Hey man, I'm all for interesting things on Joystiq, it's just my opinion that this article simply isn't interesting. I'm sorry I don't find value in your pet story.
I guess I should have thought about the wording of my first post more carefully. I'm quite aware that Joystiq is not a "news site" in the traditional sense. However, what I meant to say was that this idea has been around for a long time, and discussed to no end. This summary of a discussion really didn't provide any insight or new concept that isn't a part of the standard discussion of computers simulating reality.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the ideas aren't interesting, I just don't see the value of this article.
Lastly, I didn't mean to offend or anger anyone, and I assure you, I'm quite chill. =p
Well, it's good to know that the ideas presented by sci-fi writers over 50 years ago are still considered news. No offense to the content, which is certainly interesting on its own merit, but how is this really classified as news?
Either way, it's still worth remembering that as a simulation gets closer and closer to reality, the small differences make it more and more unbelievable. Considering we don't know how the universe works now, I think it'll be quite a while before we can accurately simulate it.
@6, Steve I just have to point out that Nick (#1) actually didn't want his 20 minutes back (you said 5). Guess it's a little easy to misread from time to time.
I loved the Atheist game, and the Buddhism one was a chuckle, however, for some reason the Christian one didn't seem to work properly (either that or I missed the joke big time).
I'm all for a suprise release, but it still seems unlikely. Then again, that would be big enough to qualify for this post (maybe too big). Maybe they'll say it comes out in 1 week, but won't give pricing details or anything like that. Wouldn't that be wierd.
@vidguy "All I saw was that the remote was confirmed to have 6KB available; then there was days of speculation about what it would be used for. Many expected it to be used for calibration and user settings, but a lot said it was too small."
I know cringer8 already confirmed this (hough I'd love to see a link to the interview), I would like to point out how much could be stored on 6Kb. Typically, 1 byte (1b) is equivalent to 1 character (one letter, number, or symbol that is). 6Kb would be more than enough to store a name, some controller settings, and even a small picture.
For example, goto: http://www.goyamen.com/Joystiq/6Kb.html Now, obviously the data I made up for this example isn't the same as what Nintendo will be storing, but everthing you see at that page, including the picture, adds up to a total of 3324b or 3.3Kb (appx. conversion, 1024b = 1KB). That's not encrypted or anything, but it does include the HTML data (which is about 30b).
The point is 6Kb is plenty of space to store user information.
Whew, I started reading this when it was at 250ish comments, and I finally got to the end about 3 hours later.
So, now that I'm going to be close to the 500th poster, let me pose a totally ridiculous idea:
The Wii remote controller will function as more than just a controller, it will also work as a personal MP3 player and data storage device. No, wait, that's dumb.
How about Microsoft deciding to support iTunes through XBL? No, that's also retarded.
Oh, I got it. Sony's gonna tell us that in an effort to build a communal experience, the PS3 will only play games online on Fridays!
When I moved up to Digipen, it was easier to go by 'Yamen' than my real name (which people always mispronounce, get corrected, then say "That's so unique, how did you get that name?" which gets really old). Even my professors called me Yamen. I made friends up here that didn't know my real name wasn't Yamen for several months at least.
