Prisoner gets 40 more years for cellphone possession

May 1st 2006 11:21PM (Engadget Mobile)
About time they make cellphones illegal. Well, this law apparently only applies to jail, but its certainly a start.

Wii conspiracy theories. (They're really, really sad.)

Apr 29th 2006 1:41AM (Joystiq)
There's a difference between the various Clinton scandals and the Wii. A big one. Wii is fairly whimisical and odd, although apparently some people make a connotation to piss or genitals; I haven't thought about it that way since I was 4. We aren't saying "OMG Miyamoto killed a man!"
"There's no such thing as bad publicity" is true in some cases, but definatly not all. Bill O'Reily definatly didn't get any more viewers when he was talking about feeling up that woman with a falafel; but I'll admit watching things I wouldn't normally watch when there's some controversy. Like a damned media whore, I know, but its true.
So, yeah, Nintendo is getting alot of attention for this. Its an unexpected move in a previously hard-core, (homophobic?) male-centric market, and Nintendo wants to turn some heads, which they've obviously done.

Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection via Dial-up

Feb 20th 2006 6:11PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
I'm on dial-up and I've been playing MKDS since it came out (You might recognize my "I heart 56k" icon). By my estimates, MKDS probably takes about 3KB/s; I regularly transfer at 5KB/s, this is well within 56k tolerances. I can attest to you that 80% of the time, there is no noticable lag.
When I do lag, the game remains entirely playable; with no drop in frame rate and only the opponent's karts are "stuttering". Barring weapons, the laggy race is entirely the same.
Furthermore, the vast majority of weapons are lag-agnostic. Red shells, blue shells, bombs, bullet bills, and bananas. When green shells come into play, I have to compensate for lag, but it seems to come rather easily. Yes, I realize my opponents have to take such measures against me, too, but they get the same lag-agnostic weapons that I do; and they probably know when I'm lagging anyway, so they should be using lag-compensated aiming against me. Its only one weapon, anyway.

Using 56k doesn't make my game any less pleasurable, it doesn't make your game any less pleasurable, and it certainly doesn't give me an advantage. So who would you rather race?
I swear, bigotry against 56k gets worse and worse every year...

Surface: Episode 13

Jan 23rd 2006 10:39PM (AOL TV)
I'm confused, you guys say "season finale", but NBC is saying "Gripping Finale!" and "All secrets will be revealed!" Is this really a miniseries, or is it some kind of strange PR on NBC's part?
On one hand, I don't see how they can wrap the story up nicely in two hours, especially with all three characters not having met up. On the other, its a pretty high-budget show, and the way they refer to episodes by number as opposed to some sort of title always suggested "miniseries" to me. Does Surface even have the ratings to go on?
Meh. Time to stop thinking and start enjoying the ride, I guess.

Do you watch these shows?

Nov 2nd 2005 2:51AM (AOL TV)
Nancy Grace is on Headline News; how you have an actual *show* on Headline News, I don't know.. Kind of like Greta Van Susteran, but minus the plastic surgery and the Scientology. She does have a rather Dan Ratherish southern charm about her, though, if that's worth anything. Yes Dear is mostly a terrible show, aside from sparse Tim Conway episode. I find that its often slighty better than The King Of Queens, the other terrible archetypical dysfunctional family sitcom on CBS; there's a certain surrealism in many of the episodes, I think. Not surprised at all its from the same guy as Earl.
