StarCraft 2 getting 3D support post-launch

Jul 4th 2010 4:36AM (Joystiq)
@Ninjasoup

That's because it has a deferred renderer. At least it does in the single player stuff anyway, I think they have quite a different one in game, probably still deferred though. But anyway, deferred rendering is incompatible with MSAA, so if you DO force it on, you'll most likely just be super sampling which will be extreeeemely slow.

UK govt cancels plans for video game tax relief

And frankly it wouldn't even cost them a lot to do in the face of what else they're doing. They're going to rue this decision. And I particularly dislike George Osbourne's view that this was "poorly targetted". It's just because it's games.

Iwata: 3DS likely won't sell below production cost

But it's not really a case of taking a chance is it? Come on, we all know Nintendo will make an enormous profit on software because the main reason people but Nintendo systems is because of Nintendo games. I agree that it's up to them what to charge, I said that, I'm just saying I think it would be *nice* of them to charge a bit more reasonably based on their profits. I know I'll get downvoted into oblivion for this anyway but whatever, that's my view. I know they're not a charity, but I think it's sad that in this world there's so few *nice* companies. *sigh*

Iwata: 3DS likely won't sell below production cost

I'm not sure a handheld priced at the same amount as the Wii would prove the same. Anyway, regardless of whether they proved it doesn't stop me feeling that it's cheeky of them.

Iwata: 3DS likely won't sell below production cost

I think this is yet another case of greed on Nintendo's part. Fair enough, it's their product, it's totally up to them what they sell it for, but bearing in mind the shovel loads of money they'll make on software, it seems not only greedy of them, but bad business wise. Surely it'd be better to get it in more peoples hands and recoup extra money on software than to put it out of the price range of many people?

Nintendo 3DS uses DMP's PICA200 GPU

@Levi Remember these are theoretical numbers. A quick calculation of that 800 million pixels value would put let a 3d game at 60fps draw every pixel 140 times. That might be possible of your game consists of a clear screen and nothing else, but when you bring in any calculation at all, that'll plummet. So will the 15 million vertices per second. They're just figures to make you go "ooooh" "woooow". Anyway, impressive stuff. I noticed myself that the Lylat Wars screenshots had antialiasing, really nice to see.

It's worth noting as well that this demo is very very small. A little piece of geometry with a skybox. You'd be lucky to get anything near that quality in a real game, but it shows the techniques are doable at least.

Underage PlayStation site hacker sentenced

Not sure I agree about it being correct so that they'd tighten up security, but I totally agree with you otherwise. Everyone makes stupid mistakes now and again, where is the logic in destroying a 17 year olds life because of a stupid thing they did that, as you said, didn't really do all that much damage and certainly didn't hurt anyone? If he does it again, fine, he deserves what he gets but doing a crime like this doesn't deserve a life destroying sentence the first time around. I'm sure this will be a good deterrent.

Man 'beats' Bejeweled 2 after playing for 3 years

Impressions: Crysis 2

Apr 9th 2010 4:26PM (Joystiq)
Optimizing on a fixed platform like the PS3/360 is infinitely easier. Not to mention the fact that tools for optimizing on the 360/PS3 are vastly better than the PC. Ask anyone who's used PIX for the Xbox and Pix for windows....

Anyway, Crysis was not badly optimized. Do you think that you can magically optimize a game like Crysis to make it run fast? It was "slow" because it was doing so much. If you don't think they spent months optimizing it you're just wrong.
