The art of High Delivery

Feb 18th 2007 12:09PM (Joystiq)
I found the game (unintentionally) tacky with all the aesthetic value of those collectible porcelain angels, an Anne Geddy's photo, or Ziggy cartoon. The criticism piece was far more interesting than the game in that it represented quite accurately the pseudo-academic floundering of a person with a narrow-minded scope of gaming, art and color palletes.

Batman? WB? This means we're *that* much closer to a BANANA SPLITS game!!! I'm hoping for a Mario Kart-esq romp around the park in Banana Buggies.

Lost rarities -- the hard to find gems of console gaming

Oct 9th 2006 5:44PM (Joystiq)
I have been vigorously collecting NES games for 6 years now. I have shifted my obsessive focus from punk rock records to NES games and back several times, but I have never met another NES collector in person. I believe I have an absolute corner on the market in my populous state. Also, we have certain chain of used merchandise stores which carry NES titles in massive quantities and at dirt cheap prices, which has allowed me to support myself via eBay for some time. Out of all of these games on this list, I have found the Caltron 6 in 1 for NES once ($5), and a runner up (Color a Dinosaur ($3-$5)--my girlfriend's personal party favorite) three times. The rarest game I have found is "The Buddha" (found on the Mexican border) a North American prototype of Demon Sword with a different menu system and half Japanese text. It is the only copy I know of. Also fun to find rarities I have only seen once are Bubble Bobble Part 2, Bee 52 (silver bootleg cart, Codemasters), Rescue Rangers 2, Contra Force, Bomberman 2, Bonk (wtf???), and Short Order/Eggsplode. I collect on three terms: rarity, quality and comedy. With NES, the latter qualification results in the best elements of my collection (see: Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom, Chubby Cherub). Tengen carts are not rare except for Tetris, and I've found that twice. In general: if you've heard of it, its not rare. After that, don't consult the internet, its a disaster, price guide-wise. EBay is the key.

Has Red Steel moved to freestyle swordfighting?

Here's some cutting edge game theory from an expert:

1)Even if you can swing a sword freely, have you really had the proper fencing lessons to beat an NPC that isn't a total nincompoop? The enemies would have to be slow or crippled or really fat not to beat some guy playing swords with a Wiimote. And I don't care what Jedi sites you peruse daily, you couldn't beat Jar Jar without some real skills on the saber, and those only result from some little force-producing, slavegirl-inseminating creatures. Or something. You gotta have some advantage in life-like sword fights in games, like super speed, or a helpful, albeit impatient, fairy.
2) The whole no-blood thing is absolutely retarded. Now, I don't want to hack up anyone with a sword or watch it in a game, so I understand. But if Ubisoft doesn't want that either, then they shouldn't have swordfights. It looks like the NPC is made of high endurance polymer. And if he IS, then all the untrained swordswinging you could ever gleam out of the Wiimote 1:1 controls wouldn't be that fun. I opt for a pinata, when you wack them, they yield prizes.

The 5 most difficult NES games

They should add a qualifier like "The Hardest Games (You May Have Actually Wanted to Try at some Point) for NES." Also, if 'Wall Street Kid' was such a cakewalk, why are these fools not rating Yachts instead of video games now???

These people have obviously never played Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom. Or Chubby Cherub. And furthermore, they never should.

80s instructional LP for conquering games

May 30th 2006 5:55PM (Joystiq)
whoa BopBop, are you me? I have both those books too, and next to one another on my shelf! Creepy... I have been collecting video game related records for years and some of my favorites are the Pac Man Album picture disc (featuring the Pac Man Rap which is beyond incredible, the afore mentioned B&G LP (cassette and 8-track available too) 'Pac Man Fever', along with the many nice picture sleeve 7"s that followed its release ('Do the Donkey Kong' is the best!), the Defender "soundtrack" LP, and oh so many more... the confluence of records and videogames should be honored for its supreme shallowness and appreciated by all for its profoundly negative contribution to the world of audio entertainment.

AH HAH! WELL THIS PROVES THAT ALL-CAPS IS MORE THAN A STYLISTIC DECISION IN COMICS.

In that VG Kats comic what the hizzy is the "Time Square Left," ??? Is that a typo, I mean seriously, google it! Is that supposed to be "TimeS Square" the Nintendo hardware codename? Where does the "left" come from. I am so confused. The winning comic is great. AND WHAT THE HELL WAS WRONG WITH NAVI??? She was adorable.
