12 Days of Joyswag: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Collector's Edition (or: free dragons)

Migration. I will just sit on my sofa exploring instead of traveling in the real world.

PSA: Uncharted 3's multiplayer available at Subway

So it's not good enough to have sponsor money from a marquee title that's already getting plenty of attention. They still have the online pass to hassle and rob paying customers. Thanks Sony, for shoving that 5 dollar footlong up your customer's nether regions.

Uncharted 3 will use PSN Pass to combat piracy, make money on used games

@Hank Hill

Sorry dude. Just not that simple. Many enterprises exist to make a profit that don't rape their clientele. Is the banking industry allowed to steal and commit fraud simply because they have a profit motive? When I was a kid, game carts were like $70. They were larger products, were more expensive to manufacture, and sold to a much smaller market. And if I adjusted for real inflation, they would have most likely been around $200. Games now hardly come with a manual, can be manufactured for much less, and are much smaller so they can ship in larger quantities in the same sized container.

A small handful of people can make quality games like Ska Studios, Treasure, and Supergiant games. Middleware and other game creation tools are plentiful, many of which are free to experiment with (I'm not saying they're free to use commercially, but they can be used to bring costs in line and there should be few surprises from something that lets you test it out for free). In a day and age where the US market alone is making several billion dollars annually and the gaming hobby is mainstream, why stick paying customers with intentionally broken products? If you make 20 million dollars on your game and haven't made any money you need to re-evaluate your internal procedures. It's the US debt ceiling debate on a smaller and much more practical scale. No matter how much money you bring in, if you spend more money than that you are in trouble. Don't tax the people who are supporting you because you F@#$ed up. I am forced to pay excessive taxes. I can choose to support intelligent game designers.

@hami83 Well, because of this pass I'm not buying it until it's the cost of a rental, if I get around to it. Because that is precisely what they made it into. I have plenty of games that I can play from 20 years ago that are fun and I can access all of the content I paid for. I understand servers shutting down to an extent, but I like being able to travel with my purchase and playing it how I wish. It would be the same as buying lunch and taking it home only to realize the French fries aren't available when you leave the store. The only way to eat them would be in the confines of the restaurant even though you paid for them.

Sorry Sony. I am a late-comer to your party. I have plenty of unsealed games I haven't gotten around to on the 360, let alone the exclusives I bought for PS3 and the excellent ICO I repurchased with the collection. I'm sure Uncharted 3 is a good game, but it's one I can afford not buying, especially since I have a number of other games to keep my hands full with.

Why Epic Games hasn't made Shadow Complex 2 (but 'never say never')

For the people who aren't reading between the lines, they basically noticed that they had an opportunity to push the unreal engine onto the iOS and be able to sell their middleware to other developers, with Infintiy Blade being a demonstration of some of the possibilities the engine has to offer.

In that line of thought, they could make one game that could sell well and make SOME money or make another game that could lead to LOADS of money.

XBLIG creators express disappointment with low sales

Jul 6th 2011 8:31PM (Joystiq)
I only know about sequence from being on Eurogamer.net and seeing a review on it. I think that part of the problem is XBLIG is a platform for developers, but MS is not responsible for advertising for their games. They developers need to come up with an effective way to evangelize their games to get them noticed. They get most of the proceeds and that's how it works in the rest of the world. If I am a small time baker and I get my cake in a restaurant, the eating establishment is more than likely not going to make my cake stand out on the menu and have banners outside. I would need to contact newspapers, magazines, friends and family members to let them know and get them to try the game. Getting the game out of the door is only part of the battle, and I don't believe Microsoft should be held accountable for giving developers and avenue for success.

@Tereso I do the same thing, but you have to separate the concepts of what GeoHot is doing. I buy my games, as I own my system. I would like to be able to use the hardware as I choose. What these guys are doing helps people to use the hardware as they choose.

Right now, I have an xbox that doesn't always recognize the disc in the drive. It had problems less than a year after I bought it, but I didn't want to send it away. I also don't like it booting to the spotlight channel as opposed to my xbox. In order to play a game, I have to keep rebooting the system or eject the disc multiple times until it is recognized. Even if it is a retail disc I have loaded on the hard drive. If I could customize my system or load up the latest Xbox media center software, it would be really cool and save me a lot of hassle trying to just play my games. I would thank this guy.

Not buying good games and distributing software is another matter. Being able to customize my machine doesn't make me cheat at every game I own or keep me from buying games.

12 Days of Joyswag: Splatterhouse, Terror Mask statue, and weird collapsible speakers

I actually have Willy Beamish for the Sega CD and the load times are atrocious.

My pick would be Re:Volt. That or RC Pro AM. Many hours wasted playing those games.
