He should be entitled to the replacement cost of the equipment, period.
If you have a special, custom xbox console, don't travel with it. Get a "travel unit" and carry on your hard disk. Problem solved.

The point isn't the inability to get a refund, but there's no way in the store to even SEE the product. You can't have it both ways. Unless you are Microsoft, of course.

Nice for the community that a third-party has made the effort to do what MS should be doing, though. Wake up, Microsoft.
