Ziff Davis: EGM, 1UP publisher files for bankruptcy protection

Mar 5th 2008 7:52PM (Joystiq)
From a (web) developer standpoint, 1UP is a piece of crap. It's sluggish, very heavy yet manages to deliver astoundingly little information. Not to mention services under the "1UP umbrella" suffer from bandwidth and/or peering problems; I realize Ziff Davis is on the verge of bankruptcy and doesn't have a lot of cash at hand, but gee; if they're really about converting their business to something that'll be around in the next five years (paper press will die, soon enough) I'd figure they'd be interested in making the quality of their new outlets decent.

Take-Two rejects EA acquisition proposal [update 1]

Feb 24th 2008 6:44PM (Joystiq)
This is no sign of anything. Unless another company steps fourth with an acquisition offer Take Two's board agrees to, EA will just bypass them by going to the largest shareholders (i.e. a hostile takeover).

This is far from over.

Mass Effect to drop for the PC in May, EA to publish

deaftly: If you're "hunched" over your desk, the way you've set up your desk/home office is to blame, not your PC.

As for your other 'argument'; I'm a sysadmin, I sit in front of a Linux box eight hours a day staring at terminal emulator windows. Doesn't stop me from enjoying a good game in front of my PC when I get off work.

New games this week: Lost Odyssey edition

"Mod parent up". As I've said before, if the only way of integrating your storyline into a game you can come up with is to put a fucking text box with exposition on screen, you should be writing a novel - not designing a game.

Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 gameplay video looks familiar

Holy hell, this is as far from Rogue Spear (or even Raven Shield) as MGS is from Gears of War. Sad...

Rainbow Six Vegas 2 cashes in March 21

R6: Rogue Spear is on my top 25 greatest games of all time; such a fantastic tactical shooter which really required you to think and plan your approach unlike most mindless by-the-numbers FPSes at the time. Raven Shield was sort of a letdown; a dumbed down interface with less tactics and more FPS gameplay (but it was still okay, I guess).

In my mind, Vegas is a Rainbow Six game in name only. It's like they figured "okay, what if we take SWAT 4 and dumb it down to the point where it'll work with gamepads and appeal to the casual console gaming FPS audience?". I guess it worked, considering how well it sold.

PC game sales only 14 % of industry in 2007

Crysis sold fine in Europe. Gaming on computers has in general never been big in America, even as far back as the Amiga which had a sizable following in Europe but was fairly unestablished in the US.

PC game sales only 14 % of industry in 2007

I gave up console gaming a long time ago. It's just so nice to have my PC hooked up to two 24" widescreen LCDs that display higher resolutions than any HDTV could output. I sit comfortably in a 700 USD office chair, which doesn't give me back pains unlike a couch. I get the best input interface there is for games that hope to achieve depth beyond the "urr durr button mashing" pragma.

There. Another perspective on the matter, equally flawed. Move along, nothing to see here.

Totilo: Lost Odyssey is a slow-paced, well-written game

Complex storylines in games are fine, but if the only way of integrating one you can come up with is putting a fucking text box on screen, you should be writing a novel - not designing a game.
