May 17th 2006 4:51PM (Joystiq)microsoft takes proven game types and pushes them to the limit. halo/halo2 is just a first person shooter. it's a great first person shooter, one of the best ever, but it's not revolutionary in terms of new game types. you could do more stuff in "tribes 1" for the PC in 1999, like use jetpacks.
i didn't get a PS2 until i got one for christmas in 2002, when the price was $199, down 50% from it's debeut price. i didn't get an xbox until 2004, when the price hit $149 and i knew i could mod it. mostly what i do with it is play emulators, movie files, and pics with xbox media center. i got an xbox as an afterthought cuz i wanted a media center thing in my living room. i am thinking of picking up a PSP for the same uses, only on the go.
my point in all of this is that the new consoles aren't designed for hardcore gamers. they are designed for guys like me. they already know you guys will buy them when they come out... you are going to pay top price for them when they first come out, and finance the second and possibly the third wave for guys like me.
in two christmases, when the rest of america has seen the new consoles in the homes of people like you guys, and the prices are down 25%-50%, they will want to replace the home entertainment center with a networked thing that does plays movies, gets online, and plays games. at that time, all the shit that's built into these consoles will pay off.
i wouldn't be surprised if a PVR addon and some other entertainment stuff doesn't find it's way to these consoles as well in the coming years.
