Judge orders 7 Studios to release Scratch source code

May 8th 2009 8:22PM (Joystiq)
Putting lipstick on a pig still makes it a pig. Ripping out all that is essential to mixing/scratching/dj-ing and throwing in a cheap plastic "turntable" is cheap/cheesy/lazy. So you don't want to learn to actually dj. Thats all well and good and by all means buy the game. Thats not the juxtaposition of my argument at all. Read the first paragraph. The points below it merely adds to my argument.

1.) If the point of the game is not to replicate anything then riddle me why the use of a "turntable" in a game about, I'm sure you could come up with a controller method that used the Wii Nunchucks or the analog control sticks. GH actually replicates playing a guitar fairly well in a much more visceral way then air guitar even could do. You use the same muscle types and general control. Yes the micro-tactile feeling of putting together open, Barre, or power chords isn't the same but for a game it doesn't have to be. In this game you have what is essentially an arcade joystick where you hold down buttons and move the "turntable" back and forth. There is nothing to draw an individual in.

2.) Replication is key to drawing in an individual. Why else the push every four to six years for better graphics. Do a search online and you will find a gratuitous amount of hardware that connects to a computer or console that enhances the experience of playing the game even further (by adding scents, or a jacket that has you "feel" when you get hit in an FPS, or 3d goggles, or add-on physics cards, good old plans for a cockpit simulator, etc.). What makes the Gibson GH controller better then the new Fender knock off. The Gibson is modeled after a real guitar making your game experience seem that much less fake.

Lastly my comment was in regards to the fighting between corporations and how nonsensical it seems to be fighting over what will be at best a fad or mostly likely another corporate attempt to get at the urban demographics cash through a badly researched and implemented gimmick. How many more Devon's Ultimate Learn How to Dance Tapes are going to fill the landfills? Only you can prevent your friends from buying a copy of "Ninja Rap"...oh and the only real moral stance I took was in a proverbial rolling of the eyes at the fanboy hatred of Activision.

Really they are fighting over this tired concept. This is grilled cheese with mozzarella baked within the bread. This is macaroni with sharp cheddar, monterrey jack, and bleu cheese.

This doesn't even come close to replicating the feel of actually scratching or dj-ing. As a long time DJ with a record collection that spans 60s Rock to modern Rap half of the fun is in music selection and bringing two unlikely songs together (thus the need for two turntables). It isn't just about pushing a record against the needle (or the laser head in modern equipment) like some prepubescent ADHD nerded out on the newly discovered ability to ruin perfectly good wax.

The reason guitar hero worked was it made you feel like you were playing guitar. It was DDR but mashed with air guitar. This game guts the experience of dj-ing so much I find it hard to believe that people will stick with this past a few days or a week at tops (when the novelty has run its course). Not to mention the plethora of good and bad music games that has already flooded the market I think both companies are making much ado about nothing. Four or five years ago had this came out AT the same time as GH then yes maybe (big maybe though) it may have been hip-hops answer to GH.

I actually had high hopes for this game but have been let down at every step. Oh and all the Activision hate blah blah blah, they are both trying to make money off this its not like Scratch has told us all they plan on only selling the game at production costs. They both see it as a potential cash cow and a link into the lucrative world of hip-hop.

Rumor: BioShock 2 to feature multiplayer

MP well it really doesn't matter my nerd-whining about destroying the integrity of the single player game for inclusion of a hastily tacked on MP aspect that does nothing to bring in the game further into the Rapture universe. So I will just say WAAAAAAAAAAA I am pissed about MP. Seriously I am very annoyed about this but do realize I am whining over a game....
