Banned cheaters grovel before Bungie

May 25th 2006 2:45AM (Joystiq)
I really love the (pardon my language) dumbass who tried to pretend he was a lawyer. Listen kids, if you're going to try and punk out Bungie that way, make sure everything is correct (both spelling and grammar). Also, I wouldn't be surprised to see Bungie fight back in court, and win. Rules are rules, and no matter how many different ways you look at it, what you did was still cheating.

I would love to see the look on the people's faces when they pop in Halo 3 and realize they're still banned. So sick of those cheaters who openly admit to it over the headset, and then beg Bungie to take them back. You're not cool. You're not 733t. You're just some preteen who got busted for something that's ignorant to begin with.

I'd also like to interview the very first person to get banned from Halo 3 multiplayer. I'd probably rub it in until he/she got mad. Then I'd probably say something along the lines of "Okay well I don't like your attitude. I'm going to go play Halo 3 multiplayer now.

Blu-ray is very important for gamers

May 24th 2006 9:49PM (Joystiq Playstation)
"What if I had said no? ;)"

I asked anyway, didn't I? lol

"That's why I said Blu-ray is necessary, because I believe we (and developers) *should* use it, not necessarily for hollywood products, but for gaming. Above I explained how could we (and developers) would benefit from it."

I just don't understand why we need the player (for movie content) as a standard. What if I don't want it? What if most gamers don't want it (not saying that'll happen, but right now that seems to be the general consensus.

"So why don't they *save* to explore some more on it? Every cent counts, especially for investors."

Because there's two other consoles. So in other words, they don't have to, because they don't have to make PS3 games (which is apparent by the strong showing Microsoft had in terms of third-party titles at E3). Exclusive deals are fading away fast.

"How about Lair? Or FFXIII? MGS4? I consider these three titles better (graphically speaking) than Gears of War (that doesn't mean Gears of War isn't impressive). These are the exclusive titles I was talking about. That's why I've been saying that cross-platform games will look the same, if not better on 360 (better development tools, less time wasted on "exploring" the Cell)."

I think we'll be seeing two of the three you listed become ports for the Xbox 360 in a matter of years. Mainly MGS4, considering Kojima continues to talk about how MGS4 could fit on the 360's format. Final Fantasy games have begun being ported to Microsoft consoles, and I don't think it'll stop. That leaves Lair. Yeah, I will admit it looks damn good. I wouldn't put it over the beauty of PGR3, but I'd definitely put it on the same level.

"What do you mean by "some of the motions don't mach the menu screen"? You mean it is all pre-fabricated? Well, that could be... but the shots do look credible. I mean, it's no *killzone*. Square even said that's the "White engine" they've been working on for some time... besides, I do believe FFXIII could have been in development for quite some time now, even if FFXII isn't out (after all, it isn't out because it was delayed). The same thing happened with FFVII and look how quick FFVIII, FFIX and FFX came out (FFVII was delayed several times). Then again, you *might* be right, but that's yet to be seen. Again, games are not only about graphics, are about the size of their worlds, the amount of content you see."

No one is denying that size is always a big factor with FF titles. However, that still has nothing to do with what I said. I never said anything about the size of the worlds, or whether or not what I THINK the trailer was--was pre-rendered. I'm just saying, It's not that hard to make it appear to be in-game, and have it not be. I'm just one of those people that likes to get their hands on a game so I can be reassured that it's not bogus. Besides, in the end it'll sell. It's Final Fantasy. It's going to blow up big in Japan and North America regardless of what that video was.

"Nintendo said the same thing about CDs back in the 64 era, and Sega said the same thing about DVD. So who knows? I also thought DVD games were going to be more expensive than CD games, but you know what happened."

I think Sony and Nintendo have opposite problems that both lead/may lead to the demise of a console. Nintendo is very conservative. Apparently too conservative for their own good at times. Sony is outgoing. Yet again...too outgoing for their own good by the looks of things. It should be interesting.

"UMD is a different matter. Honestly, I don't even get why UMD got so many companies on board if it can only play on a PSP; Blu-ray movies will play on pretty much any blu-ray player, and I also heard that one side is DVD and another is Blu-ray, so you can play it anywhere. Who will want it at first? Videophiles. Who will want to buy it later? The same people that buy DVD now, but only if Blu-ray really comes down to the price of a DVD (or lower, which is possible; after all, it is a single coated disc, not double like DVD or HD-DVD). So if Blu-ray players come down (in a not so distant future) to a near DVD pricepount, and the same for Blu-ray movies, the mindset of people will be "I get more for the same price". That's a big IF though."

I agree. My one big worry for Sony is the movie industry. One major motion picture company called Blu-ray "Another Sony flop". I understand that's only ONE company, but what happens if more companies start to say that? The problem with people obsessed with the latest-and-greatest formats is that they're similar to "hardcore" gamers. They want the best-of-the-best in DVD playing quality. So they may (shouldn't, but probably will) go out and by the most-expensive, fully-loaded Blu-ray player on the market. It's stupid, but I've seen people do it. UMDs...well...yeah I think we all know to hold back our vulgar remarks right about now.

"If you are a hardcore gamer or a PlayStation fanboy, why not? If you have the money and really like games, why not? Or why not wait instead? PS2 has tons of life anyway, so by the time PS3 comes out, who knows if you'll be able to find one anyway. But FFXII, God hand and God of War 2 will be out for PS2, around the time PS3 comes out, or even a little later. So by the time you finished these three games, you might be able to find a PS3; maybe a few months later (for Sony's own sake, which makes business sense), by summer, PS3 will already be cheaper."

It'll have to be cheaper. The sad thing is that Sony predicts a $817+M loss. That's factoring in that their $500-$600 consoles won't slow down in sales. That's why launches are always bad indicators. All companys make JUST enough consoles that they think will feed the early-adopters, and that's it. Launches suck, and hopefully Sony will realize 'yeah we're taking an even bigger cut in the short-run, but people might buy a $400 or a $500 console'. I won't post your following paragraph simply because this last part pretty much answers what I thought of it.

"And some people will want a PS3 and a Wii. Some people will also think "I get an Xbox 360, a Wii and then some if I buy a PS3, all in one machine". It's not like everyone is going to buy two machines; only hardcore gamers. Also, if people only wanted things for price, they would get a Wii, not a 360. Why get a 360 if they just care for Price when Wii is a lot cheaper?"

The assumption that the PS3 can do what the other two can do (combined) boggles my mind. The motion sensing in the PS3 controller is a joke. Everyone laughed at Microsoft when they did it, and I'm pretty sure no one really cared that the Saturn controller had it. Besides, that thing is going to get confusing. Nintendo's stance on it was that it makes it less complicated for everyone. Ok I understand having an analog stick and a D-pad even with the motion sensing. Understanable. But TWO analog sticks? That, along with the continued shape, size, and number of buttons on the PS3 controller just furthers the complications. Besides, from what developers are saying, most of their games won't feature the motion sensing because Sony added it only weeks prior to E3. As far as the Xbox 360 goes, it has something the PS3 doesn't. More games. People seem to forget about WHY Sony's PS2 was so dominant. Forget the Dreamcast theory. How about the PS2 theory. Sony seems to have adopted the Microsoft theory (spend absurd amounts of money and expect a ridiculous loss of money).

I think at the end of the day, Sony needs to try harder. What they've said can't be undone right away (if at all). So what they should probably do (IMO) is aggressive advertising. If they can't by MORE aggressive than the competition (being AS aggressive isn't going to result in anything good), then they're looking at a long road ahead.

Blu-ray is very important for gamers

May 24th 2006 4:50PM (Joystiq Playstation)
Hey boots, can I ask you something? Wouldn't it make more sense to make the DVD player optional? I mean people seem to be knocking Microsoft for it, but think about it. Gamers who just want to play games do NOT have to fork out an additional $100 for something they're never going to use. I'd rather have the option to take it or leave it (IMO).

Also, game developers don't save money. They have to blow more money trying to figure out how to even work with the cell. In case anyone missed it, I urge you to go check out the E3 videos at G4TV.com. Many developers at E3 have been saying that they don't even want to waste their time. I understand that, considering nothing they have shown can really top the Xbox 360.

I can prove that too. First off, slapping a menu screen (that many people, such as Morgan Webb and Adam Sessler were quick to point out) on a pre-rendered video isn't hard, and some of the motions (from FFXIII) don't match the menu screen.

And can we all stop with the "MGS4 looks better than any Xbox 360 game". I'm not anti-anyone, but come on. Hideo Kojima, the man himself, said that MGS4 could run on an Xbox 360 console just as smoothly as it does on a PlayStation 3.

I could understand Blu-ray in the following generation, but not this upcoming one. Hirai likes to boast the number of major motion picture companies that have agreed to Blu-ray, but can we really trust him? He (as well as other Sony execs.) said that nearly all companies were on-board with UMD movies. I think Blu-ray is a cool concept, but people simply can't afford it. People aren't buying HD-DVD movies either. If you already have a DVD player, then for most families, it doesn't matter. HD hasn't hit it big just yet.

My big problem is how Sony has gone about hyping this. They spent all this time saying Blu-ray is great for movies, and that the PS3 has a Blu-ray player in it. Yes, they're right. It is a cheap Blu-ray player. HOWEVER, its absurd that they say its a cheap Blu-ray player, and then turn around and say 'Come buy our GAMING machine'. I want to play games. That's it. I got my DVD player when I bought a PS2. That gimmick has been over for years.

As far as what I've seen, Sony is going to get hurt, big time. Not necessarily just from the price either. Game developers are already shying away from it (Kojima says its possible to port MGS4, and he's making a Wii title [as well as sticking Snake in S.S.B.B.]). Now add on the fact that many consumers are already turning away due to the price. I think that will further the issue of losing developer support. They're slipping in Japan (they'll never place 3rd in their home country), and Australia/New Zealand, North America, and Europe are definitely pretty pissed off with the price.

It probably doesn't help that both Nintendo and Microsoft have gone on record stating that you get more bang for your buck if you just pay $600 for a fully-loaded Xbox 360, and a Wii.

PS3 dominates Japanese mind

May 18th 2006 12:31PM (Joystiq Playstation)
Lol. I think that was the point, Boots. He spent, what, a couple words on you, and you completely blew-up. And I looked, and I he never said anything about Cage and that Ganja dude. Maybe that's why he called it shit. And just like he said...it doesn't matter what you say about him, because that has nothing to do with your credibility being shit.

I also don't think he's feeling too threatened, if that's what you're going for. I mean, he did leave his website on his name. Maybe he thought you were important, and wanted to say something about it on his page.
