the whole plot revolves around bringing down a single uber-powerful high-level griefer that even the game developers are powerless to kill/ban/suspend.

Also, there aren't 9 million WoW addicts. Not even close. A lot of people who play WoW do so compulsively, sure, some to the extent where it starts to take over their life and they could be fairly called "junkies," but by no means is that the case for every player or even most players. Also, as it's been pointed out, this 9 million figure may or may not include trial accounts, canceled subscriptions, people who don't play very often (when I had a WoW subscription, there were spans where I hardly played at all) and you have to remember that 9 million accounts doesn't necessarily mean 9 million PEOPLE. A lot of the really hardcore players have multiple accounts. On the flipside, some people probably share accounts (some families, many gold farmers) but those people almost certainly aren't addicts.

I really don't see the point in such cavalier negative stereotyping.

Dawkins' Message to Mourners--Get Over It!

Apr 20th 2007 7:33AM (News Bloggers)
Dinesh, you owe atheists in general and Professor Dawkins specifically a sincere apology for your words. Most of all, you should apologize to the friends and families of the victims of the Virginia Tech massacre.

You owe atheists an apology for characterizing us as uncaring wretches with no humanity. Do you think we don't know what it is like to suffer loss? Do you truly believe that we lack the capacity for pity, or a desire and ability to help others with their grief? Because this is the ugly, hateful message you are conveying.

You should apologize to Richard Dawkins for your blatantly and shamelessly misleading headline and taking statements made about "god" and "the universe" and applying them to PEOPLE.

You owe everyone who is grieving for the victims an apology for your complete lack of tact and consideration in exploiting this tragedy to spew your bigoted nonsense against atheists.

In the meantime, don't worry, I won't be holding my breath.

Geek, nerd, or dork?

Agreed, geek and nerd are switched.

Analyst: Sony shakeup means no PS4 [update 1]

Dec 1st 2006 8:10PM (Joystiq)
"Come on man. When Microsoft turns up the heat and drops the Xbox 360 Core System to $249 and the Premium system to $349, who would buy a Wii for $249??? If Sony drops out ole Billy Gates will own us all. (More than he already does!!)"

By that time, I suspect the question is more likely to be, "Who would by a Wii for $149?" or possibly "Who would buy a Wii plus an extra controller/nunchuk for $199" or "Who would buy a Wii with Super Mario Galaxy or Twilight Princess or Metroid Prime Corruption bundled for $199?"

Analyst: Sony shakeup means no PS4 [update 1]

Dec 1st 2006 8:05PM (Joystiq)
I'm not back-reading all of the comments, so this sentiment has probably be expressed a few times already, but though I would be somewhat pleased to see the Playstation 3 fall flat on its face, I hope it isn't their last console.

Rather, I hope the PS3 continues to do poorly in the market, but well enough that Sony doesn't ditch plans for a PS4 entirely. Instead, I hope they examine what they did wrong with the PS3 (not listening to customers, force-feeding us unwanted, expensive technology, poor support out of the gate for developers, inability to produce enough consoles at launch to satisfy even the relatively small number of early adopters, failure to innovate beyond the guts of their microchips, etc.)

If Sony could just be taught a lesson in humility, I'm sure they could supply us with some truly amazing products.

11,500 Final Fantasy XI accounts banned

Nov 28th 2006 4:16PM (Joystiq)
"I wonder how many of those banned for bypassing "game mechanics" were simply using windowers to avoid logging out of the game to check a game guide or chat applets."

Good question. Hopefully none, but who knows? I know this is one of the things that contributed to my decision to ultimately stop playing FF11. I couldn't get any of the windowers to work properly and I refused to let a game monopolize my PC in the way that Square-Enix tries to mandate.

WSJ concerned about Wii owner health

Nov 26th 2006 1:37AM (Joystiq)
"im confused about the buzz around the internet here. Everyone says the wii is a workout machine, but I lie down on a bed and barely move my wrist and it gets the full motions needed. How could anyone break a weat like this? Tennis, bowling and all that require no more movement then writing with a pen."

Really? When I try playing Tennis or Bowling from the chair my performance suffers pretty significantly, I've noticed. Games like Zelda, standing up seems to make little or no difference, but in games like Tennis and Bowling I find that using full, natural motions helps me with my timing and such.

Wii Sports: Training and Fitness

Nov 12th 2006 3:31PM (Joystiq)
It sounds more like a test of your skill at Wii Sports than a measure of your actual level of fitness (or a workout to improve your fitness). Seems kind of worthless ... maybe a novel way of keeping track of your overall skill at the game, but that's about it. I doubt I'll bother with it, unless somehow the games get more physically demanding as you unlock them.

What the 2006 midterm means for gamers

Nov 10th 2006 11:50AM (Joystiq)
otakucode: Perfectly said. You summed it up right there.

WatTsu: While there may not be any "pro-games" politicians and I wouldn't expect there to be (well, until the video game industry starts lobbying harder than it has been), I do expect there to be PRO-FREE SPEECH politicians.

What's unfortunate is that upholding the Constitution doesn't seem to be a very popular political stance anymore. I'm afraid that one of these days they'll edit the first amendment to read "THINK OF THE CHILDREN!" I'm sure that would win the vote of every soccer mom in the country.
