@beardly: The xbox 360 controller can only be tethered to one machine at a time. The button on the top allows the receiver to scan for new controllers. There is a corresponding button on the controller. When the two buttons are pressed on each device, the xbox 360 or pc receiver will scan for new devices and attach it to that machine.

It would be almost impossible to make every XBOX 1 title compatible with the 360, at least with the hardware implementation that MS chose to go with.
