So if Microsoft runs out of 90nm boards to replace units with then they'll just start shipping out 65nm boards instead. Its not like Microsoft has stopped manufacturing Xbox360 boards.
The comments about the heat sink design is really no shocker either. Anyone that's looked at the original heat sink assembly and then looked at a PC video card of similar vintage would say that the Xbox360 is under cooled.
Wouldn't surprise me at all if it was all true. In either case, Microsoft did have to eat a very large bill in the end, which should deter them from making a similar mistake again in the future.
I personally know of 7 xbox 360's including my own. All of various vintage (mine being the oldest... I want some a commission or something!) and all are working just fine.
I can't say the same about the other owners I know from the online communities and clans I'm in. Without taking a survey I'd peg the number of failed units from that sample at around 10%-20%. It does seem that those that have failures have multiple failures which could point out a problem with the repair process which has been evolving as time goes on.
I've got a 95055 box which had a 95065 guitar in it and I have a second guitar that was both 95065 on the box and the guitar itself. Both seem to work just fine. Mind you I have no idea how they compare to ps2 guitars as far as star power, but my wife and I don't seem to have a problem with it. YMMV
