Rock Band Weekly: Ozzy Osbourne six-pack

Jun 9th 2010 12:40PM (Joystiq)
Really? They're synching up Ozzy songs with his new albums? His albums have been tanking for well over a decade, he's pretty much all washed up at this point.

If they're really doing this for Ozzy, they had better do something for Maiden's new album in August, since they still actually sell CD's and sell out gigantic concerts and still actually have musical talent left.

But then again, Maiden wouldn't really need the publicity stunt of putting their new album on Rock Band, since people already know to buy their CD's.

Review: The Beatles: Rock Band

Sep 7th 2009 9:05PM (Joystiq)
I really have to say, this is the most intelligent post I've seen so far.

Of course, I'll get voted down and have people come up with all sorts of assinine reasons why it isn't (usually just coming to the conclusion that it's rock band so it's better), but I completely agree with what you say and think the people that vote you down have their heads too far up their asses.

Here's what Rock Band did, they took GH's idea of making a game based on a musical group, but unlike Metallica, it's entirely that one group, so if you don't like them, there's absolutely no reason to buy the game. They added harmonizing vocals, which doesn't really change gameplay at all, it just means 2 more people can sing at once. Other than that, the game is exactly the same as any other Rock Band games as far as gameplay goes. GH:Metallica changed gameplay more when they added double-bass pedals into the mix, that way, you're actually playing differently, rather than just more people playing at once. In fact, this can be thought of as a step down for gameplay because the songs are so easy that this is basically the easiest GH or RB game ever made. But they worked hard to make the game look pretty and look very reminiscent of the Beatles.

GH5 is basically the same GH game as we've played before, but now multiple people can play at once on all instruments (so already, they've beaten RB:Beatles as far as gameplay changes go), but on top of that, people can join in or leave at any time, and there are new modes to play on where the difficulty changes or you have to do certain parts perfectly and what not. Nothing groundbreaking, but definitely a decent attempt to make the game series seem more refreshed and a little new.

If you ask me, adding gameplay features, even if they are that small, is doing a lot more to further the plastic instrument rhythm game series a lot more than making the game look a lot prettier, while in turn making it the least challenging game that's been released in the series. To a person with common sense, people should be more excited, concerned, or just have a little bit more care for the game that is challenging and offers a handful of new gameplay mechanics, rather than a simplified version of the same game we've been playing, only it looks prettier.

Unfortunately, it's joystiq, and it's no longer a site for "gamers with a high IQ" or whatever their tagline used to be. RB: Beatles is more hyped just because its a beatles game, which causes most people, the workers at joystiq included, to forget about the fact that it's just a dumbed-down, prettier-looking version of the game they've been playing for years while GH5 is actually changing things up a bit.

Not saying either game is better, but if you can manage to overcome fanboyism, you'll notice that giving RB:Beatles this much attention and praise isn't completely fair.

Review: The Beatles: Rock Band

How could you possibly not think this is just another one of the same games with different songs? You do the literal exact same thing as the other songs, just the presentation is better and a few non-gameplay aspects are polished. It's the same game, it just looks prettier and has bonus photos of the band!

I can't believe it's actually gotten to the point where people are reviewing these games based on the little levels of graphical polish they have and the pictures and fun facts they include about the band.

Rock Band: Country Track Pack debuts 13 new songs for franchise

God, what a waste of time spent making all of those charts. Everyone knows Country music fans don't have electricity, let alone rock band.

Bring on some more Dream Theater or some Queensryche or Led Zeppelin.

Rumor: Natal part of new Xbox console, due Fall 2010

Jun 13th 2009 10:58AM (Joystiq)
I really don't think they'd be that anxious to jump the gun again with a new console. Especially when they didn't even mention the possibility of a new system any time soon at E3. It'd be understandable that Natal comes standard with all of their next gen consoles, but I doubt tthey're going to be bringing out a new one 5 years after the 360 and 4 years after the competition. The only reason they jumped the gun in this generation was to get a head start because they were in dead last, but now they're in first in the hardcore and multimedia race, and second in mainstream appeal.
