From Page to Screen: 'The Ruins'

Aug 6th 2008 2:54PM (Cinematical)
See, my biggest complaint about the film was the fact that it didn't explore the concept enough. For instance, the big issue I took out of the theatre was that the movie managed to make it clear to me that the Mayans were quarantining the tourists for a reason, not because they were evil. That changed the typical relationship between viewer and hapless horror movie character. I don't mean the kind of relationship you have with the glorified extras in a Jason movie or whatnot, those bodies are pretty much on film to be slaughtered.

Rather I mean how we often find ourselves empathizing and identifying with those in danger, hoping for their survival against the odds. In The Ruins I was left with mixed feelings, not wishing the characters ill, but knowing that their survival would not be a good thing. That was, I felt, the strongest aspect of the film, and was left completely untouched by the ending. It was not merely left open for a sequel, it was hinted at throughout the movie, it was very much an element of this film, and yet it was completely untouched by the ending. I'll agree that a 90 minute film doesn't have the room to explore a concept as much as a 500 page book, but that doesn't excuse it from leaving loose ends in that manner.

In any case, the movie had its issues besides that, but I figured I'd rant a little bit since this topic gave me an in. I fully intend to go out and read the book now, you've piqued my interest. I'm wary, though, since you also said that you actually enjoyed The Strangers, which came closer to making me walk out than any film I've ever seen before. I read on this site once that the only thing redeemable about that film was that one shot from the trailer, and whoever wrote that got it completely right. I'll take the gore-less glory that was Funny Games over that train wreck any day.

'Max Payne' Gets a Dark Trailer!

It actually looks like it could be a somewhat promising adaptation... Faithful, right down to the bullet-time dive... Though what the hell is with all those angels? They pull someone out a window and are apparently in the subway system...? Weird...

Are These The 10 Most Depressing Movie Endings Ever?

Apr 9th 2008 2:52PM (Cinematical)
Completely agreed, the fact that Requiem or a dream isn't on this list is ridiculous. when I walked out of The Mist I remember thinking, among many other things, that the only movie that had made me feel so depressed up until that point had been Requiem. Also I always found the ending of The Elephant Man to be quite a bit more ambiguous, and I didn't actually consider it depressing at all. It wasn't exactly uplifting, and I disagree with the philosophy of life it proposed, but I never found it depressing.

StarCraft 2's Zerg finally revealed

Mar 10th 2008 2:06PM (Joystiq)
Haha, yes Sugar Daddy, it was definitely meant to be sarcastic (I own a Wii). I know full well that Blizzard wont do anything half-assed, but I am underwhelmed by the look of the game. I understand the reasons they've chosen this route, but I was hoping for more of a substantial evolution than a throwback/update.

It'll be good, but it wont have the magic I remember from when the first one came out, or when Diablo came out. Even Diablo 2 was a significant move beyond its predecessor. With this I just don't see it yet.

Wii Warm Up: Gaming marathons

I remember when the Dreamcast first came out, my buddy got it and Sonic Adventure at launch. We stayed up all night beating the game with numerous characters and then sent someone out to buy a VMU when stores opened so we could actually save our progress. Up till that point we'd all been strictly cartridge system owners, so the concept of buying memory eluded us until we were already well into the game.

Forty-eight hours of Zelda

The post omits the important fact that these guys are taking donations and giving the money they make to Child's Play. They've already raised a few hundred dollars. It's a good cause, a fun time for these guys and a funny video to tune into for a while to watch. Good luck to them for finding a good way to waste time and have fun while raising money for children

The Ten Worst Films of 2007 -- James's Take

Jan 1st 2008 12:25PM (Cinematical)
I can't agree more with your list James (or at least with the films on it I've seen. I was lucky enough to avoid most of them). With regards to 300, tedium is the perfect word. Frank Miller IS criminally overrated, and the only upside of seeing his story put on film was knowing its success bankrolled Watchmen. Even that, though, was tarnished by the fact that Zack Snyder, while not a terrible director per se, has no sense of characterization/development, which Watchmen kinda sorta hinges on.

Into The Wild was a fantastic story that Sean Penn managed to tarnish with his lack of directorial style. He should have saved everyone the trouble and just directed an episode of The Real World instead.

Transformers was an incredibly stupid film that actually managed to be worse than I expected from Michael Bay. I'm honestly surprised that there are people reading this site that enjoyed "Xformers," mostly by the fact that they read. To all of you who claim that "there is a generation gap between yourself and the majority of moviegoers," I would like you to sit and think about just about every single line any of the Transformers actually said, particularly anything uttered by Jazz. The natural reaction is far from all encompassing of my disappointment with the film, but certainly demonstrates it effectively.
